I Want to Dye My Hair... Is It Safe for Breastfeeding?

I am breastfeeding my 10 month old still. I would like to color my hair?? Anyone know if this is contraindicated?

I was looking at permanent dyes. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I heard it isn't. If you must i would use the rinse out kind (non permanent) and do it outside with a hose.

Yes it is OKAY to dye or even bleach your hair while nursing or while preggers. I have done both with the okay from both doctors. The only thing I think may be a lil iffy would be using henna hair dye. You also can ask your hairdresser but trust me you and baby will be fine!! Good luck!

It is a total myth that woman who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid perms or hair color. I had the concern also as I heard my whole life that it shouldn't be done. My hairdresser assured me that it's fine -- so color on and feel like a fabulous mama!!

I used a semi-permanent color when I was beast feeding because I thought it might be 'safer'

I dyed my hair through both of my pregnancies and breastfeeding and my children are perfectly normal, healthy and smart. I used store bought hair color, so if anything was going to affect my children, that surely would have. If you're really concerned, you may want to check with your hairdresser and maybe they have more natural coloring products. Good luck.

I did it and my daughter is fine at age three now. I used the milder brand that uses natural coloring - I believe Revlon puts it out...it's cheaper too but range of colors is limiting. Ask your obgyn and or his nurse also.

Hi S.
My aunt owns her own salon and I asked her the same question when I was breast feeding my son... She said that it was safe to dye my hair. The only risk really comes if you were to have many repeated exposures-Once and done is fine. I did it and my son is very much ok.

Enjoy.

I have heard that it actually is uncertain if it will actually affect the baby both in pregnancy and nursing. I think they put those warnings on to cover their own butts. The other day I was looking at a picture from shortly after I had my oldest. Its funny because its not the best picture of me but I absolutely love my hair in it. It looked so light. Then I remembered I had gotten highlights in it a short time before. I did breast feed at the time and my daughter has been perfectly fine and unaffected by it. And if you're little one is 10 mos old already chances are she is getting food other wise some too now so you are probably perfectly alright to go ahead and do it. Have fun feeling beautiful!
