I Think My Son Is Lactose Intolerant

My son is almost 14 months, and has been sick vomitting since we switched him from formula to whole milk. We tried different kinds of milk, but he was still sick. So, I put him on Soy milk and he seems to be fine now. Lactose Intolerance does run in the family. What do you think?

What can I do next?

It sounds like lactose intolerance to me. I would just research to make sure soy is the route you want to go with your son. There are plenty of other options, such as rice milk, that do not have the same possible side effects (hormonal) as soy. I think it's a good idea to keep him off milk, at least until you can talk to the doctor, since it seems to have made him better.

I just did the same thing with my daughter. She developed a small rash when I gave her milk. She drinks Lactaid (lactose free milk) or soymilk. She does eat yogurt, cheese, and ice cream. The doctor said that it may be that her body does not tolerate it now, but to try again in 3 months.

My younger daughter is Lactose inotlerant. She was never hip on her cow milk based formula, then would continously vomit and cry in pain when she had milk. Lactaid did the same thing. We know have her on soy and she is doing great. We cook with it instead of milk. Double check with your Dr. first.

Could be. I am lactose intolerant. Soy naturally contains estogen in it. I have read that if you are pregnant or even nursing a boy that you should avoid soy. There is milk out there that has been processed in a way that it takes out the lactic acid. Lactaid is what I drank while I was pregnant. There are several companys that make it. It also still has the fat and Vitamin D babies need. I would talk to your doctor about the type of milk he thinks would be best. Other symtoms that you can watch for that accompany lactose intolorance are stomach cramps, bloating, flatulence and diarrhea.

I had the same thing happen to my son when we switched from Breast Feeding to Milk. We went to an Allergist and it turned out he has a milk allergy (vs. Lactose intolerant). For this reason it is definitely a good idea to see your Dr. and set up an appointment with an allergist. No one else in my family has food allergies, but the number of kids with allergies in the US is sky rocketing.

We had a lot of problems when we switched our daughter to milk-based formulas and then to whole milk. Mostly rashes and digestive problems. Lots of diarrhea and bleeding rashes in her diaper area. It turned out to be just a sensitivity to a protein in the cow's milk that she couldn't digest.

We consulted with the pediatrician and he suggested soy milk. We kept her on soy milk for nearly a year and then gradually started trying her on cow's milk again. She grew out of it and now loves to drink milk.

Ask your pediatrician and be make sure that they listen to you. Describe what happens, the gas, any bloating that you notice, and anything that you think is important. It will help them make a more accurate diagnosis. If it helps you to write down everything and then bring in the list, then do it. I find I tend to forget stuff when I go to talk to a doctor.

That may be it. Run it all by your Dr first however. I personally don't think soy is good for growing kids, but ask your Dr. I am not sure if it is genetic or not either, something again to ask your Dr about. I don't think vommitting is a sign of lactose intolerance though, it has more to do with gassy feelings, bloating and cramping. I never heard of the vommitting.
