I Think My 2 yr.old Is Lactose-intolerant? Seeking Advice

My 2 yr. old has always spit up since he was a baby. But lately, I've noticed he will spit up alot after having a cup of milk. I'm thinking he may be lactose-intolerant. He doesn't get a rash or any allergy symptoms though. Is milk allergy separate from lactose-intolerant? I need advice from other moms who have had this problem. Also, what do you give your child for a milk substitute? Any insights would be great. Thank you moms!

What can I do next?

B.,

My son is two as well, and his lactose intolerance does not present itself as spitting up, but severe stomach upset, cramping and loose stool. He was diagnosed when he was still in the NICU after birth (8 weeks early), and other than breastmilk, his Doctor recommended Soy Milk or other Milk substitutes. We tried, Almond but possible nut issues have steered us back to Soy.

There is a huge difference between being allergic to dairy and lactose intolerance. It's not fun, but I've seen the rash and the pain some kids experience with severe allergies.

From my family experience, it almost sounds like acid reflux. My cousin's little boy has had reflux since he was born, and is now on a special diet so they can void meds if at all possible.

I would make an appt. with your son's Doctor. Keep a journal of when it happens, and how long the episodes last and take that with you.

Good luck!

It sounds more like a milk protein allergy....very different from lactose intolerant.

My twins both used to vomit 2-3x per week & I did research & related it to a possible milk protein allergy. My DR thought it was nothing & kind of blew me off. I pressed for an allergy test (they can do a blood test...it is called an Immuno-cap) & sure enought they were both allergic to milk proteins and actually eggs too. My one son had eczema but my other son had no external symptoms....only the vomiting.

Your options are pretty much soy milk & rice milk if he is allergic to dairy. Lactaid doesn't have lactose BUT IT DOES HAVE MILK PROTEIN---which is what they are allergic to if they actually are allergic to milk.

Get him tested. It will eliminate the uncertainty and hopefully get you on a path to cure the spitting up/vomiting.

Hi B....here you go, advice from every end of the spectrum. My PED told me most latins are lactose intolerant, may or may not be your case. Further, my husband loves to drink milk and swore he was not lactose intolerant. He would from time to time throw up after drinking a glass of milk. He always attributed the vomiting to something else. Well, I finally (after years of this) bought some lactose free milk and told him that was his milk. He is almost finished with the jug and no problems what so ever. I think you will just have to experiment on days you know you will be home and are able to watch your child for reactions. If it works, try a little more. Sometimes doctors don't even know what triggers our reactions.

Best of luck.
