If he is too far behind, you can also request that the school evaluate him for a learing disablity in writen expression. Do this in writing. Educating your son is the schools responsiblity, unless you are wanting to get him instruction that will take him beyond grade level, if he is not making prgress in this area, there could be a reason why. Give examples of his writing that give you concern. The school may say that they need to try inclass interventions first, so let them, and ask that what they will do will be documented, and how long they have to make a difference, and how they will show that he made progress before they evaluate. You can aslo get your own educational evaluation in that area from a pschologist who dose educational testing or neurophsycholgist. The thing is, you really want to know what is causeing his problem, so that you use the best targeted intervention for him, even if you are paying for it your self.

If, for instance he has a visual motor issue or a visual perceputal issue, he may respond to some intervention combined with occupational therapy. If, he has a word retreival issue, he may need some langague therapy combined with writing strategies. There are many different things that could effect witten expression.

Your school districts special education department, and the counselor at your sons school should have a list of tutors in your area.

call a local college you might be able to get a college student majoring in education for a less then if you hired a teacher (here you cannot hire a teacher that works in your district) or a tutor center.

The suggestions below are all very good.
But I'm wondering what happened in first and second grades.
Did the teachers not notice that your son was having difficulties?
Has his eyesight been checked?
Also, before he can write sentences,
can he write (print) WORDS?
Does he know how to write his name?

Check with your school guidance counselor. MANY teachers tutor on the side for extra $ around here. You can get a great tutor!

I don't know about your area but a one on one academic tutor session runs about $50/hour here.

It is great you are looking into assistance for him! I would start with the school counselor to see if perhaps there is a small group session he attend, which may save some money. I did one in college and it was a matter of you doing your own work and a tutor walking around a table assisting the students. Otherwise, an older neighbor kid, the high school, or college.

Or, you can go online or to the bookstore (Borders) and pick up work books for 3rd grade. I looked through them all and the best ones I found were, Sylvan, Hooked on Phonics, and Kumon. Gakken looked pretty good, but the others were my first choice. My daughters preschool just picked up a curriculum through the United Way and the work book is very simple and black and white. I liked the others for their bright colors and puzzles and games. My daughter also seems to have a bigger interest in the ones I purchased which were Kumon and Sylvan. She actually likes the Kumon book best. If you read the front cover it will give you tips on how to use the books. One is to stop them while they are still interested and it works!!

You could call the local education department of your college and get a college kid to tutor for $8-12 per hour. There are also churches in some areas that provide tutoring free. Is there a family or moms magazine published? Sometimes they list resources or you can email the editor who might know.

Check with your son's teacher and school counselor. Either professionally or personally, teachers will usually recommend friends and former collueges... which is how we found my daughter's tutor.

If he is having trouble in school learning a subject sometimes looking at things differently can help. I would contact your local college that offers teaching as a degree. They will jump at the chance to be able to help out and get some experience. They can meet at the college library. Stay close by though.
