I Need a Home Remedy for HAY HAIR Lol

My hair is naturally curly, long and VERY dry this winter! I feels like hay, no joke. Oh, and I'm almost 100% gray so I color it about every 4 weeks.

I don't really want to buy a product but was wondering if there is something you do at home that I can mix up to make my hair softer and healthier.

Thanks everyone!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just realized my profile pic on here is a good one of my wild crazy hair. =) Looks like coconut oil is popular. Thanks ladies for the responses so far!

My Granny had thick, wiry, Italian hair. She used to warm a little olive oil, comb it through her hair and tie a plastic baggie over it. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes then wash out with a good shampoo and conditioner. Her hair was soft and lovely.

I found out the hard way that coloring my hair every 4 weeks was totally frying it.
It broke off easily, was brittle no matter what oil or conditioners or hair masks I used on it and I had split ends everywhere.
My hair is mostly brown with some grey but I've always liked red.
So about 8 years ago I decided to give henna a try.
I use body are quality henna (makes a very smooth paste that's easier to wash out and gives a wonderful color).
It IS time consuming.
I mix up my mix and let it sit on my head 4 or more hours - and I do this about once every 8 weeks.
But I get a wonderful auburn and the grey becomes coppery highlights.
And I mix it with vinegar or lemon juice.
No toxic chemicals, no ammonia smells - if you don't like the henna smell (some say it smells a bit like grass or hay), you can add a little spice (I like ground cloves) or a drop of lavender oil to your mix.
My hair is now silky, smooth, shiny, and as strong as it can get.
I can grow it a lot longer than I use to be able to.
I don't have a single split hair on my head.
I know - it's not for everyone.
Some people just don't care for it.
But henna has been very good for my hair, so I'll never go back to using any commercial dyes.
Since henna coats your hair shaft, the color you get will be unique because the color you start with shines through a little.
If you are totally grey, you will get a bright red using pure henna.
If that doesn't appeal to you, you can achieve other colors by combining henna with a percentage of indigo and/or alma.
You can get brown or even a very dark black.
If you want some golden color you can mix cassia with henna.

Sounds like you took my hair! The only difference is that I quit dying mine a few years back and decided to (ugh) embrace the gray, and since then, it's not nearly as dry.

I do wash my hair everyday, which I know is a no-no for curly hair, but if I don't, it looks awful. I use a little shampoo and a LOT of condition each day, I use mousse, and I NEVER blow dry my hair. That seems to help.

I made whipped coconut oil for this purpose (coconut oil is a solid at room temperature, but melts at 76*). The way you make whipped is to put it in your Kitchenaid mixer (or use a hand mixer) at high speed for 7 minutes. Then you can store it in a glass jar. The consistency is easier to work with than regular solid coconut oil. (It's great for hair as a leave-in conditioner, but also wonderful on your skin.)

The other thing I would suggest is Carol's Daughter Monoi Oil shampoo and conditioner. You can buy it at Sephora and Ulta (probably other places too). It smells divine and leaves your hair very soft and shiny. Aveda makes a shampoo and conditioner called Dry Remedy that's fabulous as well.

I have the same kind of hair as you...and mine is very dry this winter too. :( My hairdresser said she heard olive oil is the new thing in hair products. She said to warm some up and put it in my hair. Wrap my hair in a towel for a couple hours. Then rinse it out with hot water. She said don't use shampoo. The next morning then shampoo your hair like usual. I have not tried it yet but I was going to soon.

I deep condition with coconut oil -- smear it on wet hair paying special attention to the ends, then wrap my head up in an old t-shirt and wear it around for a few hours. Shampoo out. You can find coconut oil in the grocery store where you find the shortening/oil.

My hair also has a naturally course texture, and I've found that straightening it gives it a sleek and smooth look. I know it's a hassle, esp for us who have wavy or curly hair, but if you decide to do it, some tips: use a heat protecing spray, break your hair into sections to make it easier, and let it air dry or if you do blow dry brush it as you go so it doesn't get even more frizzy and hard to handle.

Plus, you are probably not washing everyday so on the non-wash day you only need to touchup with the flat iron.

Good luck :)

High fat content foods, i.e. avocado, nut butters, and veg oils would work. Just be careful if you rinse out in the shower, because these can make the floor very slick.

Good luck to you and yours, F. B.

1. Treat with coconut oil. I love HoH's method of whipping it...I'll have to try that!

2. Get a water softener. Softened water makes a WORLD of difference for your hair and skin, especially in the Winter! I haven't had to do a conditioning treatment since we got a softener.

Ha ha ha! I called my hair straw the other day. I feel your pain. Mine gets dry too from the winter. I don't have to color mine as much but what I did do was an at home keratin treatment. It straightened my hair and I don't have to wash it as much. Also, I put a bit of coconut oil thru my hair and it weighs it down a bit and moisturizes it. I'm sure you've tried all sorts of leave in conditioners like me, but if not, you might check those out. Good luck and I can't wait to read your responses!

Mayonnaise.

Glop it on and cover with a plastic bag.

Wear an icky t-shirt and a towel around your shoulders.

Leave it on for an hour or so and rinse out in the shower.

I know you said you are looking for a home remedy, but the coconut oil suggestion reminded me of what we use on my daughter's hair...It's called "Softee hair conditioner" made with coconut oil. It comes in a jar with a blue lid from Walgreens, and at only a dollar a jar you can't go wrong! It is a leave-in conditioner that you just work in after your shower, leaving hair soft and smooth, and it smells wonderful!
