My baby is four months and I'm still breast feeding. I came down with the flu and I have this horrible cough! What medication can I take? Thanks everyone!

What can I do next?

See a doctor and make sure it's not whooping cough.
That would be very dangerous around so young a baby (and too young to be vaccinated).
Over the counter medication might help ease the symptoms but it's not going to make you any less contagious.
Assuming it's not flu or anything else but a plain cold virus, some coughs just go on for a long time.
My personal record was 8 weeks (doctor verified it wasn't pneumonia, bronchitis, allergies or anything else) and my ribs were getting sore.
Try a heating pad on your chest and breathe in steam when ever you can.
Use a neti pot (rinse out your sinuses with salt water as often as you want).
Do not try to dry it up - that only makes it worse.
Stick with Mucinex to keep the mucus thin and easy to cough up.
Drink plenty of fluids (water, tea, chicken soup).
Keep the humidifier running in your room at night.
It will eventually quit sooner or later.

I was allowed to take Benedryl to dry me up during pregnancy. I have think nursing/pregnancy are one in the same in that category?

See about taking homeopathic oscillococcinum, ask a naturopath!

I got the flu while pregnant and then with another baby while breastfeeding. I took Oscillococcinum both times. I also got adjusted by our chiropractor (which totally helps the joint pain an stimulates the immune system), drank 4 liters of smart water a day to keep me electrolytes up naturally, no sugar, no dairy and stayed in bed (plenty of rest).

The first time while pregnant, the flu lasted 3 days from the first symptom to perfect. The time I was breastfeeding (2 months ago), it lasted 30 hours. I also gave some of the pellets to my baby.

Did you go to the doctor? If you did, he or she should tell you what to take. Did you have a nasal swab done? That should actually tell you if you have the flu. If you get to the doctor quickly enough, and if you test positive for flu, they can give you Tamiflu which will lessen your time and make you less sick. (IF they can give this while you are nursing - only the doc knows this.)

If you just have an upper respiratory infection, and not the flu, that is different, but you still need to go to the doctor. If I were you, I'd wear a mask over your face so that you won't breathe on the baby.

Please go see the doctor. If you have bronchitis, you would need antibiotics.

go to the dr....& get a script for Tamiflu if you test positive. Much better than guessing what to take!
