Hello moms. I really could use your advice. I am 6 weeks pregnant with our second child and I am just miserable. I have nausea AND indigestion (if that's possible), I can hardly keep any food down, no food sounds good to me anyway (I have to force myself to eat), and I don't know what else I can do. It all started on Sunday night when I vomited all night long and then again during the day on Monday. This surprised me because the last time I vomited was 10 years ago. I never had any nausea or sickness when I was pregnant with my son. Yesterday and today I have horrible stomach pains, gas and some diarrhea (sorry if it's too much info.). My son and husband also had diarrhea in the last 2 days. I also got up at about 2 a.m. this morning and almost threw up, but was able to stop myself. I called my doctor's office, hoping she would tell me I had the flu or something, but she said that this was all just typical first trimester sickness and that it would probably last until the end of the first trimester. That is not what I wanted to hear. Why did I all of sudden get sick at 6 weeks instead of before? Do any of you think it really could be just the flu? Does anyone have any advice on how I can get my stomach ailments under control? Tums don't work and my doctor's office does not recommend Pepto Bismal (which I think would really help me). I have tried Ginger Ale, 7 up and saltine crackers, which seem to help very little. Any advice or sympathies you have to offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks moms!

So What Happened?

Thank you moms all so much! You have given me some wonderful advice and encouragement. I slept propped up on pillows last night and am feeling 100% better today. I am actually even hungry today! I really do believe (like some of you said) that I had the flu on top of morning sickness. I am going to eat small meals every 1-2 hours today and get some peppermint and ginger candies to suck on. I am going to try the Preggie Pops too. Thank you all so much for caring about a complete stranger. If you have any more advice, please keep it coming. :)

Congratulations and best of luck! I had "morning" sickness from 6 weeks to about 17 or 18 weeks. The only thing that really helped me was sucking on peppermint. Brach's Hard mint candies, candycanes...anything I could find. I hope this helps.

What you're going through is perfectly normal. I was nauseous through 23 weeks with my first and it started at six weeks. I was nauseous from weeks 8 - 12 with my second. What helped me was wearing motion sickness wrist bands. It might sound strange but it helped me tremendously. I, also, found that green tea with ginger helped quite a bit, too.

As far as the vomiting goes, I had success with flat 7up (I would open a can at night and leave it on the nightstand for the next morning) and saltine crackers. I'm sorry you aren't have luck with that.

I had TERRIBLE indigestion with my last pregnancy. I took Tums (with my dr. approval). I also didn't eat anything past 6 pm and towards the end I was doomed to sleeping in the reclining chair.

I also had to stay away from acidic food - anything with tomato sauce!

There is no rhyme or reason why some people get sick and others don't or even why you're sick with 1 pregnancy, but not the other. Just keep thinking about the baby and don't have too many ambitions besides keeping the 2 year old occupied.

Hi J. -
I'm a mom of three and can tell you with my 2 yonger children felt nauseated and had some vomiting and going the other way. With my middle guy, I thought I had the flu as the people we were vacationing with had given me some virus he caught. I didn't know I was pregnant at the time and took lots of pepto and immodium (oops). Anyway, I caught the stomach flu from my kids when pregnant with my 3rd child. It can last a while depending on the bug; so maybe thats just it. Sometimes the sicker you are in the beginning means that you have a strong baby growing inside... Take heart and think positive that as your body adjusts to your new baby maybe you'll feel better. Good Luck!

Oh honey! I'm so sorry to hear about your woes, I know them all too well. What really helped me was peppermint. Peppermint tea and peppermint candies. Even sucking on a regular lollipop sometimes helped, even a popsicle. I hope this helps and you fell better. And it is normal to get this at 6 weeks, just remind youself that it's your body's way of telling you that your baby is healthy.

Hi J.,
I think you have the flu on top of morning sickness. I miscarried my first baby and never had an ounce of sickness, and with my next 2 I had morning sickness 24/7 all nine months and what got me thru it was the Dr telling me my body was producing everything it needed for the baby and that that was making me have the morning sickness! BUT I never had stomache cramps and diahrea. If your family had symptoms too, you've got something on top of it. Also, check to make sure you and your family aren't having any problems with the peanut butter items being recalled! Every day they are adding to the list of items. Be careful it's not a reaction to something.
Normal morning sickness is a queezy stomache feeling and after I'd get sick I'd feel fine and then same feelings would come back and repeat itself - sometimes 1-5 hours apart. What got me thru mine was thinking - This is a good sign and it's one less closer to the last one!!!!! Good luck and if you keep having the diahrea, get into your Dr - also getting up during the night never happened to me, that's why I feel you are having something else on top of morning sickness!!

I was very sick in my first trimester too. I started getting sick at 8 weeks- it just starts when the horomones get strong. After I threw up in the morning (I had to do it at least once) I would drink an ensure shake which helped a lot! If you find yourself so sick that you can't even keep water down then go to the doctor and they can give you pills that will make you not sick- but they are very expensive. The ensure helped me though, I felt a lot better when I drank it. Every pregnancy is different (I hope my next one is easy!) Just think that when the sickness is over everything else will seem easy- even the birth. Hang in there- I've been there. Rest as much as possible and get help with your other daughter.

Ginger helps your tummy and I know that they make Preggie Pops with ginger. Basil is also something that helped sooth my tummy when I felt like eating nothing. I know that it sucks to be sick but think about the wonderful gift that will come from it in the end.

I feel it is probably a stomach bug, but taking awhile to go through your system. I am looking into natural remedies for pregnant women to take for morning sickness as I am a natural childbirth educator. Let me know if you are interested and I can share some of those remedies with you. They are natural, safe, and effective.

You have some great advice. fyi, Pepto is not a good idea if you have flu too. You'll have to let it work out of your system, just be careful about dehydration. Morning sickness sucks. It's been a little bit worse with each of my kids. I started taking my vitamin at night (close to bed time) with a couple of peanut butter sandwiches and that has helped me some. Best wishes, I hope you feel better soon!

Congrats on your pregnancy! Nausea doesn't have a time-table of when to begin or end. It is different for everyone. I had it very severly for both my pregnancies. My first pregnancy the nausea didn't begin until 8 weeks and didn't end until about 14 weeks. My second pregnancy it began at six weeks and didn't end until around 16 weeks. But the last two weeks were much less severe. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it will end. Some things that helped me: graham crackers in the morning, lemon drops to suck on, lemon fragrances to neutralize any other odors that would bring on nausea and popsicles (they make some for pregnant women). I had to change my shampoo/conditioner and other strong smells. Sounds like you may have had a flu or food poisoning in addition to your nausea since your husband and son had similar symptoms. Nausea is considered a healthy pregnancy so hard as it is consider yourself lucky! Get your husband to help as much as he can!!!! There is a medication that your doctor can offer you called zofran. If you want to go that route. Some people are, understandably, not willing to put it in their body. Just remember if you need it, your doctor will not do anything to jeopardize the health of your baby. I hope this helps and it DOES GET BETTER :)

Good luck

Unfortunately, I had the same thing happen starting at wk 6 for both of my pregnancies. It's a condition called hyperemisis(sp?). it usually runs from wk 6-wk 12. It's basically hell. During wk 11 of my 2nd pregnancy my Dr finally gave me some meds for the nausea, which started to help, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. You might want to check out this condition on-line to get some more info & tips. Just make sure you keep the fluids coming bc I ended up in the hospital several times bc I could not keep anything down, not even water. I wish I could offer more advice, but nothing worked for me. Maybe if you can do some research and find the meds I was prescribed, you can ask your Dr abt it. Good luck!!!

This sounds totally normal. I began nausea with all three of my pregnancies at about 7 weeks, but my third actually made me vomit. (Ended up with 3 boys, so the nausea doesn't always predict the baby's sex) My doctor recommended me take one-half tablet of unisom (over the counter sleeping pill found at most drug stores.) I was very weary of doing so, but researched this with many doctor-friends. IT WORKED!!! I wasn't nauseaus the next morning and was able to stuff myself before lunchtime. I found that if my stomach got at all low/empty...then I would feel sick. The 2 times I forgot to take the pill at bedtime, I vomited the entire next day....so be religious about it. Good Luck...hope this works.

J.,

My morning sickness kicked in around 7 weeks and is still going strong (I am 14 weeks). I have lost 5 pounds so far with this pregnancy and with my first I gained 8 pounds by this point. Every pregnancy is different and unpredictable. It is surely possible that you have a bit of a stomach virus if your husband and child are sick, too - probably it is a combo of pregnancy and whatever is going around. With my first I was not sick at all and this totally shocked me when it started. I have already sworn that this will be my last!

Unfortunately, there is not too much out there that helps. Ginger or peppermint tea can be calming and sometimes chewing gum seems to help me. I would recommend taking one or two bites of something plain- like bread or banana - every 1/2 hour or so. Sometimes the stomach can handle tiny quantities more frequently rather than scheduled meals. Remaining upright at least 1 hour after eating should help with both the nausea and heartburn (my reaction to feeling sick is always to crawl into bed but this can make things sooooo much worse!).

If you are looking for a more direct approach, there is a medicine called Zofran that some doctors will prescribe for pregnancy related vomiting. It can be rather expensive and some insurance companies will give you a hard time about paying for it, but it really does seem to help (I am a nurse and have worked with pregnant patients who have seen relief with this). You and your doctor would have to decide if this would be the right approach for you as all medicines carry some risk during pregnancy.

Best of luck and congratulations! I know exactly how you feel...

I'm sorry you're feeling so bad. It's possible that the nausea and vomiting is just morning sickness, but I don't know about the diarrhea. Sometimes morning sickness doesn't start until around the 7th week because that's when the pregnancy hormones really start to kick in. I had a few days of really bad nausea (no vomiting) for about a week or two and then it went away. So hopefully yours will go away too and you won't have to deal with it the entire first trimester. I used acupressure wrist bands that I bought from Walgreen's. I also used Preggie Pops that i bought from Motherhood maternity. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi-

Well, I think, because your husband and son had diarreah too...Your sickness could very well be a virus, or something you all ate.

If it is morning sickeness, it could very well start at 6 weeks even if you had no morning sickness with your son. I was very sick during my first trimester with all three of my pregnancies. I had vomiting, nausea, migranes, and cramping. It started at about 6 weeks and lasted to about the 12th or 13th week. At that time it just switched off like a switch. My doctor recommended taking Ginger to settle my stomach. It did make me much more comfortable. Once my stomach was settled, I found that if I snacked all day long...always keeping something in my stomach...the migranes eased up too. Hope you find this helpful.

Take Care,
A.

If other people in your family are sick, you may have a touch of that as well as morning sickness.

Look at Walgreens in the baby medicine section for homeopathic baby remedies- Little Tummies or something of that sort can help. They also have motion sickness bands that you wear on your wrists- look near the Dramamine or ask the pharmacist.

For indigestion, a small piece of raw potato helps, eating almonds or drinking almond milk, staying away from acidic foods, not eating before bed, propping up while sleeping, and taking Papaya Enzymes.

Hope you feel better soon!

One thing that helped tremendously during my first pregnancy was peppermints. I also ordered some preggie pops online, but didn't feel that they helped all that much, but sucking on mints took my mind off it. Sorry that's all I can offer, but I wish you the best!!

When I was pregnant I had "morning" sickness from 4-6 weeks on. I couldn't take much more of that so my high risk doctor told me to take unisom and B6 vitamin. The combination of these works wonders. I was cured. I took half of a unisom with 25 mg of B6 in the morning and at night. Best of luck!

So sorry you feel yucky. It is common for ms to kick in around 6 weeks though. I would guess you also were unfortunate to get a stomach bug on top of it. Pepto is not recommended by your doctor because it is an aspirin product. I worked with someone who was very sick (turned out she was having twins) and the motion sickness bracelets really did help. Other than that, having something to eat before getting out of bed can help. I only had ms with my first but on the days I felt better I would drink a can of v-8. If I thought I was going to be throwing up I didn't. Now I wonder if the lack of it was what made me feel more nauseous. On a recent Lake Michigan fishing trip my dh got very sea sick on the choppy water. He was told that drinking a glass of tomato juice beforehand can help a lot. Something about the acid in the juice. Not sure if it works on the same principle, but I have been wondering and if you like that sort of thing, it can't probably hurt to try. Good luck!

I had something like that - non-stop vomitting - I even had a special spot in the backyard to go if a kid was in my bathroom. And the heartburn...dear God the heartburn. Every single thing I ate came back up and I LOST around twelve pounds. This went on throughout the entire pregnancy. Years and years later my sister the nurse said it was an actual medical condition and I should've been treated for it.

So if I were you I'd see my OBGYN and see if they can help.

I hope you feel better soon! I wish you a happy and healthy pregnancy.

I can relate and it's no fun at all. I tried to avoid my "trigger" areas in my house. I would be VERY careful that you do not dehydrate b/c of all the throwing up. I did have the flu at 20 weeks and puked my brains out so much that I needed two IV drips at the acute care. I also did take Reglan to help with the nausciousness but your OB had to prescribe. Unfortunately they don't sound too sympathetic...that stinks. I LOVE my OB/GYN! Good luck.

It sounds like if you and your husband and son are also experiencing flu-like systems it could very well be the flu or food poisoning. I would inquire to your doctor's or general doctor's office again. If you are still having a lot of trouble, communicate to your ob/gyn... you need to make sure you are not dehydrated and getting nutrients. Hope you feel better. As far as home remedies that haven't been mentioned, peppermint anything (mint, tea, etc). Hope you feel better.

You have a lot of good advise already. I would check with your local Pharmacy to see if they are seeing a local flu that resembles yours. They see everything in the neighborhood, whereas, depending on where your dr. is located, it may be in a slightly different proximity. With every child is different and you can have mild morning sickness with one and wretched sickness with another. However, I'm thinking that you may have a touch of the flu and you just don't want to get dehydrated so stay in touch with your dr. Also, with the stomach pains, I just want to throw in there - any possible concerns of any gall bladder problems? Just covering the bases.

Tums were my best friend with my second pregnancy - I had a lot of indigestion. Someone mentioned flat 7-up and a can of 7-up went with me wherever I went. I really hope you start feeling better very soon.
