Hello again ladies,
Ok, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (excuse my spelling) 3 years ago. I have been on synthroid at .25ml for 3 years I just recently went to a new doctor for it since I've moved home. She is a specialist in this area and I am waiting to get my lab results back. My question is do any of you have this and did you ever lose the weight? I have tried EVERYTHING!! I have not gained anything since I've been on the medicine, but I CAN NOT LOSE IT either! It is very frustraiting, I use to be 150 lbs and happy with my body! I won't even tell you what I am now, but it is very depressing and stressful. I eat right and excersise as much as I can. Does anyone have any suggestions? I guess I need to be patient and see what this new doctor says but it's hard.

What can I do next?

Ten years ago, my endocrinologist told me this: Men can eat more than women, Women can eat more than hypothyroid women. At parties, we cannot stand around the table and eat like the typical women do. Doc said if I am on the right dose and I'm taking the meds daily, I should not gain weight. I've lost weight easily by cutting way back on the sodium, suger, breads (high glycemic foods). Read Sugar Busters and try the eating habits. It worked for me. I'm overweight now and need to quit eating the junk, but being a mom with children, its tough.

Im also hypo, i was hyper after having my 2nd child, being that pregnancy caused my hyperthyroidism. When i was hyper OMG i was losing weight like crazy being that my heart rate was beating out of control, but after having the radiation treatment and having no thyroid now i gained weight big time, i went from 140 to 216 in less than a year. I went to weight watchers and dropped 16 pounds, and was like stuck at the weight for like a year, then i went to a "fat doctor"...lol....sorry thats what i call them, and i was put on adipex a rapid weight loss pill that kills your appetite, i went from 200 to 180 in less than a month, that was jan of this year. Now im not taking anything except my thyroid meds and im back at 190, but thats my fault b/c i stopped eating right and got back into fast food. I just gained the 10pd like a few months ago. But Im going back to the doctor to get put back on adipex for a month. Adipex is like a weight loss booster, you cant take it long term b/c it stops working after a month and a half, it gives you energy and kills your appetite....i think when i first started taking it i went a week without eating nothing i had to force myself to eat, it also gives you extremely dry mouth causing you to crave water like crazy...so i was on a major water kick.....i didnt want soda, juices, etc...JUST WATER
My doctor has be on .100mg, i was taking .25 but they increased my dosage.

I also have hypothyroidism. I am on synthroid and have beeno n it for about 4 years now. I am now starting to lose the weight as it takes time to find the right dose of synthroid to get on. I also started as .25 and now am at 1.0. It may just be that you are not on a strong enough dose. I kept on having to get my lab work done everysix weeks to make sure the dose was working and it never seemed to be working. Now that I am on the dose I am on now I am happy with the fact that I am losing the weight. The scale may say different but I can see and others can see that I am losing weight. Even my clothes are becoming baggy.

I too have it. Seems quite common these days. I am on 200mcg and 175mcg alternating days. I continued to gain weight no matter what I did. I starved myself, excersised to the point I was obsessed...nothing worked. I have just come to the conclusion that like it or not this is me. I continue to eat well and excersise because it makes me feel better but as far as loosing weight, I am just happy when I step on the scale one a week and have not gained any. Sorry to be so negative, but if you find something that works PLEASE let me know! :)

Looks like you have a lot of replies here, but I will chime in!
My pregnancy induced my hypothryroid as well and I have been on .25 for 5 years now.

I think if they have you on a good dose it will regulate your body to stop gaining weight CAUSED by the hypothyroidism. But your body isn't going to lose the weight you already have unless you diet and exercise (says the woman that easily has 50 pounds to lose all since the birth of that wonderful child).

It did stop me from gaining unexplained weight and I even lost 20 pounds, but I also stopped eating all snacks and I had braces put on my teeth and that slows down the eating. As soon as I got my braces off (and ate all the foods I missed for 2 years) I gained it back - my own fault.

I get my levels checked yearly so I know I am on the right dose - I am just not on the right dose of foods! :)

hi A.,

i know what you are talking about. i have gone thru it all since i was 15yrs old.what happens is that you have to get your thyroid levels balanced and what ever MGs you are at when it is balanced, that is what they will keep you on.since you are seeing a specialist every thing should be quick then you will beable to loose weight because as of right now i am also trying to loose alot of weight and thought that it would never happen but it is,so yes it is possible.you just need to focus on getting you levels together and then think about weight loss because with those levels all over the place you will gain and if it drops to low you will loose so for your body to work properly it needs to be balance.

i started off with hyper and was very skinny to the point of bone to skin then i jumped over to hypo and i started to gain and my eyes were very buldge at the top and look like i was always staring.i still have a small amount of puffness in my eyes but it is way better.i have gone thru radiation and almost to point of having surgery.it took years to get my thyroid under control but it is and now i am starting to loose my weight.

I too am hypo and recently gained 20lbs in the last 2 months. I work out almost every day and I eat well but still can't drop the weight. Lately my Dr. brought to my attn that it was the other meds I was taking that was making me gain the weight and not allowing me to lose any. I'd make sure that none of your other meds were effecting it also.

my cousin has it and she too has problems with keeping her weight under control. She really just had to cut out all the bad for you food. she eats lots of raw vegetables, fruits, low fat meats, fish etc. sushi is her favorite thing to snack on. she makes it herself and it's really healthy.
Excersise is imporant too. You really have to keep up with excersising each day. going for a brisk walk will help alot. and cut out the soda. my cousin drank 3 big bottles of water each day and she lost probably 10 lbs. just by doing that.

her dr. told her to stay away from the diet pills tho, they can have negative effects when combined with the thyroid meds. plus they are just plain not good for you. (your heart espically)

good luck with your new dr.!

Hello A.. My 14 year old daughter has underactive thyroid(Hashimotos disease)She had been on synthroid 75mg for several years. She has always been kinda chunky but, she does have a hard time losing weight. She is no longer on the medication. She didn't want to take it anymore. Since she hasn't been taking it though she hasn't been tired like she was when on it. She also has always had extremly large tonsils but, since off the medication her tonsils actually look normal. Im sure she needs on the synthroid but, she just wont take it. We found out not to long after she was diagnosed her dad has overactive thryoid disease. My daughter and I have been walking quit a bit and tht seems to help her lose a little weight and she has been doing more exercise lately.

I have been fighting the same problem since I was 14 yrs old. I'm 15 now, but my problem is a little worse. I'm what they call a "borderline hypothyroid" and none of the doctors will put me on medication to bring me to the normal range. They told me that I have to pass the border to become a complete hypothyroid before they'll put me on the medication. Now keep in mind they put me on the meds when I was 14, but only for 6 months then took me off for some reason. Anyways, I was able to loose weight, but the most dangerous way possible. I just didn't eat accept maybe 2 or 3 times a week and just a small meal. I was able to loose 30 pounds. No diets or excerise has ever worked for me either and I have tried everything. All the diet pills there are to offer and diet plans, blah blah blah. It's insane and annoying. Email me ____@____.com we should talk more.

i have had thyroid problems since i was about 12 years old. I am 23 now and still have trouble adjusting to the medication. It will always be a life long battle, they will up your dose and you'll lose weight then they will lower your dose and you may gain weight. there is no sure fire way to lose the pounds. i have maintained my weight by eating right and exercising and thats all you can do for it. My mom has had this problem all her life and its the same story. im not trying to discourage you but i dont want you to think there is something wrong with you or the medications. be sure you are seeing someone is who is a specialist in the field and ask them what you can do!
