I've had a catheter several times. The urge to pee even tho there is a catheter is normal especially after a length of time. I would call the doctor's office and ask about the blood, tho. It may also be normal but you should check to be sure. A phone call is all that's needed. The doctor's office will have you bring him in if they're concerned.
When he pees, is the urine is still flowing thru the catheter. It should be. Also, one cannot control the urine flow when there is a catheter inserted.
The catheter itself will make him feel like he really has to pee. That is normal. You say "when he pees"; I have a question: is he peeing around the catheter (out of the urethra), or do you mean when the pee drains in the catheter bag it is bloody? That is probably normal with the surgery he had and a catheter in place, but I would call the nurse to make sure. A trip to the hospital is NOT necessary.
Hi T.
I would call the doc and get a order to get it removed ASAP. Because if a cath is in to long it cause a UTI and it is very painful and he will have to be put on antibiotics until gone. I hope this will help you.
Tell your son to get well soon and Mom hang in there,

call the doc just in case it could be a kidney infection...
As the other responses said it is normal that he feels like he has to pee with the cath in. I would call and ask about the blood in the urine though. It could be normal but it could also be a mild bladder infection
