Husband Snores.. Any Suggestions That Have Helped You???

Hi Moms,

My husband works ALL THE TIME (M-F 8am-8pm friday and Saturday nights 10pm-2am) so he's exhausted by the time he hits the pillow.... Within 1 minute of shutting his eyes, he's fast asleep snoring already..... It "used" to be okay and I could deal with it. I would just kick his leg (lol) and he would readjust... He always sleeps on his side not facing me... I HAVE to sleep with a floor fan to drown out the noise. He's in great shape, no sleep apnea, or any medical conditions. Just a guy that snores. I've tried tons of different ear plugs and I can still hear him with them in (and half the time they end of falling out in the middle of the night anyways)
Well almost a year ago I had my mother and mother in law move in with us AT THE SAME TIME (they both needed our help financially) and it became World War 111 in my house (we kicked them out after 4 months of living with us).. Unfortunately due to all the stress I became a insomniac ( a whole other story) and now I wake up to a pin dropping.... I desperately want my husband to sleep with me again but because of his snoring he's had to move into the other room about 4 months ago :0(
Does anyone have any suggestions that they've actually tried already and worked for them? I really want my husband back in our room but his snoring and my lack of sleep as it is wont work..
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I'm not going to read what other wrote. I just thought I would let you know that my husband is also a HORRIBLE snorer. He sleeps in the living room and I am in the bedroom. It has been like that for a year. We have a healthy sex life, we cuddle, we love each other....but I can't sleep with him!

One tip I read a long time ago was to sew a pocket on the back of a men's t-shirt big enough to hold a tennis ball. Right before 'hitting the hay' slip a tennis ball into the pocket. The t-shirt is comfortable enough to wear while sleeping but the tennis ball keeps the wearer from staying flat on their back.

I haven't had to try it yet - I have a pointy elbow. LOL!

Ear plugs! Get the most heavy duty ear plugs you can find. That is the only thing that has worked for me.

I'm a light sleeper, too. If there's a light shower of rain outside, I wake up. I've been sleeping with earplugs for the last 6 or 7 years. My husband snores like a locomotive and the ones rated 33 cut down on the jackhammering in my ear from the other side of the bed, not completely, but a lot. Also, my husband recently did a sleep study, recommended by his doctor, because I was convinced he has apnea. Turns out he does have apnea and his snoring is pretty serious, medically, so he's now on something called a c-pap which feeds him oxygen while he sleeps. Although the locomotive is gone, Darth Vader has taken his place. I still need earplugs, but now with the earplugs there's dead silence. Sleeping has much improved!

DIVORCE!!! Ha, ha, ha!! My husband snore like crazy, too.

Have him go to an ENT. Since there is no medical issue and he's not overweight, he may have something in the back of his mouth that is misshapen. The ENT will see it right away and make suggestions. There are some great (but surgical) was to curb snoring. A simple visit will just cost a copay!

My husband snors too but not very loud. My husband says I snore which I dispute. Anyhow a few months ago, we got samples of breath right strips. I used them & my husband said it improved.

You can try a sound machine with white noise- some people find this helpful

Just a suggestion- maybe you should work more on your insominia. Melatonin helps some people & can be found in the health food store. acupuncture may be a option as well for you to help & maybe even your husband for th snoring.

YES! No one can snore if they are in the most restful sleep. Obviously he is so busy and probably overtired that he never gets to that point. I started my snoring, insomniac husband on a supplement called RestEZ. It's doesn't make you sleepy, it just gets you to the point that you can relax and get to that restful sleep. When my husband takes it, he sleeps through the night and doesn't snore....if he forgets it or falls asleep before he takes it, I sometimes end up in another room, lol.

RestEZ is a blend but is primarily valerian root. You can google valerian root and read about it's properties. It is safe and not addictive.

God bless,

M.

You should never have seperated. You should have stayed sleeping in the same room. Believe it or not after a period of time you would have not even noticed the snoring at all but seeing you moved out not only did you not try to learn to live with the snoring you sent your husband the wrong message. I would never make my husband sleep in another room and I don't think any man could snore like him. But since he has lost weight and started walking he doesn't snore quite as much. Our joke used to be that the neighbors are all up late because they can hear him snoring. Or the cows next door are bawling because they are keeping in tune with his snoring. I thought I would die the first few months because the snoring was just keeping me awake and I was dead on my feet during the day and I can not sleep when it's day light out. But after awhile I got so I could fall asleep with his snoring. Believe it or not after sleeping with him snoring after eight years and then he quit I lay in bed and have trouble going to sleep because there is no thunder in our bedroom any longer. Just move back in with him and lay there and count sheep, sing to yourself or think of the good ole days. Anything but stay in the bed with him. You will get used to it before you know it.

Hey Kristy, I too have had this problem. I am a light sleeper as well, most of the time. Therefore, sometimes it's irritating and upsets me and I end up going to the living-room and other times I just try to fall asleep 1st. Nevertheless, My hubby is overweight, but doesn't have sleep apnea (he tested for this before and doesn't have this) on the other hand even when he wasn't overweight he still snored the same. Anyways, I deal with it as it happens., be it falling asleep first or putting the sleep timer on the TV to as you say drown out the noise till I fall asleep.

Check this site out, as maybe you can do one of the recommendations here express. Good Luck!

Contact your dr and request him be referred in for a sleep study. My 5 yr old just did it, and I am going to do it myself. Now they arent cheap to do, even with my insurance, my deductible is $250, plus 15% after that, and since I hadnt used anything this yr I had to pay the full deductible and then some. So anywho...what I learned from my daughter doing it is there are a lot of reason why someone snores, and snoring is basically not healthy, with or without apnea. Doing the sleep study can figure out when you snore, how often, if you do it when laying only on back or a certain side. and it monitors oxygen levels and can tell you if you are losing oxygen at all. And once all these factors are determined, then the dr can make suggestions. They also see/treat people with insomnia, so my fiance is going to go too, because he suffers from insomnia. It was very informative and helpful. I would look into for him, sounds like it would help you tremendously. Good luck!

Hi Kristy, I use to snore. In 2000, it got to be so bad, my husband and I argued as he couldn't sleep. He works for the post office. Anyway, I went to my doctor, he suggested a sleep study. Found out that I would stop breathing in my sleep. I had the base of my tongue narrowed(as it was larger than it was suppose to be)and had my uvula removed(the thing that hangs from the roof of your mouth and looks like a punching bag). Before I had the surgery, I had to wear a cpap. This would keep everything open so I didn't die in my sleep. After my surgery, I had another sleep study and it worked! I have kids and one was 2 and the other was 5. Maybe you can suggest it to him, see his doctor and talk to him/her about it. K.

I don't have any great advice, my husband used to snore really loud. When he was in basic training, the other guys would shine a light in his face every time he started. For the first few years of our marriage I wore earplugs. After awhile it just got to the point where he wasn't snoring much, I don't know why. Now I just kick him if he does.
I personally only snore if I'm exhausted. I breath through my nose most of the time and don't snore. But if I am exhausted, I seem to sleep with my mouth open, snore, and even drool. Maybe he needs to start taking a short nap or doing something different to cut down on the exhaustion. Maybe that was the difference for my husband, as his job changed he was less exhausted and was sleeping better.

I could have written your post (with the exception of parents moving in :)... We have tried ear plugs, the tennis ball, an ENT, a sleep study & now we sleep in other rooms. He is thin, healthy, exercises, doesn't drink or smoke- he just snores like thunder! Separate rooms is not ideal, but otherwise, I literally do not go to sleep until he gets up at 6 (& my son is usually up at 7)... there is a surgery for $2,500 but it only has a 50% chance of working & he isn't going to try it.

What makes you think he doesn't have sleep apnea? Just because you are not overweight does not mean you don't have sleep apnea, the only way to know for sure is with a sleep study. Severe snoring is a sign of this and I would get it checked by a doctor.
Some people swear by those breathe right nasal strips maybe you can try that.

I'm a very light sleeper and insomniac as well, and my husband is sometimes a snorer. He got a mouthpiece like some of the others mentioned, but he got it from our dentist. I've heard they have cheaper mouthpieces at Walgreen's. It works well as long as he remembers to use it. I also take Ambien occassionally to help me with the insomnia, but I don't like taking meds, so only take it when I'm exhausted. It helps me catch up on my rest when I need it. I always use earplugs, too. Good luck. I hope you find something that works for you soon.

The thing that worked for my husband was the mouthguard thing that you can order online. As well as helping me, the main thing has been that he can get a good night's sleep, he noticed a huge improvement in how he felt during the day. Nasal strips and sprays did NOTHING for him. Try one, it is totally worth the money!!!

my grandfather snored and drove my grandmother nuts since she couldn't sleep! He opted for a simple surgery that opens up the sinuses. His were enlarged and it was causing the snoring. They also said it was healthier for him to be able to sleep w/o snoring, so it was a win win situation!

Kristy - Some people on here don't have much sympathy, I say send him to visit them for a week and see if that changes their snarky attitude.
OK I snore, my sister (who now lives with me) snores enough to wake the dead, my Dad was one too. I am currently single - ha ha. I have been having a hard time falling asleep too lately. I was hoping for some great advice on here when I read your plea, I think I will try those mouth things seems like that looks like the most hopeful. Good luck to you both.

Pick up a box of breathe right strips at walmart. My man does the same thing and I either end of shaking him awake so he can re-adjust, or have to put a pillow over my head. He tried the breathe right strips and they lessened the snore, because they open up your nasal airways. Its the only thing I know to do.

Dear Kristy,
I hate to admit it, but I snore. My son snores. We are a snoring family.
My son, the little monster, even recorded me snoring with his phone and shared it with his friends at school.
We don't have any health problems to cause it....we just snore.
When we're super happy and sound asleep.
My daughter doesn't snore and she always said, "Good Lord! Between you downstairs and my brother upstairs, how can I get any sleep?"
Get earplugs.
Try moving him into a different position.
I'm a bit of an insomniac too so I only snore when I am super sound asleep
Snoring doesn't bother me. If I wake up and hear my son snoring, it's kind of comforting to me and I go back to sleep.
They have nose strips I think to help with that.
Try them.

You'll figure something out.
Best wishes!

I've noticed that my husband snores more during allergy season - we've decided his sinuses must be swollen & at night it just makes him snore more, so if he takes an antihistimine it may help. We recently replaced our bedroom carpet with wood floors & (since all that dust is gone) he is no longer snoring. Good luck!

Has he done a sleep study? Both my husband and I have for various reasons - for me, I'm a horribly light sleeper and rarely go more than 4 hours at a time. My husband is a snorer, and I easily could have written your post.

Almost every night I do the leg kick repeatedly, ask him to roll onto his side, have tried special pillows, devices, Breathe Right strips, etc.

In his case, most of it is related to a broken nose in high school, being 50 lbs overweight and a deep sleeper - the sleep study showed nothing abnormal other than being a loud snorer (and I don't think he's all that bad).

I've kicked him out of the bed several times so I can sleep a little better.

Sometimes, taking a nasal steroid such as Rhinocort AQ has been helpful to open the nasal passages more. Usually, though, I make him wear 2 breathe right strips.

We sleep with a high-powered fan on as well in attempt to drain out a lot of noises that keep me awake, so I don't know if that would also help you.

Good luck! You are certainly not alone!
