So What Happened?

Whew! long Day! Mostly it went well. It took longer to get the pain meds at Walgreens than to have the teeth extracted and leave the dental office. He has done quite well today besides the fact he does not like the food choices. He begged for toast! But I never gave in. What a goof I married. I am crossing my fingers that the next couple of days breeze by just as easy. Thanks again for ALL the great support! S.

Lots of Percoset and mashed potatos and gravy. That was the only thing I could eat for a week! KFC loved me.

You know, it's possible that you have nothing to worry about. When my husband had his wisdom teeth out, he was about 45. He was out playing golf that afternoon! He did not have adverse side effects and didn't even use but a couple of his pain pills. He has a somewhat active lifestyle and really tries to have healthy habits. I think all of that helped a lot.

Well, I had my bottom ones out two weeks ago. Everyone kept telling me there horror stories, but I'm happy to report it wasn't bad at all. It only took the dentist like 20 min, I didn't have any after pain at all. I went home and slept for 5 hours after, and even was able to eat that evening. Tell him to chew his food in the middle. I usually recommend Aleve for everything, but u can't take it after anykind of surgery its a blood thinner. They have this OTC stuff at walgreens called percogesics. It is basically benedryll and tylenol together in one pill. Have him take 2 before he goes to t he dentist

May God be with you~~~~~~Through all the surgery's my husband has had in the last 2-3 years I have to be totally honest, yes they are complete babies.... The pain a woman can take is way more than the pain a man can take. If your a woman of faith I say pray, also just baby the big guy he's gonna need it, I've had 4 pulled.

I don't think it will be nearly as bad as you are anticipating. My now husband and I were dating when he had his removed and he was so pumped full of pain meds he was pretty much sedated to the point he would get up to use the bathroom and then lay back down on the couch. Just make sure you have plenty of soft foods around (jello, pudding, ice cream, mashed potatoes ect) and you will have no trouble at all!

My husband just had his out about a yr ago, and didn't really have any trouble. They were sore, but the pain killers they give are actually pretty good stuff. Just keep him pumped full of that and rest, he should be good to go.

My husband recently had three of his pulled. After the surgery he went home and slept for a few hours. My kids were home at that point and he just stayed in the room and I brought him what he needed. He's not one to complain when he's in pain unless it goes on for days. So, he was pretty good until a couple of days later when the pain wasn't getting any better at all. I'm telling you this to warn you that this could happen to your husband. The oral surgeon said that he might have pieces of tooth under the hole that will eventually come through on their own. He's had two pieces come out. The first came out on it's own. The second I had to dig out with tweezers. Since they have come out he has been in much less pain. I think that if you have two kids then you'll be able to survive this. What's one more kid for a few days, right?!
Good luck,
C. Y.

stock up on his favorite soup and snacks he won't need to chew, straws to drink things. We'll maybe not the straws, I don't remember what the instructions were for my husband but my son had 2 teeth pulled he couldn't have straws because he could suck the clots off his gums.

My husband had a prescription for painkillers and took them when he wouldn't be driving. I don't remember him using ice packs for that and he went back to work and his usual daddy chores the same day.

My biggest advice is make him aware you're not going to baby him for this. You'll save that for shoulder surgery, vastectomy and prostate exams.

This sounds ridiculous and looks ridiculous, but my doctor had us use tube socks. You safety pin the toes together then stuff them with ice packs then you tie them up around the top of your head. I loved my ice pack socks! I had all 4 teeth out and was in a lot of pain. Good Luck!

Well, my husband and I both had complications while getting ours removed so we had awful experiences! My husband's tooth broke apart while they were removing it and he had a tiny little piece left behind that caused TONS of pain until he went back a week later and they saw it and got it out. Then he got two dry sockets :( Mine wasn't easy either because mine were actually fused to my jawbone so I had to have them removed by a maxillofacial (sp?) surgeon. We both needed strong painkillers! Ice helps and of course SOFT foods like pudding, jello, mashed potatoes, ice cream, oatmeal, etc... I know when my dad his removed (this was probably 20 years ago!) the dentist pulled them at the office and told him to take tylenol! LOL My husband and I both recommend you ask the dentist for this plastic syringe that has a squirter on the end of it, your husband can use it to clean and food debris out of the hole left behind where his teeth used to be, it helps to prevent infection. Oh, and I think it helped me to gently rinse my mouth with salt water to quicken the healing process although it didn't taste that great.
Good luck! And you know what.... all this talking I didn't give you any advice yet. I guess you can go on a shopping excursion since your husband will be knocked up on pain meds and won't know the difference and you don't have any kids to haul along! :)

They should give him pain meds... make sure he takes them! For at least the first 24-48 hours even if he's not feeling any pain at the time, make sure he takes the damn pill! LOL! If the pain gets ahead of him it'll be way worse!

I had mine surgically removed, three of them, and I was entirely under for the procedure. An oral surgeon did it all right in his office, and it was a breeze. I woke up extremely groggy, don't really remember being driven home, but when I woke up four or so hours later, I was perfectly fine. I had to stay home from work for several days, docs orders, but I honestly could have gone back to work much sooner. I was given an entire prescription, with a refill, for oxicotin(Spelling!) and never took a single one. Wisdom teeth really aren't bad, at all.....it may be a little more difficult for your husband considering he's older...I was only in my early twenties when I had mine out....

Now, when your hubbie has the tonsils removed at 43, then he can whine! That was HARD! I had mine taken out just about a year ago, and I'd rather have and raise quintuplets...

LOTS OF DRUGS!! And a little advice, if you think he is getting a dry socket, put a wet tea bag on the area. IT really does work. I had my top two out (seperately) and they weren't so bad. But they say the bottom are worse. And he is a little old to be having it done. SO just LOTS OF DRUGS. Knock him out good, keep the ice handy. Milkshakes and that kind of stuff are great too. Then, hey, enjoy the quiet while he is sleeping it all off!!

Make sure that you have plenty of childrens liquid tylenol and liquid motrin and give in to your husband one every 2 hours... like motrin at noon, tylenol at 2, motrin at 4, tylenol at 6 and so on. The liquid he can swish around in his mouth and it helps to medicate the area faster and then when he swallows it is works through his bloodstream. I learned that when I had my tonsils out and found out I was allergic to pain pills. It worked better anyway and when I needed a root canal that worked then to. Not to mention, you aren't groggy and miserable on top of it.

I had all four of my teeth taken out the summer before my senior year of high school. All of mine were impacted in the bone, so they had to be cut out. I was put totally under and it lasted about an hour. I had tylox for the pain and they were great! I did pretty much sleep for three days straight, but that was a combination of the drugs and being tired from the surgery. I remember my mom waking me up to eat, but I can't remember what it was. I do remember lots of bleeding the first day and having to change out the gauze every hour or so. I'm not sure if that much bleeding was normal, but everytime I have surgery I tend to bleed more than the norm, so it probably was a bit excessive. Take the pain medicine, even if you don't feel it. I felt fine on day two and didn't take them, but an hour later I was in some serious pain! Hope everything goes well!

I didn't have much of a problem with mine. My daughter was 2 and I was watching 2 6-month olds and my MIL helped with those while I was in surgery. As soon as I got home I was back to taking care of the kids (I have a extremely high pain tolerance and was off the pain killers within 6 hours of surgery). It just depends on how well he can recover (or wants to recover). I had ice packs for the 15 minute drive home and to help with the swelling, and then just ate stuff that wouldn't get caught in the pockets. Just kept my mouth clean and rinsed out after I ate. Hopefully he won't be too much of a baby (though husbands can when they are in pain) for you to get something done. Soft-serve ice cream was great for me for a couple days.

My husband and I both had ours out and it really isn't that bad. Or course he struggled a little more. He wsa 30 and had all 4 I was in college when I had all 4 out. Just follow the doctors orders and feed him the drugs they give you and you'll be fine.
