Humidifier or Vaporizer? - San Jose,CA

My daughter's five week old baby has a bad cold. He is very congested. We were wondering what is better to use, a humidifer or a vaporizer? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Poor baby and Mommy.
Pediatricians usually recommend the cool mist vaporizer because there is less risk of burning but I swear by the warm steam. The cool mist ones are also noisier.
For my daughter I use Vicks Rub on her chest. To loosen the mucous you can also try Neil Med Sinus Irrigation for babies and toddlers. It's saline solution in an aerosol can with a nosepiece. The best thing about it is that the mist coming out is slow and gentle, not like shooting drops up their nose. Often after using the mist babies will sneeze, getting rid of a lot of the junk. And then you don't really have to use the nasty bulb aspirators. I found the Neil Med can at the Kaiser pharmacy. You don't have to be a member to shop there.

I never had luck with either but you never know so I would try both. I did use Vicks Vapor rub on my baby's chest and that seemed to help alot. Poor baby. Good luck!

Cold mist humidifier is what we use and recommended by my ped.

I use a warm air humidifier and get Vick's Vapor Steam to accompany it at night. It works wonderfully.

I always used a cool mist humidifier.

We had better luck with the vaporizer, though we were told not to use it because it harbors bacteria. I just change the water every day it is in use and clean it with white vinegar every other day. The cool mist humidifier we had made our little one cold, so if you go that route, be sure to check on the baby to see if he needs some extra bundling.

I have had much success with a Humidifier but we actually had to use cold air humidifier because the warm air made my guy more congested. Also she will have to get the suction-ator as we call it (bulb syring suction) to suck out the mucus as they don't know how to blow their nose and there is no other way out. Try to get the one with the rounded end not the pointy one, they will like that much better. Good luck!!
