Has anyone else heard of the new thing with kids huffing the gas out of a whip cream can?
So What Happened?™
No I'm not worried about my kids one bit with this. They are tooooo in LOVE with the whip cream. :) I just never heard of it before.

It isn't new. People have been doing it for many, many years. It is the inhalation of nitrous oxide aka laughing gas.

this isn't new. This has been going on for a while, WD-40, Whipped Cream, Hair Spray - anything that has an aerosol or gas...
Other things they try? The choke themselves. That was VERY bothersome when I saw this. Kids try and choke themselves with belts for the "high"...unfortunately, some kids have died from it and it looked like suicide. The families are in deep grief.
COMMUNICATION!! Talk with your kids!! Be a part of their lives!!! Get involved...sad that kids do not understand the ramifications of their actions and think they are INVINCIBLE!! They aren't. They just find out too late.

This is not new. I personally did this in high school, which was a while ago.
ETA--I just wanted to add that this was a VERY once in a while thing for me during my senior year in high school only. My parents were great & totally on top of things with me, so the fact that I tried this wasn't swayed one way or the other based on parental involvement/love/attention. I didn't do any other drugs or drink alcohol until I was older.

This isn't new. I new kids when I was in school doing this (mid 80's). It's sad. I just don't get where the child/parent break down happens. Is it an age, an event ?!?!?

It came out with the Demi Moore event and I don't understand why kids want to do anything they can, or adults either, where you lose control of your body and mind. If you look up Nirous Oxide online the whippets and canisters look so cool and inviting for kids. One even said 'sexxy' or something like that. Why? I know it's gone on for years and other things they can use or sniff or breathe. I still don't understand 'why'.

They sell whip-its in every head shop in America. It does make you light headed. Remember Rush. It used to do the same thing. I didn't know back then how dangerous it was and how many vital brain cells it kills.

It's not new. If you are worried about your kids, treat it like anything you'd caution them about. We explained to the sks that even things that are not stereotypical drugs are still potentially harmful. Kids think "oh, it's just...." and don't realize the dangers.
Simple things like eating dinner together most nights can help you keep connected to your kids and help them stay out of trouble.

It's not new! I'm 42 and we used to do whip its and nitrous balloons when we went to the beach and jam band concerts in high school and college. It's Nitrous Oxide - laughing gas like you get at the dentist. I'm pretty sure kids have been doing these at least since the 60s or 70s. You'll almost always going to hear or see a nitrous tank and balloons in the lots at music festivals and "hippie" "jam band" shows.
