How Would You React to This OB/GYN Appt?

I have just went to the OB/GYN office yesterday. I am a little perplexed by a few issues. I actually went there due to a side-effect that I was having from taking medication. Then I was concerned that I may have been pregnant and wanted to make sure the medication I was on wasn't effecting that.

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for the last few months. I am either way stressed out or something is wrong with me. So I scheduled an appt yesterday w/ a dr. that isn't my normal dr, of who I have never seen before. She gave me something to counter act the side effect, which is fine.

My other concern was that I haven't started yet this month, and I am pretty much like clockwork. So I took a test on Sunday - it was negative. This is why I thought the medication was effecting the test, after having read the website of the company that makes the test. Last month my cycle was VERY light, barely a day and did have light spotting for a week.

So I took one again on Sunday - that was negative. At this point I am about 2 weeks late. So I went to the doctor and she said not to worry about it, that the tests that you take at home are pretty accurate and not to be too concerned. She just told me that if it is consistant after a few months then to come back.

Has anyone just skipped their periods for a few months? Then not be pregnant? I am just a little concerned that something is wrong. I know my normal doctor was keeping an eye out me for that PPV virus or something...which can lead to cervical cancer. My mom just went through her second diagnosis of breast cancer.

My other question is: Should I go back and schedule w/ my other doctor in a few weeks? Or go immediately? Not sure what to do at this point.

Thanks,
K.

So What Happened?

I ended up just being about 2 weeks late, just as I was getting ready to schedule another appointment! :-) Thank you for all of your advice.

Hi K.,
I had the samething happen to me a couple years ago. I was 2 weeks late & the tests kept coming up negative. My Dr. checked me out & determined it was an ovarian cyst. Apparently something pretty common & nothing to worry about. I skipped my cycle completely that month & the next month everything was fine. If you're still worried that something is wrong, I would see your regular Dr. Your intuition may be trying to tell you something and if not, it's best to put your mind at ease.

The same thing has happened to me before. I called the ob doc's office and they said that the tests are very accurate these days so to not be worried...but reality is "you still worry".
I personally would go off the medicine you are on...in case you are pregnant. They say that a lot of med's don't effect those tests...but just to be safe. If you are concerned (which I know you are) call "your" doctor and schedule something ....you have the right...and you are paying them a lot of money to take care of you :-)
Good Luck ;-)
And I HOPE YOU GET PREGNANT OR ARE PREGNANT ALREADY!

i worked for an ob-gyn for 5 yrs- it sounds to me that this dr didn't listen to you. i would cll your normal dr and explain that waiting isn't something you are comfortable with. he'll most likely suggest a blood pregnancy test which works 10 days after a missed period. in the meantime try not to stress, 1) it'll cuz you not to have a period or 2) if you are pregnant, stress is not good for you or baby.

I would immediately go to my nomal OB and express your concerns fully. If you are attempting to become pregnant then it is a possibility that any medication could affect the natural production of hormones and chemicals in your body. I personally took 4 home test and they all came back Neg. yet when I went to have a blood test at my OB/GYN it was positive. Always keep in mind that if you are preg. then you should keep your stress level at a min!! I wish you the best.

I would definately talk to your regular doctor ASAP!! My sister was in a similar situation which she was taking home preg tests and showing negative, and indeed, after doing bloodwork from her regular dr, she had been pregnant all along!!

My daughter has some of the same problems with periods after her babies. She had a cyst. Maybe you need to check with your regular doctor, I would be skeptical of a new doctor that didn't know me anyway and telling me it was ok and check back in a few months if it is still happening. Go see your doctor. They should know you well enough to know what to check for. Why did you see a new doctor? Your ob should be someone you trust and can talk to.

While trying to conceive our daughter for over a year I would miss periods often. My doctor told us the stress of everyday life topped with the need to have a baby can do that to a woman. As for going back to your regular doctor, What's the harm in going to your appointment? That way you can feel confident knowing you are seeking help in all aspects! I would keep him or her imformed about the medciation the other has you on to be safe! Good luck in you baby endeavors!

My period skips out on me for months at time, and it's just 'normal' for my body. I've never had regular, consistent periods. The year we started TTC baby #2, my period disappeared for 6 months. And, of course, we thought I was pregnant at first. I ended up having to go the dr. and they put me on Provera, a hormone that helps get your period started again. If there's been no illness, or anything out of the ordinary in your life, then there's not much a dr. can do, really, but wait and see what happens within the next couple of months. And I know how frustrating that can and will be for you, but that's pretty much all you can do. So my advice is hang in there, keep accurate accounts of your cycles, and check back with the dr. in another couple of months.

You COULD be skipping periods due to stress, bad diet, lack of exercise, or exhaustion.

However, if you think you're pregnant you probably are - I am a believer in women knowing their bodies better than any doctor. Have you had any other signs of early pregnancy?

Not to refute the dr, but I've never had a home pregnancy test work until 12 weeks. With my last pregnancy, I even had two blood tests - at 8 and 10 weeks respectively - prior to having XRays and both returned negative. Some women just don't have enough progesterone until later into the pregnancy to get a positive positive and end up with several false negatives first. I am said woman. You may be also - was that true of your previous pregnancy(ies)?

Also, keep in mind that it takes awhile to start ovulating typically after discontinuing birth control - and you WANT to be pregnant, probably pretty badly, so your body could be playing tricks on you.

I'd discontinue any medications that may adversely affect a pregnancy immediately and give it a month or two. Wait until you think you're ten or twelve weeks and try another test if you haven't menstruated by that point. If you receive a negative, definitely make an appt with your regular OB/GYN.

GOOD LUCK!

Being late 1-2 weeks is nothing to worry about. Instead worry about what is causing you so much stress. Keep in mind that the newer birth control pills make it possible to have only a couple of periods a year. When I was younger, I would frequently miss period for up to six months due to stress, weight gain or weigth loss. If you are more than 2 mos. late I would contact your doctor. Also if your spotting changes and gets heavier and your period does not start call your doctor. Good luck.

You absolutely have to go back to the Dr. You have to be your own advocate. You understand and know your body, so listen to your intuition and sixth sense when it tells you that something is wrong. Go back, and don't take no for an answer until they have run tests and can give you a concrete answer as to WHY your body is behaving abnormally.

I would get a blood test. I had four negative pregnancy tests with my first daughter after I was 2 weeks late with my period. Finally, I went and had a blood test and they were able to confirm pregnancy.

Yes I skipped my period for 6 months before - I went to my doctor every month and nothing - we eventually chalked it up to stress because I was in the middle of buying a house, losing weight for my wedding and planning a wedding. Once the house was purchased and the wedding was over everything went back to normal. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless there is pain involved.

Hope everything works out.

Hi K.,
When I was pregant with my first baby, a girl now 5. I never had a positive pregnancy test till I was 4 months pregant. For the first 4 months my ob said I wasn't even pregnant. I took test after test, went to the doctor to do their test, they even took blood and that came back negative. I thought I had cancer or somthing was seriously wrong. The doctor told me just to wait and I'll start... he even went as far to put me on medicine that would make me start my preiod and nothing... 4 weeks after that is when I had a positive pregnancy test. The medicne he gave me to make me start could have made me have a miscarrage. Thank god it didn't. But they were wrong all along, telling me I wasn't pregnant, they would find out what was wrong. Come to find out they were wrong, and didn't pay attention to what I was telling them. If I were you I would make an appointment with my doctor in the next two weeks and explain what is going on. Also listen to your body, it will let you know. This was my first baby and I was clueless on what to expect. All of my pregnancy were very diffrent.
Best of luck and God Bless

I went through this twice between my 2 boys. My doctor said it was due to being heavy and not ovalating correctly. I was sure I was prego both times. Very stressful. I had had a misscarriage too and she said that may have been part of it.
Good luck.

Dear K.:

It is possible to have a cessation of periods without being pregnant. It happened to me in adolescence, twice. The culprit each time was a cyst on my ovary that prevented ovulation - no ovulation, no period. By all means, see your regular doctor in a few weeks as he or she knows you better than the new doctor, and get checked for a possible ovarian cyst or other problem. In the meantime, keep testing once a week. If you are very concerned, see your doctor sooner. I hope this helps!

you know yourself and your own body. It is your job to be in control of your own medical care. I hate to say that doctors don't know everything and they do screw up(*I really do hate saying it since I am in the middle of becoming a doc!*) I would call immediately and schedule with my regular doc. Word of advice, when you go in for the other appointment, do not say anything about the other doc your saw, there are a lot of inter office medical politics and you want to try to avoid making your doc feel like she is stepping on the toes of another. At the end of the appointment after she has told you what she thinks and all, then if you want to you can say something about the other appointment.
