My oldest son had thrush when he was about 7 months old. He was prescribed Nystatin and I had to give him 1/2 ml to each side of his cheeks 4 times a day. We have insurance so I'm not sure how much it costs. I've never heard of an over the counter remedy. My doctor also said that in order to prevent it from coming back we had to disinfect EVERYTHING! Thrush will survive on toys and can reinfect your daughter if you don't. That means washing all stuffed animals she likes to put in her mouth, and cleaning plastic toys in a mild bleach solution. I filled the bath tub with hot water and a little bleach and dumped all the plastic toys in, let it sit for about an hour then rinsed and let them dry. Also be sure to wipe down the bars of the crib if she likes to chew on them. You should be as thorough as possible to prevent her from getting it again. Anything that goes in her mouth needs to be cleaned. I hope that this helps!

Your babies thrush will need to be treated with an antibiotic, or it will not go away. Thrush is the same overgrowth of bacteria that a woman experiences with a yeast infection - and if yourve ever had a yeast infection, you know that it does NOT go away without medical intervention.

My daughter contracted thrush at 3 months old, and I was unaware she had it - it was only when I could no longer breastfeed because my nipples were cracked and bleeding that I discovered that we'd both had it for months, and that my nipples were infected as well. No over the counter remedies will for sure get rid of the thrush to the point where it will not come back.

Call the ped, the medication he/she gives you is very mild and it will only take a few days for your babies thrush to go away.

hi, jumping in, this is important... YOU DO NOT TREAT THRUSH WITH ANTIBIOTICS. Thrush is a yeast infection. Giving antibiotics would make it worse if anything. Also, I cannot tell you how many moms i know who have been sure their breastfeeding child had thrush and they were mistaken. This does not mean that you are mistaken, but you definitely need to see a doctor about it because if she has thrush, you almost certainly do too and you will both need treatment. (if you're not both in serious pain when you nurse, it's probably not thrush.)

Gentian violet is the common otc remedy for this, but keep an eye on it and an open mind that you might need a doc's assistance to eradicate the yeast if it's really thrush. good luck!

T.,

The home remedies are gentian violet or grapefruit seed extract and I thinks some folks use probiotics. The medical one is usually nystatin. You need an antifungal because thrush is a fungus. Antibiotics will make it worse.

Check out www.askdrsears.com or www.drjaygordon.com or www.kellymom.com Between those 3 sites you can usually find the answer to pretty much any question.

Yes there is if you go to K-Mart in the hispanic section of the Health and beauty dept there is a little bottle called Gretian Violet. It is purple and stains be careful. All you have to do is coat a Q-tip with it and rub it on your childs tongue. It will stain the mouth purple but wears away. This works wonders. I used this for my Daughter years ago. I heard of this through my husbands Grandmother, and you know back then they knew all the old home remedies. If you cant find it make sure you ask the Pharmacy. Good luck with this. It really does work. C.

My son got trush at a very early age back in January when he was little. It was awful for both of us as I was breastfeeding at the time. He was given a medicine to put on his tongue and any other area in his mouth. And yes no antibiotics. What helped also help him was giving him probiotics in his bottle. If you are breastfeeding it's important that you put a small amount of the probiotics on your nipple. If breastfeeding, beware that you will get the yeast infection on your breast so you will need to treat it with over the counter vaginal yeast medicine and place on your breasts. Ofcourse you would have to wipe it off very soap and water very well before offering him the breast at the next feeding.

Ofcourse, you will need to take her to the pediatrician to have it checked and get the prescription (which is NOT an antibiotic) to treat the trush.

If you have any further questions about it please feel free to email me ____@____.com as I dealt with this for 3 months with my son and thankfully once I learned the tricks it never returned.

I hope your daughter gets some relief soon!

My daughter just had this and was prescribed Nystatin Oral Suspension USP. The doctor was able to prescribe this over the phone (Kaiser) but I also had to put it on my breast and you need to wash all pacifiers and bottles alot to keep it from being introduced back into the mouth.

Good luck

You should take your little one to the dr., even if you know what antibiotic to treat him/her with. You dont wont him/her to be immune to the antibiotic, because in the future if she really needs that antiobtic, it may not be effected

Dear T.,

I don't know about over the counter meds, but I went on the MayoClinic.com website to Oral Thrush, and it said that the doctor would probably prescribe a mild anti-fungal medication for the baby, and just be sure that everything that she uses is washed and rinsed well until the thrush is over. Good Luck, C. N.

Neither of my kids have had this, but I know a lot of people whose kids have. I am pretty sure that this is something that needs to be treated by an antibiotic from the Dr. If you are breastfeeding too this could be passed back and forth, so you might want to discuss with the Dr. being treated yourself. Hope that helps a little.
