Hi Moms! My four month old has eczema all over his little legs. My doctor said to use vaseline or Eucerine cream. I use the eucerine during the day and vaseline at night. I have been doing this for four days and it isn't getting any better or worse. How long does it take to clear up and is there anything else I can do for it? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your wonderful advice. sounds like I need to give up cheese and chocolate, my only two vices in this world. On the bright side I might actually end up losing all the baby weight this time. I'm going to stop the vasoline and only use eucerine. Hopefully it will clear up quickly. Thanks again for all the great advice!

My daughter also has eczema since she was a baby (she's 2 1/2 now). I took her to an pediatric allergist and she was put on zyrtec 2xday. Also I was told to buy a cream called "acid mantle". You have to get it a the pharmacy, but it's not prescription. She has bouts of it when she is stressed or anxious. The meds help it, but I was told that kids just have to outgrow it. Good luck w/ the little guy.

Baby Eczmea. Bought at target. I got the shampoo and the lotion. They worked for my daughter. I started with the hydrocortizone but all it did was make it go away and it would come back a couple of days later. The shampoo and lotion combo works really good because at bath time she really got lathered in it and then I finished her up with the lotion. Good luck.

The ONLY product that worked for my daughter's eczema was Calendula Cream by California Baby. I wasted a lot of money on useless products until I found the calendula cream. All of the California Baby products are wonderful and made for super-sensitive skin. Target now carries a small amount of their product, but the calendula cream can be purchased locally at Whole Foods, or on-line. Good luck.

1) I found this product at Target in the baby aisle; By Gentle Naturals "Disney Baby" Baby Eczmea Cream - very greasy. Otherwise 2) my son got a prescription from his peditrician for Triamcinolon 0.1% (Generic for Triamcinolone) - apply 2x daily to eczema when active. Make sure that you get a good lotion for your baby and apply after being in the water. The RX works almost overnight. Good luck!

Hi Tricia, My daughter also has eczema. If Eucerin or Aquaphor doesn't work try 1% Hydrocordizone Cream. This is over the counter. Try it for a week if the eczema is still not better you may want to go to the docter and get a stronger Hydrocordizone cream....like 2.5% (which has to be prescriped by a doctor). With the 1% Hydrocordizone I was told to put it on 2 times per day and also use the Eucerin or Aquaphor cream 2-3 times per day. Also, try to limit her baths, this dries out there skin and I use Aveeno Shampoo and Body Wash.....I was told it is more mild on the skin. Good Luck! Let me know if you have any questions. A.

what type of soap are you using at bath time. Try Dove on his legs or anywhere else the eczema is. Baby soap will dry him out. Just pat his legs dry and put the Eucerine on his moist skin, that will help lock the moisture in. I have two kids with this and it does get easier. My middle son has it on his face and his cheeks would crack and bleed. We have it under control now but it took time.

My son (now 4yo) has had excema since that age too. About 2 years ago we started using Gold Bond's Lotion - it's expensive, but it works. He only gets a bath every other day because of it - and it's much worse when he's warm. Good luck. It's annoying more than anything. But now that he's older - he scratches it and bleeds. Good luck!

Hi Tricia!
The ONLY thing that worked for my daughter was PURE jojoba oil and the Burt's Bees apricot oil. You can order it online. I tried everything else and those were the only things that worked for her.

Good luck!

My son had eczema when he was around that age and the only thing that took care of it was hydrocortizone 1% cream. My pediatrician recommended it and everytime he had a flare up, i used it and it went away. It's safe and you can use it whenever you need to. Good luck!

Tricia,
Hi! I am sorry that your baby is dealing with this. You can try everything on the market to deal with the skin issues, but 90% of the time that a child has excema, its something in their diet.

I made the mistake of trying everything on the market, not knowing that what we were feeding my son every day for over 2 years was causing his excema.

We finally took a look at his diet and made some changes and for the first time in lmost 3 years, my son's "knee pits" and "elbow pits" are the same color as the rest of his body. He feels and acts so much better now that he's not so uncomfortable.

So many people think that its just a skin thing and have no idea that it can be an internal issue. It could completely be things that you are giving him. Is he formula fed? There might be something in the formula that he is allergic to. Is he breast fed? It might be something that you are eating that is not agreeing with him.

If you would like to talk more or want more information, I would be happy to share with you more of what we did.

I know this is late advice and I didn't read the others, so maybe redundant....my daughter has this too. Before totally giving up these food items...I know how hard that would be...try Aveeno oatmeal bath, I could only find it at Jewel. It comes in a box with I think 5 bath packets. Then follow up bath with the Aveeno cream...it says for eczema as well as other skin conditions. Also, at night I find the Aquaphor works really well. The oatmeal baths and cream did the trick for us and she was really bad, the Dr. actually prescribed steriod cream, but since our bath and cream routine, no need for the prescription.
Good Luck!

HI!
My son had eczema and we ended up at a dermatoligist which didn't really help. The hydrocortisone cream ended up helping to clear it up after I listened to my "gut" and figured out he had a sweet potato allergy. And sweet potatoes are also in some mixed veggies. You may need to figure out the allergy first and then work on clearing it up!

I would keep being pro active and use Aquaphor. Also, you should try a little hydrocortizone cream, too. Eczema is a form of allergy, so you might want to try to elimanate milk and dairy to see if it doesn't get better. Good luck. JD

my son developed the same problem at 2mos of age. I use Aveeno extra moisturizing lotion twice a day. If your breastfeeding...there may be certain things in your diet that are contributing. I found that things like chocolate, coffee, tea, and nuts make my son's eczema worse. As long as I stay away from these things...his skin is great with just lotion 1-2 times a day.

Good luck!

I've responded to this many times. My son as well ahd eczema. Didn't get much cooperation from docs. Vasoline makes it worse... so does any kind of oils. We tried everything.

Well: do some research you will find kids under 1 w/eczema are usually allergic (at least for now) to dairy.
We went to allergist at 6 mo.
Found out very allergic to eggs, moderate to dairy and soy. Not supposed to give little boys soy cuz the hormones.

Long story short,... i was nursing and gave up ALL dairy and dairy related, all eggs, all soy...
his skin was perfect after a few weeks.
His allergist and pediatrician were amazed.
He had it all over his body depending on what i ate that day.
Hard w/formula as ALL formula has soy or dairy, even that nutramigin stuff (ick!) has soy in it. Hope this helps.

I met a woman w/her boy similar issues, his eczema was horrible, bleeding etc. Her doc wouldn't lsiten to her either.
I talked to her about allergies. Wouldn't you know it. Along with steroid cream for him, his skin is also perfect now : )

and most kids outgrown the allergy,
mine unfortunately hasn't as of yet!
good luck!

I was told by my dermatologist to use Eucerine as well and it ended up that I was allergic to it! Try to find Vanicream it has less ingredients the Eucerine which means less things to be allergic to. If you can't find it talk to the pharmacy, they should be able to order it for you. I've also had great luck with products from The Body Shop (NOT Bath and Body Works), so much so that I sell it now. Let me know if you'd like some recommendations or would like to order.

Hi Tricia
Please do not use vaseline or anything that has mineral oil. Vaseline is pure petroleum. Petroleum and mineral oil are derivitives of crude oil, which have been refined and refined and refined again until it is what they call "cosmetic quality". Producers created a market for it because it is cheaper to sell it to cosmetic and skin care companies than to dispose of it according to hazardous waste standards. These dangerous ingredients are equivalent to wrapping our skin in plastic wrap. They retard the skins functioning, not allowing it to breathe, sweat or release toxins, which is our skins primary function. It is very occlusive to our skin. Please do your research. If you would like more information regarding this, please contact me. If you would like to see results with your sons eczema, try Arbonne's baby line. Highly recommended by alot of pediatricians and dermatologists. Arbonne's products are pure, safe, and beneficial. They are botonically based. Formulated without chemical dyes or fragrances. Formualted without mineral oils and animal products/by-products. They are hypo-allergenic. And dermatoligist tested. Please contact me if you would like to try Arbonne's baby line. I can send you samples. S. ###-###-####

I recently went to the doctor for my son's 5 mo. check up and she told me to use Eucerin cream. I had been using vaseline. I've been using the Eucerin cream for the past week and half and I've noticed a big difference. I put it on him twice a day and I have my babysitter also put in on him.

Hi my son ha eczema and what I do is use the baby aveeno bath with oatmeal wash and as soon as he is done taking a bath I pat dry him. Depending on how bad it is i'll put the hydrocortizone cream first where it's needed and immediately put on the aveeno body lotion. I use to use the eucerine but it was way to greasy i love the aveeno. If it's not that bad the I'll use the aveeno lotion only. I limit how many baths he gets in a weak. You might want to see what causes his eczema to flare up. I know my son is peanutbutter and how hot he gets, my cousins daughter flares up because she has dust allergies, and my other cousin her son because of dairy. It does take a little bit before the skin gets normal again. hang in there.

My son has eczema, and the doctor always had me use Eucerine for the day and Aquaphor in the evening. However recently my Mom's (who suffers from eczema) dermatologist suggested she use Vanicream (comes in a 1 lb tub - you have to ask pharmacist for it) I showed the container to my Pedatrician and he said it was safe to use and to give it a try - IT IS THE BEST!!! I started when my son had an outbreak (he would get it on his butt cheeks and thighs) within 2-3 days it was completely gone - WOW! I now use it on him daily - and it hasn't come back.
Good luck.

I do not have eczema, however, I recently had a discussion with my MIL who told me an interesting, if not unusual remedy: a banana peel. Rub the inside of the peel on the eczema and within days, you should see results.

I did a little research on the topic, and found this discussion online: http://www.eczemavoice.com/forum/messages/271/443.html?##...#

I hope this works!
