How to treat bloody and swelling bug bites?
After playing outside the last few days, my kids and I have gotten bites from some sort of insect, at the back of our neck, at our hairlines. The bites are bloody, and swell up, but don't hurt or itch. I haven't felt the bugs bite, nor have I seen them. Does anyone know what kind of bugs these are and how to prevent the bites? I am not a big fan of products that contain Deet. Also, is there something I should do to treat the bites? Thanks!!!

HI,
Sounds like some kind of sand fly or gnat bite.. The bites look way worse than they actually are. My kids have had them before, we used Avon stuff on then kids, it worked a bit but mostly we just resorted to keeping them covered. As for treating the bites, if they didn't bother them, we left them alone, if they did get swollen and itchy, we would give them some benadryl (topical or oral) and a baking soda bath helps to heal it up pretty quick. It doesn't sound like lice or ticks to me. I have a pretty vast knowledge of bugs as I live in Northern Ontario Canada aka bug central!!!

This organic bug spray is ranked #1 by the New England Journal of Medicine! Made from plant extracts like soybeans and geraniums, it's 100% safe and natural. Yet according to the USDA, it's just as effective as DEET. Repels mosquitoes, flies, and more. Non-toxic, waterproof, and long-lasting. Choose 6.7 fl. oz. Spray or handy Wipes.
As far as the bites you can rub them with crushed green onion leaves, or get some plantain or plantain oil. There's lots of products to relieve the itch. Your kids might just have the type of chemistry that attracts these creatures, or an allergic reaction. Good luck!

Deet is better than West Nile virus. If you don't want to use deet, cover your kids in clothing from head to toe so the bugs cannot penetrate. We used to do that when fishing or horseback riding to prevent fly bites that hurt.

Get screened for lice and ticks, either of them are a disease problem. If they are gnat bites, soap, water and time will take care of it. If you are itchy, topical benedryl, either the spray or cream will help a lot. For insect repellent that is low chemical, try Avon's Skin so Soft lotion. In a clinical trial it did better than a lot of commercial insect repellents without DEET. It is definitely a better option for little kids. Good Luck.

Look very carefully and make sure there are no ticks attached. Also, check for lice; they live at the hairline and on the head, but they also itch like crazy.
Make sure the bites are clean, then try some tea tree oil on them, or an antibiotic ointment if you feel they are getting infected.

I use lavender essential oil on bug bites and sun burn. It heals the itch/burn really quickly. Just make sure not to get it in the eyes. I also use it to deter bugs by mixing a bit in my hand, and then rubbing it on the neck and arms. Bugs really don't like it at all. Lavender is also great to treat those little burns with no scab. Hope that helps. You can get lavender at most health food stores, just make sure that it is pure with no other oils in it.

Hi! Im not a fan of products that contain deet, either, so I use Avon Bug Guard. It also contains a sunscreen of SPF 30. Just this weekend, I also found a bug spray called "Bull Frog" that is Deet free. As for treating the bug bites, you could try tea tree oil or there is also a cream called "After Bite" My daughter loves it and it really stops the itch or sting. Good Luck!!!

AVON has a bug repellant product that is deet free and works great. It is called Bug Gaurd. You can order directly from their website and have the products shipped to you or you can find a rep in your area... www.avon.com

I do not remember all the logistics of tick bites, but I would make sure you are not talking about a tick bite. And I would go to a doctor just for sanity, then decide what to do.
Good luck,
R.
