How to Seal Grout in New Home So It Won't Discolor - DIY or Professional?

Hi! I will be moving into a new house in Houston, zip 77040, soon. It has ceramic tile downstairs. I have a lot of ceramic tile in my present house, but the grout is discolored and makes the whole floor look bad. I'd like to avoid that in my new house by getting the grout sealed before we move in. I can spend a few hours on it myself if I knew what to do, but if necessary I can hire a professional to do it. Any suggestions on the initial treatment and how to keep it up once it's sealed? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I am not sure how many square feet you have to seal, but it is possible to apply yourself. I rolled it on..bought the stuff @ Home Depot. Relatively inexpensive, but you will need some knee pads and some patience! Good luck!

Go to Home Depot or Lowes. They have a product you can apply yourself.

Hi D.. I don't recall what it's called but there's a color sealant that can be put on the grout that should protect it from discoloring. I think it's kind of like "painting" the grout. When we moved into our new home 3 years ago I was mortified by the discoloring of our grout. It was suppose to match the grout on our back splash but was very noticeably different. I contacted the tile company and they came over and applied this product to the grout so it matched everywhere and it still looks the same today! I don't have to scrub it I just mop the tile using a vinegar/water solution. You might want to check with a tile company to find out about this product(or the internet)and to see if it would be worth it for you to pay someone to apply it. We have a lot of tile so I was glad that they did it for free because the house was new. Thank God! I hope this helps you out some. God bless!

My husband went to Lowes and bought some tile sealant and brush. He did everything himself and work just fine. You may want to consult the saleperson at Lowes and find out which product is best for your floor. Good luck!

Hi D., My husband and I sealed our grout by ourselves. My husband is a jack of all trades so he like to do things on his own. We bought the sealer at Home Depot and poured it into a kethup bottle, (you know the cheap ones you can buy at the dollar store for picnics) and just went along and sqeezed it on the grout to saturate it. It was easy but time consuming. If you have a lot of tile and four children it just might be worth the money and time to have someone do it for you. Good luck.
