How to handle itchy rash on a 5 years old? What causes it?

Hi moms. My son (5) woke this morning and at first I didn't notice (it's that mild), but he has a slight red rash on his forehead, behind ears, under chin. It's not anywhere else - he's not had a fever or illness. I put anti-itch cream on him (had no benedryl, of course!) and sent him to school, as he seemed fine. We are using the same soaps - he hasn't worn any new clothes the past few days and I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this recently. His cheeks seemed unaffected - it was a bit around his nose, but mostly on his forehead and neck area. The school was made aware, so if it's really bothering him or worsens, I know they will call. Just wanted to get some thoughts. The rash isn't really raised - has a bit of a prickly heat look to it, but not hive like. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Could be an allergy ? Has he had any new foods ? Does he have issues with dairy ? Dairy is a cause of rashes at times.

Have you heard of fifth's disease? This might be it. It sounds worse than it is, it is a virus that most people get when they are kids. The only concern with it is pregnant women shouldn't be exposed. So you may want to check with your doctor if your sons are around pregnant women. Like any virus it just has to run its course. Good luck!

I am a mother of two. My daughter is 4 and my son is 22 months. My daughter has had the same type of rash before and the ped. told us that it was a virus and that some viruses come out of the body through a rash. She, too, did not run a fever and the rash was not raised. It eventually went away. It took about a week to a week and half to clear up. Hers was all over her body. I was freaking out but we are all still kicking. Good luck! Hope this helps.

D.,
hi there I hope I can help.... do you have any pets??? if so he might have a flee on him I know that might sound strange but this can happen. Also don't put creams on him and if you do make sure the area is very dry before you put it on because some creams will make it spread. M. (mother of 3 grandmother of 2)

Hi D. - Skin allergies and sensitivities run in my family and I've found products available through Arbonne, that are pure, safe and beneficial and they can eliminate many of these problems. It might be the shampoo, or the soap you're using on his skin. Naturally, I'm a product of the product and I also sell these products. You can log on to the Arbonne website to see examples for yourself. If you decide to purchase any to try, you can e-mail me at ____@____.com

HI, Has he been out in the cold? Sometime my youngest get a small rash on his face when he's been outside when it;s really cold or windy. I have put diaper rash cream on it and it goes away. Good Luck

It may be Fifth's Disease. I don't know which school your kiddo goes to but I know Wea Ridge Elementary has had several children with this illness lately. (including my daughter) If it is fifth's disease and he has the rash now he is no longer contagious. It starts out with mild cold symptoms (runny nose, mild fever, sore throat, ect) then things seem to be back to normal and a few days later (~5-7) the child breaks out in a lacy-net like rash. One of the other charcteristics of it is bright red cheeks that look like they have been slapped. Fifth's disease is also called "slapped cheek" Your child's pediatrician should be able to diagnosis it. However it is a virus so antibiotics aren't going to help it. We just used benedryl and anti-itch ointment for our daughter. If it does turn out to be Fifth's disease the rash may stick around for 1-3 weeks. Hope that helps. Good luck.

It could be something as simple as dry skin. My daughter developed this ugly looking yellowish raised pathcy rash on her butt cheeks last winter. Turns out that this is the place on her body most sensitive to dryness. I recieved a prescription ointment for it. Keep an eye on it and check with your pediatricion to rule out anything that could be nasty.
