I use "Odo-Ban." I've always found it at Walmart. I've never tried it for urine but I used it when we had a house fire, I've used it on "pet smells" when we moved into a rental, on mold and mildew, musty and rotten smells. It's always worked wonderfully. It cost around $2.50 per bottle. I always keep it in the house because it's also an antibacterial cleaner, but doesn't damage cloth or wood. I use it all of the time and swear by it and Oxi Clean. If one won't do it, the other always does. You've gotten some great suggestions. I hope you find one that works for you.

Hi J.,
I can certainly relate to this problem. We have a "Bad Kitty" who likes to mark corners, but is 12 yrs old and part of the family. The best thing I have found is called "Emro Odor Eliminator". I have purchased it at Loveland Hader Hardware. Also, the distributor lives in Anderson and has a website. This product is suppossed to actually neutralize the urine-not just cover it up- thereby taking the odor away. Unless you have a really extensive problem (like urine soaking into the floorboards), it works pretty well. It also works on other odors and has a fresh scent. Hope this helps.

J.,

No, there's nothing that will take the smell out. When I moved into my house, the cat urine smell was horrible. After trying everything, I finally had to remove the carpet and padding (disgusting!) I sprayed all the urine spots on the wood subfloor with KILZ and that sealed it and stopped the smell. Anything on top is only superficial and will not work. You can spend a million dollars on pet odor enzyme stuff, but it doesn't work. You have to pull up the floor and KILZ it!

(If it's on baseboards, you will have to use KILZ and then paint the baseboards.)

Try Zorbx. You can find it at Target or any store like that.

J.,

I think Becky is right - it is really hard to get cat urine smell out of the house. We looked at a gorgeous house three times that we were seriously interested in, but it reaked of cat urine. We talked to several people that basically said it's probably gone thru the carpets and pad to the sub-floor. That requires like Becky said, pulling up the carpet, pad and sealing and/or sanding the floor down.

I too have heard that vinegar works, but really, it's such a hard smell to get rid of. My last house would occassionally smell of it on a rainy or humid day and the previous owners never had a cat - it was the owners before them. It just lingers for a really long time.

All the best of luck.
