How to get rid of bad diaper rash on infant?

My daughter is ten months old she is currently crawling and beginning to take steps. Last week she got a really bad diaper rash on her side. When we were at the doctor he said to just get her bigger diapers (she is about 17lbs wearing size 2 which goes to 18lbs). So I took his word for it and went out and got bigger diapers. Well the only things this seems to be doing is giving her a rash all over her back and on the sides of her upper legs, not to mention the mess it is leaving because the diapers are WAY TOO BIG!! My question is does anyone know how to get rid of a bad diaper rash? I have two types of cream- one is a store brand and the other is Balmex. Please help I feel so bad my daughter gets so upset when we go to change her now~!

Thank you everyone who has left messages already. Many of you said that I should try a new brand of diapers. My question then is... We have always used huggies from the day she was born, can she just one day become allergic?

What can I do next?

Summary

Use a protective barrier cream or ointment on the area after each diaper change. Check the diaper frequently, and change it when wet. Use a gentle perfume-free soap or even just plain water when cleaning the area. Make sure the diaper area is quite dry before putting on a fresh diaper. Let your baby's bottom free of diaper for 20-30 minutes, if rash persists consult your pediatrician.

You might also want to try changing the brand of diapers. My daughter started to develop a reaction to the brand so I had to change but corn starch is also good on rashes. Also it could be the soap or detergant you are using also. Good luck!

Have you tried Aveeno Oatmeal baths and their rash cream? Also, allowing the air to hit her bare bottom will help. My sister's little girl had the same problem, and she switched brands as well. And to answer the question about the allergies, it's not something overnight, but perhaps it started out small being treated with Balmex but developed over time. If she is moving around, there may be something in Huggies that doesn't agree with her when she sweats.

My daughter had a really bad diaper rash once, and the doctor had me mix Maalox-(regular minty)with aquaphor (in the lotion area of many stores-it has a blue top), and make it into a paste, and rub it on her rash.. i actually always have a tupperware of it on me at all times!! Its amazing!!

Please let me know if you have any questions about it!

i don't know how many responses you've gotten already, but my son forced me to be well educated on diaper rash. if it's really bad, obviously let it air dry. then use lotrimin cream and top it off with either desitin, butt paste or triple paste (sold behind the counter at the pharmacy). this technique has worked like a charm every time-better than the prescription diaper rash creams!

Hello C.!

Well from past expriences (I am a mother of 3) my kids were all allergic to Huggies for some reason. I started using Pampers brand and also used Publix brand and never again had a problem with diapers rashes.

I hope that your daughter gets better.

My son also dealt with major diaper rashes. His stomach was not digesting the food properly and it would cause acidic burns and open sores on his bottom. I've tried every cream out there. The thing that seems to work best is cornstarch. I really wish I would have found out about cornstarch much sooner as it works great for him.

Good luck!!!

Hi C.,

I would suggest to let her spend a few minutes diaperless when you have the opportunity to just let her air out a little. Also, cornstarch works well to avoid moisture.

My son gets really bad diaper rash when he's teething and sometimes gets heat rash around that area just because it's so hot and humid out...and both of those are rather unavoidable and clear up eventually. Hope some of this helps!

Have you tried changing the brand of diaper. My daughter could only wear Huggies, I know they are more expensive but if she wore any other kind of diaper she would break out. Also there is a cream called Butt Paste I know the name is aweful but it really works. Plus bath her in oatmeal baths before bed I believe it is Aveeno that puts it out it is in the regular bath isle they are packets it really helps soothe the rash at night. Also just let her run around the house without a diaper they love it and the air really help clear them up quick. Plus make sure when she has the rash that you change the diaper as soon as she is wet. For a price helper on the Huggies I wrote to Huggies the address is on the package and explained to them that my daughter could only wear Huggies and I was a single mom and finances were tight and they sent me all sorts of coupons. Hope this helps

Put the Balmex on your daughtrer's behind. Do not rubit all the way in. I leave a coat of Bakmex on my daughter's behind when she gets it and within 24 hours she is better.

That happened to my daughter too and a nurse told us to use Lotrimin (anti itch) cream. Let me tell you, it works wonders!! I put it on once and by next diaper change the rash was dramatically improved and gone by next day. Hope this helps.

My children are grown now but I found Balmex to be the best. Have you thought about changing diaper brand. Maybe something in the diapers you are using is giving her the rash. I would also give her some "air time" time without a diaper on to get air on her skin. It will take a few days to clear this up. If it doesnt clear up soon Go back to her pediatrician as it could also be yeast and she may need some nystatin cream to clear it up. Hope her little bottom gets better soon.
