How Short Is Too Short? Short Question

Little background: I made the commitment to myself about a year ago that I was no longer going to be the "fat mom", and 6 months ago went all in and have changed my lifestyle to focus on health and fitness. Well it paid off as I have lost 65lbs so far. I am 28, 5'4 and now down to 163lbs. Well I am going to Mexico in 2 weeks and have been getting packages delivered non stop of clothing. Well I ordered a lot of clothing out of Jr. dept and a lot of the shorts are about 3" long. So I decided what the heck let's try them out. So I modeled them for a couple girlfriends and my husband and was told by them that they look fine, not to to short, I did the bend over check and had my husband make sure they didnt ride up my butt and to reassure me that there were no stretch marks or cellulite popping out of my inner thigh.... is that TMI?!! I was really proud of myself for being able to fit into these clothes again and not have to shop in the plus section, and I thought I looked good and all the cardio and weights paid off until.........

I babysit for a mutual friend and over the years we have become somewhat kinda close, we hang out in a group, but never alone, we don't call each other etc. Well she came by today to get her son and I had all my outfits laid out on the kitchen table. So she kinda started snooping, so I was showing her the outfits and all that came out of her mouth consisted of: "WOW those are too short" " Your really going to wear that" "I don't like that color" "Why not check womens they have longer shorts" and last but not least "Why are you spending so much money just for a weeks vacation?"

GRRRRRRRR So I laughd it off, explained just because we are moms doesnt mean our fashion sense has to die (She is 27 and dresses like shes 40, not to be mean, and I have never cut her down), That I had an addition 30% off and spent about $300 for all my clothes also hitting up 80% off racks and have 6 swimsuits!!.. Then it hit me, why in the hell am I justifying myself?! So I stopped and changed the subject and we left it at that

So how short is too short for shorts? Is she right that I am dresseing inappropriate? I am still very insecure of my body and was not trying to dress like a tramp, or diva. I want to feel good about myself, and the reaction on my husbands face and the compliments on how I looked I thought were enough, but I am just so bothered. And now I'm thinking so When it get's nice out and I want to throw a pair of these shorts and a T on, is she going to be offended for dressing in "too short" of shorts while I run my daycare?
My gf says shes just jelous and to not let her snide remarks get the best of me, but this happend a couple days ago and I am still bothered!
Also how would you handle these comments? She is always nit picking and cutting down others around her and has weight issues of her own, so I don't want to to mean and hurt her feelings, even though she does it to me.

What can I do next?

Ok not read the other answers but personally I have never went more than 5-6 inches above the middle of the knee cap (Im 28 and have kids) I feel there is a line where you can have to short, I was 120 in high school and am now goin between 160-180 on a 5'4" frame, and even younger I never really felt comfy that far above my knees, to each their own tho so what ever you feel comfortable in. I also look at things like that as girls look up to their moms and other women and I wouldnt wear anything I wouldnt want my daughter in at any age, if that helps.

As a guy, you know what I like women to wear?

The things that make them feel confident.

Three inch shorts look fantastic on someone that feels the shorts compliment her.

Three inch shorts look hilarious when the woman is self concious about them.

Reading your post - you are OVERFLOWING with confidence in your new self! Get out there and have fun. Let your girlfriend be jealous - but don't give her free rent in your head! She's not spending the day wondering if what she said was hurtful - why should you? :)

Personally, I like to follow the fingertip rule, stand up straight - place your arms at your sides and if the hem touches your middle finger's tip then you are fine. I find that there is SOME wiggle room on that but overall, I do not think grown women should shop in the jr section no matter your size. I have found some super cute clothes in the jr plus section before, but again - it's meant for teens. I agree that you do not have to dress older than your age, but you should at least shop in your age group's department.

Your "friend" is jealous. No doubt about it. Having said that however I do believe that most of the clothes in the jr dept. are made for juniors. I am 5'7" and now weigh 129lbs (Just lost 11.5 lbs in the last 7 weeks) I know I can't pull off the short shorts. I don't mean to burst your bubble because I think you are doing an awesome job but just because something "fits" does not mean you should necessarily wear it. I guess I think if you needed to ask that many people if it looked good you must be having some doubts.
I shop in the "misses" section and think I wear really cute stylish clothes.
Have a great time on your vacation and I like to have a different bathing suit for everyday of the vacation too:).

So here is my theory - You have worked hard to get where you are and if you are comfortable and your hubby thinks they look good that is all that matters. I have friends that think since we have kids that we can no longer wear shorts or bikini's or anything for that matter. I am almost 41 years old 5'2" and 112lbs I refuse to buy 1 piece swim suits and I refuse to wear "walking" shorts. I will wear my short cut offs and my bikini top you know why? because I still can! Congratulations on your hard work and you should celebrate your new self!!

Shorts from the juniors department would be too short for me. I'm 5'4" and I weigh about 145 (size 10). My hips and thighs are the biggest parts of me, though, so it's very possible that 3" shorts would look different on me than they would on you. And different people have different comfort levels. I've never been comfortable in a bikini, even when I weighed 125. I was so excited when tankinis came out, and now at age 37 I wear a bathing suit with a little skirt. That's just my level of modesty.

Even with my more modest take on fashion, I say wear your short shorts and be proud of what you've accomplished. If your husband thinks you look good (and you trust his judgement), and your other friends think you look good - then they're not too short for you. Don't let your insecurity take over. The people who love you and care about you say you look good, and you KNOW you look good. Don't let one negative Nancy get you down.

Have fun in Mexico!!

Ya know....I myself think short shorts only look good on young girls. You may not feel comfortable in them. I would say stick with capris...cropped pants, cute top, cute sandals, or some pretty skirts with a t-shirt or tank top. I am also a big fan of comfy pants...yoga capri pants are great...and comfortable....I am way older 43...5'5" and 150 Ibs. I quite wearing shorts about 12 years ago....If your legs are nice and slim and tan...go for it....
I would rather have a friend who is honest with me vs. a friend who tells me what they think I want to hear......Your husband is not going to tell you something dosen't look good for fear of you getting upset
I also think 28 is a little too old to be shopping in the Junior section. tops maybe....bottoms...no...a great place to look for cool trendy clothes T.J. Maxx and Marshall's....you can always find great deals....

Without a picture, it would be hard to say if they were "too short". You have lost a lot of weight but you are probably like a size 12 or 14 still, right? Juniors shorts are generally pretty short but if you think you look good, especially with heels on, the go for it. I don't know your financial situation but honestly, I think 300 is way too much for a vacation, even if you do plan to wear the clothes all summer. You deserve to treat yourself to some new clothes that make you feel good and definetly some nice bathing suits. But 6??

I say do the fingertip rule. Put your hands down at your sides and shorts shouldn't be above your fingertips. (on me, that's like mid thigh). I also just lost 55 lbs, I'm 29, 5'2", and 117lbs. Personally, i don't feel comfortable in junior's shorts - usually too short for my taste. (women's sizes don't work either - so shorts don't happen often). If you have the confidence to wear them - then go for it. When looking in the mirror - really look at them and try not to let the size of them bias you too much ;-) If you think they look good and it has the seal of approval from all your friends - then why not. Remember, the friend didn't see you wear them, just laid out. They make look different on than what she imagined.

If it looks good and you're comfortable, that's what matters, right?

I have to say, when I think "junior" clothing, I think cheap and trendy....
So I would be more aware of the quality and tastefulness of the items than the length.

And, as a mom, I want my "play clothes" (heck--really--ALL clothes for me) to be functional--I don't want to be tugging down short shorts while I'm climbing the ladder on the playground!

Well, I've just started my weight loss journey, so CONGRATS for doing so well!! We are the same height, and I started at 165...my goal is to get back to 130 or so. Before I had children, I was so petite...like, 110...so I know what it's like to be bigger than you "feel" inside.

Don't care what your "friend" says...(she sounds like my mom!)

Just a bit of advice on the shorts. Vacation, etc, is one thing, but if you are running a daycare...don't put on three inch shorts for daycare!!! (I say this while giggling because I'm wondering if you were kidding when you say that.) I mean, there's a time and a place for everything, including more moderate dress...I'd reserve the capris or something for running the daycare. That's just my own personal opinion as a very modest mom (I don't wear shorts.) I'm all in favor of it off the clock, thought!

Good for you!! :)

We are very close to the same size (I'm 5'5", 155) but I am 43.
I have some 3" inseam shorts that are cute and flattering, but I only wear them to the beach or pool. Partly because of my age (that's just my personal choice) but mostly because I am super white and starting to get varicose veins :(
At your age, and if you are in good shape, I say go for it, especially on vacation, whoo hoo!!!

Congrats on your weight loss!

I guess it really depends on how they look on you, how you are built and how you feel. I'm a little taller than you (and a lot heavier now) and when I was your weight, I wouldn't have worn shorts that short but that's because I carry all of my weight in my hips and thighs. But I have friends who even at similar weights had decent legs and could pull off shorter shorts and they looked great. So really, it all depends on how they actually look and it sounds like you already got some opinions by people you trust. If you can trust them to be honest with you (my husband and girlfriends pull no punches) then they probably look great!

In addition...you're going on vacation so who cares anyway - you're not going to see anyone you know so wear them and have fun. If after a week a away you feel like you've been tugging at them or they're just not comfy, get other styles before summer.

I do not blame you feeling this way at all, any type of negative comment like that would be bothersome to anyone.
Firstly though, CONGRATULATIONS. Not many people can do what you have done and keep it off, so BRAVO!!!
Your instinct was correct, when you were talking to that girl. You do not have to validate or justify yourself. If your husband likes them , then that should be enough. She is more than likely jealous and was just making those remarks to purposely make you uncomfortable.
As long as those jeans fit and you like them and so does your hubby then you are good. I am 27 years old and I wear short shorts, as long as you dont have a butt cheek hanging out or fat bulging then you are good. I get compliments all the time and even moms who dress "conservatively" ask me where I get my clothes and I tell them and next thing you know they are wearing them . Sounds like that lady thought " I could never take that risk and neither should she". You wear those outfits, tall and proud.

It sounds to me that what she said bothers you because some of your thoughts tell you similar things. You know, those sneaky lingering doubts that we all do our best to shout down in our stronger moments. That doesn't mean the negative thoughts are necessarily true, but something inside you believes that they could be.

You did the Booty Check and passed – by a husband who wants you to look good but not immodest or cheap. Acknowledge that those doubts linger, consider them carefully to be sure there's no truth in them, and make your grown-up choices.

I think almost all of us really do know what's right and acceptable. And different situations do call for different levels of modesty – I would think in your professional role, you might want to dress a bit more conservatively. You are setting an example for the young girls you care for, so of course their mothers will have an interest. It's different if it's a weekend or a vacation and you're strictly on your own time.

Oh, congratulations on your great success!

I don't know about the junior department. But your husband approves of your purchases. If you really need any more corroboration, ask your best, most sympathetic friend. Then that decision is made.

Be careful whom you listen to. Plenty of people have something to say, but plenty of people are ruled by their envy. They make themselves feel bigger by making other people feel smaller. With some folks, the only taste of success they will get is taking a bite out of YOU.

I wouldn't worry too much. I have some pretty short shorts and on vacation they are perfect. I do think though that the key is to make sure you are dressing for the situation...vacation deserves some short shorts and tank-tops...volunteering in your kid's classroom, well maybe not. Also, pair your short shorts with tops that are more "grown up" if you are feeling like you look too young. Flip flops are fine, but if you're going to lunch or something maybe throw on some sassier shoes.

It does not sound like your outfit choices are trampy ;) so don't fret and have a super awesome vacation!!!

Everyone has their own taste and limits when it comes to these questions. I don't think it's a question of being a mom and having to dress frumpy, it's a question of modesty, comfort and feeling good about yourself.

Personally I would never wear very short shorts or skirts. I would constantly be worries my underwear would be peaking out or worse someone would catch a glimpse of my privates when I sit down or run after my DD. And I do have to admit when this happens to someone else ... as in me catching a peak up another woman's skirt or short... I do something think OMG - what was she thinking.

That said if you are happy with your outfits go ahead and enjoy them.

I am in great shape... and I'm only 5'... but those would still be too short for me. I dress cute and fashionably, but I still tend to go for more modest pieces for personal reasons.

I do think that length is inappropriate for work or around kids. But on vacation, do what feels comfortable.

BUT... this friend is constantly nitpicking other people, and what she said to you was just rude. I would totally discount what she says. Next time she goes on a rampage on your or anyone else, I would just politely say, "What is your issue, is there a reason you have to consistently find fault with everyone?"

I'm 42, with nice legs (always have been my best asset) and I no longer wear shorter shorts, simply because my age is showing (saggy knees + veins) and it just doesn't seem right anymore.

Regardless of the exchange with your friend, a good way to gauge if your shorts, or any other bit of clothing is too short, too revealing, too sexy, or just plain unflattering, is to have someone take a bunch of photos of you in the outfit, standing, sitting, pushing a stroller, bent over to tie your shoe, sipping a cup of coffee, wiping a kid's nose, getting crackers out of a box (candid shots in basically in all sorts of different scenarios). Then crop your head (or just cover it with your hand), and take a hard look at the picture. See if you feel comfortable with the way that body looks in those clothes. It will give you the objectivity you are after.

I stand 5'1" tall, and weigh 125. My thighs look good when standing or sitting, but tend to go bumpy when walking. Something I noticed at first on other people, and realized I had myself, after the candid photos. Hasn't influenced my choice in shorts (I happen to prefer capris, or clamdiggers), but at least I am fully aware of what I am putting out for the world to see, if I go for a shorter short or hem.

Good luck to you and yours,
F. B.

she is a girl out to get you!! Just remember the look on your hubbys face when you put the clothes on, and remember only that, and your new found self esteem!!! Forget about her. You have worked really hard at this, and you are at a point that you feel good in them, and you have the opinions of 2 people that mean a lot to you, so go with that. Forget about her, she is probably just jealous anyway. Have fun on your trip!!!

I think you judged it right. If you bend over and your rear is hanging out. it's too short. You should not have to justify your clothing choices to her. If you feel good in it wear it.

You did something she didn't you lost weight and got some new clothes that go with the new you. Don't let her comments tear down how you feel about you.

As you said you are 28 and not 40. Heck I am older and I don't wear those old folks clothes. Dress the body you have and be happy. If it didn't look right your husband would be the first to tell you. Besides that the clothes are for a whole season not for just two weeks and you do do childcare at your home.

Let it go. Life's too short to worry about what she says.

The other S.

PS Enjoy your trip.

I personally think if you are in dance or at the gym that short shorts have no place. If you are a tourist and don't want to pick up gross stuff on your legs from every seat you sit on I would go get some longer shorts. Plus think about sitting on hot cement. You are not going to be very comfortable wearing short shorts.

Showing off a new figure is fine, and there is plenty of time for that. Where you are going to be in air conditioning and where if you sit down you won't get blisters.

We sell a plain 5" short and it sells very well. They are Basic Moves and they fit like bike shorts. They are stretchy and very comfortable. I would like a short to walk around in and do stuff in to actually cover more of the inner thigh so my legs don't rub when I start sweating too.

I just think a bit longer short would be more comfortable FOR ME. I remember when I weighed about the same as that. I was wearing about a size 14-16. I like my clothes loose and comfortable. I wore tighter knit shorts for the ability to move comfortably, I wore skirts with bike shorts underneath so that my legs would not rub and I could take the skirt off if I wanted to to change the look a bit, and I wore dresses that had slender straps and fit with a loose empire waist. This way air circulated all over my skin and I was never too hot.

Since I am not you nor do I know you I think if you are comfortable in them then that is all that counts.

Sounds like you might have a jealous friend.

As long as you are comfortable and even got some advice from your hubby and BFF - you are good to go.

Enjoy your trip and congrats on the weight loss.

You are 5' 4" tall... you have short legs. Your friend cannot comment on whether the shorts are too short when she has not even seen them on your body. She threw alot of negative stuff at you... It sounds to me like a bit of jealousy.

I am your same height and the weight you were before. In my opinion you should be VERY proud of yourself! Good for you! Have a wonderful time on your vacation. Do not give another thought to your firends negative comments!

For modesty's sake, I prefer much longer shorts. It's very hard for men to look at women respectfully when their eyes are drawn to a lot of revealed skin, and I don't want to put that kind of temptation in front of them. It's not that I'm young & attractive, because I'm neither--except in my husband's opinion (the sweetheart!). Men are designed for visual stimulation, so even bare skin on an older & less attractive woman can be a temptation to impure thoughts.

Having said that, I would NEVER presume to judge another woman's choices on her clothing. I would make whatever positive comments I could make, if asked my opinion, referencing the colors, patterns, styles, etc. If it were one of my daughters, that would be different, of course! IF I said anything about my objections at all, it would be something casual, like maybe, "How cute! They're a little shorter than I would wear, but I really like this color for you."

Notice that, unless I had no objections at all, I would not even volunteer an opinion, but only if I were asked for one.

Try not to let this woman's criticisms get to you. Know that she has problems that must affect her own contentment with life and pray for her to be less judgmental.

Too short for her doesn't mean to short for everyone. Just because she likes bermuda shorts doesn't mean everyone likes bermuda shorts.

3" on ME are daisy dukes (I'm almost a foot taller than you). I would guess that 3" on you, is about 5" on me. Which are long enough not to show panties no matter how cirque du soleil I twist myself into). So there's ALSO the body size thing to take into account. One of my BFs is 5'2. Her clothes, laid out, in my mind are showing my bum! Shorter than swimsuit. But when she puts them on, are the same place I wear my own clothes! So do take into account they were laying on a table, and she was putting her own self into those clothes in her mind. ((So, too, does extra weight. The wider you are, the longer the inseam needs to be, because it has to cross your vajayjay, inner thigh, and bum before it starts going down)). Size matters!!!

You had a ton of people tell you they're fine, and 1 person say they're not. Go with the majority and don't stress about the bermuda-shorts-gal.

I think you handled her comments correctly. You gave just enough explanation without being rude. On the surface it sounds like she was nitting to nit and also trying to cut you down to make herself feel better. I wouldn't worry about it and I would stop myself from wasting any more energy on this woman’s snide remarks. In my mind the people (you and your husband namely) whose opinions matter the most have already weighed in so the subject would be closed for me. Since you say she is always like this, then maybe it is time to distance yourself from her. She doesn’t sound like much of a friend if she belittles you to make herself feel better. Regardless you should never stoop to her level. If it makes you feel crummy, why would you treat someone else that way? Two wrongs don’t make a right. Well done with getting your health on track and enjoy your upcoming vacation.

She's so green, if she were walking in a forest you wouldn't see her. Enjoy yourself. She's more of an acquaintance than a friend. I wouldn't spend any more time with her than I had to. I don't know how to cut someone like that off, but try to let go of it and enjoy yourself.

I agree, she is jealous. Put on those shorts and rock it mama!! I wear short shorts because I CAN and you can too now that you have done an AMAZING job accomplishing a very difficult goal. I am a size 3 in juniors and know that because that is the ONLY place I shop... misses sizes are too big and besides that they look OLD to me! I am 30 years old and there are plenty of items in the juniors section that do not look like teenage clothes, particularly the Candies line at Kohls. So I completely disagree with moms who say that juniors clothes are only for teenagers. Kudos to you and tell that frumpy mom to mind her own damn business! :)

If you feel comfortable in them don't worry about what she says. Shorts look different on different people depending on how long their legs are. To me as long as your cheeks are not hanging out when you bend over you are good. You are an adult!!! Like you said she is probbaly jealous!

Have a blast on your vacation and God Bless!

I think you already said it yourself. She dresses in your opinion like she's 40. you aren't going to see eye to eye with her when you are buying out of the juniors department that is intended for teenagers. That's not her sensibility and her's is not yours. So who cares what she says!

Secondly, what is too short in my opinion shows off things that ought not be seen. I don't want to see your whoo haa or your butt cheeks. Everything else I don't care. Sure if I see cellulite or something of that sort I'm icked out I'll admit but otherwise I always think the women looks great!

So wear what you are comfortable with and don't take advice from someone whose fashion sensibility you don't like in the first place.
