How Often Do You Mop Your Kitchen Floor?

I need some level headed opinions here! Hubby and I are "disagreeing" (playfully) about how often one should mop/clean the kitchen floor. I just walked in there and STUCK to the floor in one spot! lol

We (I) mop ours (embarrassingly) once every two weeks (with a quick job with the broom or dust buster about every three days). I will run the swiffer over the floor more often if I am having company over or if the floor just gets to me. I just simply don't have time for more! Hubby thinks it should be done about once a year. He is serious

How often do you mop/clean your kitchen floor? BE HONEST!!

What can I do next?

Sigh, I vacuum about once a day, the kitchen family room and hallway Everyday and then I have a schedule for rest of the rooms. I feel SO guilty because I don't mop often at all. I'm too embarrassed (let alone remember when ;-) to say. In my defense, when out tile was put in the grout wasn't sealed (even though I asked if it should be). So even though the tile was nice, the workmanship of putting it in was great it, in my mind it looks like (you know what) now because of the grout. IF I had known it needed it right away I would have sealed it myself but was told not to worry about it by the installer. I've tried cleaning and sealing myself but the staining was too much and already set. What really needs to happen is the grout needs to be redone but around here that is a lot of dollars or a tremendous amount of work. So I live with it. In order to do that I can't stand looking at as long as it takes to mop so have be in the right frame of mind to do so. Wow, who knew this could be such an emotinally charged question?!? Aren't you glad you asked me? ;-).

Honestly, not as often as I should! Maybe once every few months. I vacuum it regularly but we do have a dog whom I've nicknamed "Hoover." She pretty much keeps all food and crumbs off the floor.
I do "spot clean" all the time. I see a spot and clean it with a rag and then also clean whatever is in my reach while I'm down there.

We have to be honest?

Okay, well, anyone who walked in my house at any time would think it was clean. However, I'm not one for floor mopping, I have to admit. I have dark wood floors, in crappy shape, and they don't look any different if they're just mopped or not. So, I don't mop much. I do have a lot of rugs, and I vacuum them frequently.

Do I really have to be honest? Four times a year? We're a shoes off family, if that helps. Yikes, I hate being honest, it sounds so dirty. My house really does look clean, I swear, and is clean, in the important areas. And well-decorated. But why spend a lot of time mopping when it doesn't make a darn bit of difference.

I sweep mine about every other day, wipe up messes with disinfectant spray or antibacterial wipes when needed.... Actually, truly, like Pine-Sol mop? Umm... Haha... When we have guests over! So, not as often as you do!!! :-)

**Just an edit to add that I mop my BATHROOM floor once a week. It's probably a mental thing, but it makes my skin crawl to think my bathroom floor is dirty with bathroom germs - haha.

I probably mop every 2 weeks too. I will sweep almost every day, in fact if I don't sweep you can really see the difference. Mopping isn't that hard, but there's just something about it that seems so laborious!

I used to vacuum and mop once a week when I was a stay at home mom. Now I'm lucky if I mop/vacuum twice a month. I spot clean but I miss the days my house felt cleaner. I work part time and when I come home I start dinner and laundry. I need to get back on track and mop at least 4 times a month and vacuum more. My kids like to use the swiffer wet jet and dry so that too counts as spot cleaning.

Once a week now that I have my new Eureka envirosteamer. :))

Before that... ehhh... every few months, maybe. But I do sweep a few times a day (depending on the day... we have a dog and fluff balls accumulate in the corners easily, plus the grass clippings that come in on shoes, etc) and I spot clean with a hot damp paper towel for spills or anything that I step on that my foot sticks to, lol. Which is hard to tell sometimes... b/c the dog drips water from her bowl all the way across the kitchen!!! And that always feels "sticky" until the drips dry.
Sponge mops didn't work, they just tore up and had to constantly be replaced b/c of the edges of the tiles. Regular mops just seemed like it slopped the mess around and I couldn't really SCRUB. The only way it felt clean was hands and knees... and it is a BIG kitchen with a 5 ft island in the middle and I would just put it off and put it off and put it off...
Now, with my steamer... it takes about 10 minutes... start to finish. And it is SANITIZED TOO. :))
Best thing I ever bought!~

Seriously it should be mopped once a week. I usually mop mine once a month. I do wet swiffer it a time or two inbetween but it really doesnt do what a good ol' string mop does. I love walking barefoot on the clean kitchen floor, your feet definitely let you know when its time to mop again. If the bottom of your paws are black you have a problem :)

I vacuum when the dust bunnies are as big as the dogs, so about every 2-3 days. I wet swiffer once a week if the weather has been gross and we're tracking all kinds of wet and mud through the house, or once every two weeks if the weather's been good. And I bust out an actual mop and bucket probably once every two months. Once every 6-8 months the floor gets a serious on my hands and knees with the scrubbrush scrubbing.

About once a year. Really. Maybe not that often. It's wood, I vaccuum once a week. When my foot sticks to a spot, I get out a wet rag and wipe that spot and leave the rest. It's a "character" grade wood floor with lots of knots and dark spots so what I can't see, I can ignore!

I swiffer maybe once a week. Our kitchen is not too big so it is easier to keep it clean.

1 mom found this helpful

Every other Saturday! I sweep and/or dustbuster in between.

1 mom found this helpful

Hardly ever. It's so small I just sweep and then spot clean it.

1 mom found this helpful

I "plan" to do it weekly and before getting pregs I was doing great at it. Now once every two or sometimes three(eek!!) weeks. I sweep all the time and spot check it as well. I really think once a week is good and more than that is even better! I am so getting a steam mop soon, I love the idea of a disinfected floor with no chemicals. I think once a year may have happened here in the past!!!! But I think that is not a good thing!!

i mop twice a day. sounds outrageous right, but its true. I wish i could mop once a week or once every two weeks but that isn't happening here. I have no idea why it gets so messy so quickly but i can't stand mess. every morning before i let my son play i mop, bc he puts everything in his mouth and is just picking up stuff...and again during the day, So sweeping and mopping is twice a day or at least once a day for me.

I sweep the floor at least once a day and mop it about 2 times a week.

I aim for every week, but on a bad stretch, we will go about 3 weeks and then crunch-chrunck, stick-stick. I wish I could do it every monring.

I try and Swiffer my kitchen floor every day. I give it a good washing once a week.

Tell hubby - NOT ONLY NO BUT HECK NO!! YUCK! YUCK! AND TRIPLE YUCK!!!! I couldn't cook in a kitchen with a nasty floor - urgh!! the smell of grease, old food - not to mention the chance of cock roaches, mice and any other type of disgusting insect. NO THANK YOU!!!

Tell him to hire you a cleaner to come to the house once a week - YOU DESERVE IT!!!

We have lived in our house for 3 1/2 years, and I will honestly say that I have mopped it about 5 times. It is quite literally about 8 feet by 5 feet. I just sweep, unless I spill something, and then I clean that area I spilled on. I did, however, make my husband clean the floor on his hands and knees right before the baby was born. :)

Well, it's just me and my daughter (half time) so...I sweep when I feel stuff there, and wipe up sticky spots as soon as I notice, and give it a full mop...not very often...maybe every few months....

1 mom found this helpful

Thank you so much for asking this. I have felt horrible about how often i mop. I only did it once every couple of months whenmy first ds came along. Then number two came and i would never mop except hubby has taken pity on me or gotten sick of sticking to the floor and weve budgeted money for a housecleaner. So now ever two weeks. I sweep every day though.

I sweep up crumbs a lot by hand. If its more widespread, I grab the swiffer. If I stick to the floor, I mop. I usually mop every 1 - 1 1/2 weeks. I could just imagine my floor (with my drippy, messy kids) if I only mopped once a year!

Daily, if I'm home (aka if I have somewhere to be first thing, I skip that day, but the days I have somewhere to be NO ONE is home).

Boys & Dogs & Homeschooling (meaning we're home a lot more than most people) & Cooking Adventures & it's our main entry into the house.

I do a short list of things in the morning before I take a shower.
- pee & brush my teeth
- Caffeine & Computer & wake up
- Dustmop the downstairs
- Wash the kitchen floor & sometimes the living room floor
- Start a load of laundry
- Cook Brunch
- Clean the counters & the dining room table
Take A Shower

My mum washes her kitchen floor for major holidays. I've found as an adult I EITHER do things just like she did or the polar opposite. The floors are one of the opposite things.

So are toilets. The toilet gets cleaned daily. Again. Boys.

i have one, short haired dog - not a lot of shedding - a lot of crumb consumption! i don't mop often. if something sticky gets on the floor or if i am expecting company. maybe once a month or so? less?

1 mom found this helpful

Generally, when it gets to a point where it disgusts me, or if my MIL is coming over and it doesn't look recently mopped. It generally comes out to about once every month or two.

If you want it done every other week, there's nothing wrong with that. But don't feel guilty if you don't get to it more often. And don't expect hubby to do it as often as you want it done :)

Dust buster under table everyday (by my 3 year old), Swiffer every 3 days or so, Swiffer mop with Mr. Clean spray once a week.

I'm embarrassed to say hardly ever! But I have a slate floor so it's like living on the patio. It does get swept about once a week, but mopped? Maybe 4 times a year. If I still had little ones crawling around I'm sure I'd be cleaning it a lot more :)

1 mom found this helpful

Once a year? We have a no shoes in the house policy and you would not believe how dirty the floors get even with us taking our shoes off. Do you walk around your house in shoes? If so, I'd say wash the floor every day! I like washing my floors once a week. But I'm 36 1/2 weeks pregnant now and washing the floor is really hard on me so it's been a while since I last washed the floors. Just today my hubby surprised me while I was out grocery shopping and I came home to clean floors! He and our three children scrubbed the floors and rinsed them clean. What a wonderful surprise to come home to.

Well, I try to at least once a week, sometimes it runs a little longer. Definitely have to sweep a few times a day!

We have three dogs, one of whom is a border collie mix, so he sheds a lot. We also have five cats who all shed. So we sweep every other day. Mopping gets done about once a week, more if there's a spill.

I sweep pretty much everyday & mop 2x's a wk. I have a 9 mth old though & can't stand him crawling on funk. Otherwise I'd just mop as needed. About once a wk. ONCE a yr???? Ummmm....no comment!!!! ;o)

I used to be super-meticulous and do it everyday, the whole house. (wood floors throughout) But this past winter I have mellowed out to once a week. I will probably go back to everyday when the summer starts. It really helps with allergies.

I mop my floors twice a week and I sweep daily. With two boys and two dogs if I didn't my floors would be nasty.

Wood floors - dust mop every 2 days. "mop" once a week, but honestly, when I had a white floor and could see how dirty floors get, it should be done avery other day.....just because you can't see (or feel) it, doesn't mean it's clean.

However......I have found that if I sweep then use a spray bottle instead of a bucket, it comes very clean and it is so easy. Try the spray bottle with one of those "mops" that has a removable and washable cover...remember to wash the cover regularly though. A clean kitchen floor is a joy and it only takes about 8 minutes, if that.

I mop once a week and sweep about 2-3 times depending home dirty it feels and if i can see dirt or grim on the floor.

I sweep almost daily in my kitchem, I hate to walk on crunchy crumbs. Mop about 1X/wk.

I mop once a week. During the couple of years I was a SAHM, I did it twice a week - back then, we had white ceramic tile in the kitchen and it ALWAYS looked dirty, even an hour after I'd mopped it.

I do a quick sweep of the floor every day after doing the dinner dishes. It's such a habit I don't even think about it anymore.

I do a good sweeping and mopping once a week (usually on friday) with the bucket, soap and water. But during the week if something gets spilled or it just needs refreshing I have no problem dragging out the mop and "damp mopping" it. Usually all I do is sprinkle a little water on the floor and mop it up with a damp mop.

I don't have small children playing on the floor anymore but I do have pets that leave footprints, pet food and hair all over the place.

I have 3 cats which equals so much fur...and on top of that 3 kids...one teen one tween and one that I still consider a toddler but he is really nearing 4 so we can hardly call him that any more I suppose...but basically I sweep sometimes twice a day, I will swiffer about every other day and I mop once a week. Sometimes it has to be mopped more than once a week, I cannot stand the floor to be sticky.

Weekly and because dirty floors really get to me, too, twice a year I do all tile and marble floors on my hands and knees drying as I go because sometimes I feel like the mop is just pushing dirty water around. I don't think your husband's expertise includes homemaking - yuck, once a year?

LOL - I've always wondered this!

Honestly, monthly. But the joke in our house is that with how many spills and dropped foods there are I end up washing almost the entire kitchen floor through the course of a week.

I sweep or vac it almost daily, including climbing under the table and moving all the chairs. I am quite neurotic about wiping down the floor/washing it after food drops or there are spills tho. I guess that's my reasoning for not washing it entirely more often.

For the most part we remove shoes upon entering the house, so I'm not THAT worried about "germs" on the floor.

Well we eat in our kitchen and with 3 kids it get's pretty messy , especially around the table , I sweep over everyday or hoover depending on how much has been dropped , and I mop (with a bucket and mop) every other day.

Hardly ever. We have a huge rug in the kitchen. One of our dogs can't walk on tiles so I bought an area rug so she can walk without her leg going out on her. (The things we do for our pets!)

I have to use the carpet cleaner on it. I HONESTLY would rather mop than go thru that process. Having carpet in a kitchen is gross when the carpet is dirty but nice in the winter.

Just an FYI, when she "goes" so does the rug!

Not often enough. I hate to say it, but every other week! I have two very, very busy boys who constantly track in things so its a never ending battle. I do sweep daily though- 1 or 2 x a day. So that counts for something doesn't it?? LOL

M

I don't mop anymore.
I have a steam mop and I love it ( wait I guess that is kind of a mop) , but anyway I only do it like once every 2 weeks or so like you do.
sweep once a week. or more often if the dogs have come in particularly dirty.

I mop every other week. I sweep as it needs it (usually once or twice a week) and have a shark steam mop that I use for touch ups in between.

Sweep daily mop weekly. I did not used too but I realized that once the toys were picked up and the floor was swept I was only 8 minutes away from a mop job. I started mopping more regularly be ause it makes me feel like my house is cleaner.

Sweep/vacuum area rugs &/or Swiffer wet about 2x per week. Hands & knees with bucket of water & soap & rag--every 2-3 weeks.

every day but i have 2 black dogs and OCD with white floors. sorry i know your husband dosnt want to here that but mop when u think it needs it. good luck

I sweep it every day. I mop it once or twice a week.

I sweep almost every day - but then I have a toddler, who likes crumby foods.
I mop once a week, I have a white linoleum floor (thanks MIL who decorated the house b4 I had it!) and it shows EVERYTHING!

I try to mop with a bucket once a week, but sweep or vacuum every other day. Sometimes, I just Swiffer it if I get too lazy to break out the real mop.

Once a week. But I don't use a mop, I use a mop stick with a wet, soapie towel instead of a mop. It dries faster and is easier. If someone spills something I spray the floor with greased lightening and wipe with rag. I had the swifer....I swear you have to change that damn pad like every two swipes it's so small!

once a week or two. if there is something sticky or gross than i mop it extra. i guess maybe that makes me gross, too?

once a day, but when I was working FT prob. once every 3-4 days.

You'll think I'm excessive, but on a good week, every other day. However, I have pets and kids and lot's hard flooring in my house.

I sweep/vacuum every other day or so and mop only every other month at the most. I have hardwood floors and the installer said it is not good to mop too much. If I see or feel a spot, I clean it up with a wet papertowel.

I try and mop once a week and usually sweep once a day. It looks clean to me but i know otherwise. I have a shark steam mop that i use most of time or sometimes I get my reg mop and cleaner out. Depends on time and how my daughter is acting to be honest.
