How Often Do You Check Your Mail?

I am not asking about email but the mail you get in the mailbox which is located few feet away from home or at the end of the road for some(liike us) to which you need to bundle up and walk in the cold. How I wish they they could deliver mail right to our doorstep ;)

How often do you check your mailbox? Everyday? And if you have a husband who procastinates going through the mail and shredding old ones, where do you put it until it gets done? How often do you shred your old mails? or do you just throw they away?

What can I do next?

Sam, you made M. laugh out loud. I am the same way. All junk mail goes directly into the recycle bin.

That's one of my 5 year old's "jobs" and he does it everyday. I think it gives him a little kick that he's a "big boy" and trusted to go to the street by himself. I remember loving to do that at my grandma's house when I was his age...

Ours is at the end of our driveway. We get our mail every day.
I put his mail (magazines, bills, etc) on his desk. If it's obvious junk mail, I recycle bin it--he doesn't care to look at junk mail.
Joint things go on "The Divider" in the kitchen.
My stuff in the vertical file holder on The Divider.

I try to follow the "O. touch" rule for mail....toss, bill pay pile, or save for later.
Truthfully it's the boatful of paper from the school each week that gets M. more than the mail!

I also get the mail each day - it's actually one of the highlights of my day! Our mailbox is right outside our front door =)

My parents' mailbox is at the end of their long driveway but they also get the mail every day!

I can totally understand what you're saying about not wanting to bundle up and walk to the end of the driveway in the cold to check the mailbox each day - I feel the same when when it comes to getting the newspaper four times a week!

My husband gets it every day when he comes home from work. I throw junk mail that doesn't need shredding right into the recycling bin. My husband takes the bills then everything else like grocery store flyers that I need to hang on to sit on the counter for the week. We are really bad at shredding old mail, we have a huge bag full in our closet that we are not looking forward to going through!!

I'm terrible about it. My husband is great about it. So, in my head, it's his job. He doesn't have that many around the house, anyway. =D

The problem is that he started a new job that has him away from home Mon-Thurs. I usually remember to get it on my way into the neighborhood on Thursday.

Junk gets tossed. I deal with mine and put anything I need to keep in a pocket on the refrigerator. My husband puts anything he needs to keep either in my hands when I'm on the couch and can't do anything with it or he lays it down wherever he happens to be. Ugh.

We don't have a locked mailbox, so we get our mail daily. We've had mail theft before and I really don't care to go through that again. I also never put out-going mail in our box anymore for the same reason. These thieves are looking for checks so they can steal your identity. So all of our bills and everything I drop in a public mailbox or the post office. Now if we had a locked box I'd probably be a bit more lazy with getting it.

I check it every day. I'm out there every day any way walking my son home from the bus stop so I check it on the way back. We just throw junk mail away - we do not shred it. Every bill we pay through automatic payment with our bank. Most of our mail is junk/ads/catalogs and the few magazines we get.

Blech, our mailbox is down the street and around the corner. I check it about once a week, as we drive by. I have to make a conscious effort to check the mail, otherwise I would never even drive past the mailbox... We don't hardly get anything except junk mail, coupons, ads, etc. I only check it often if its someone's birthday or a holiday, bc my grandma sends us cards :-)

We check every afternoon.
Junk mail and catalogs we don't want go right into recycling.
We have an In box on our desk that mail goes into.
We have a small box by the shredder for things that will need shredding.
When the box gets full, we shred, so how often we do it depends on how long it takes for the box to fill up.

Mom:

I check our mail box daily. I throw away/recycle the trash - set aside the bills - everything is paid automatically anyway - so we compare the bill to what was drafted out.

I shred or get rid of monthly.

I check my mail every day.

I have a narrow table by my front door, with a recycling bin underneath it. Mail gets sorted the instant I bring it in--ads get tossed right into the bin, junk mail gets opened, torn & trashed. My mail gets dealt with immediately. My hubby's mail goes into his own bin.

Our mailbox is at the end of our driveway, but we live on a few acres, so the driveway is a football field and a half long. We check the mail everyday. Sometimes I check it when I drive in, and sometimes our 7yo walks out to check it. I always go through it immediately and shred most of it. The bills go into a drawer with the bills to be paid first on top.

Check my mail everyday, and we burn our paper. Why does just your husband go through the mail? I ask cuz my husband won't touch the mail. I do the bills when it really should be done by both people.

All these efficient people! During the winter it is common for M. to only get the mail once a week...on Sunday when I am already all bundled up to go to Church. Our mailbox is on the other side of a busy street so it takes about 5 minutes to cross the street and get back. When the snow is piled up it is not very safe as I can't get off the street if cars are coming...and I usually have at least one child in tow. We have been getting it more lately as we have school twice a week now so we are out and about more.

...and it just piles up on our half-wall until the pile is completely ridiculous and I finally do something about it. My DH does the bills and gets mad if I "hide" anything by actually trying to organize things :)

DAILY. ...

We run our business from home and customers send their payments to our address $$$ I'm not leaving in the box overnight! My incoming invoices for materials also come to my house and I also make sure my accounts payables are up to date.

I'll bundle up anyday to get my accounts receivables and go make a bank deposit!

Everything else that has one of our names on it and is junk gets shredded. It is all put away and done with within minutes at my house.

Our mailbox is on our house, right next to the door. We still have a mailman that walks through the neighborhood. Obviously, I check it daily...since I only have to stick my arm out the door a bit!

We are in a town so small we have to have a PO box, altough we only live down the alley of the same block as our Post office, I am still bad about checking it. I would say once or twice a week we go get it - with 2 preschoolers, I have many "better things to do" than going to the post office.

Our post office also has rediculous hours for people actually working at the "window", M-F 9-11 am and 12-4 pm, and Sat. 9-10:30 am. Now, you can go in and open your own PO box any time between 8 am and 8 pm with your key, but most of the boxes are smaller than a toddler's shoe box - so if you get too much mail, or any kind of a package, they will put a yellow slip for you to get it at the window....BUT usually it makes it really hard to get to the window if you have a JOB ( not many of those in town, most people her edrive anywhere from 12 miles to 60 miles for their jobs), because they are only open when you are working, then Saturday if you want ot sleep in, forget getting your stuff. It is sooooo frustrating. I really wish we still had door to door delivery, in fact even UPS and Fed Ex have started delivering their stuff to the post office too instead of the porch! The next little town over only has 200 more people than us and they still have walking mail carriers?

So for those of you with your mailbox right next to your door, don't take it for granted! The way the USPS is going ( closing smaller offices left and right, ) you might not have that someday!
