How Much Would You Expect to Pay to Have a Room Repainted?

Do you have a ballpark figure I can use for guidance? Should I expect to be priced by square foot or by # of rooms? How much of the prep should I expect to do? Do I have to move furniture away from the walls? Remove pictures and hardware? Wash the walls? Spackle and sand? Clean up during and afterwards?

I've only ever done it myself before. But with baby underfoot I'd sooner bring someone in and have the whole job done in a day. Rather than piecemeal. During naps, nights and weekends.

Thanks
F. B.

I would expect each room to be at least a couple hundred. They probably would take less time if everything was moved where they had complete access but that would be up to the painter and their preferences. I'd want my stuff out of the room so there was no chance of paint drips.

You need to ask these questions of the place you have doing it.

I buy the paint. I don't like the cheap paint that they use. I buy the Marquee and it's $45 a gallon.

I just had my hallway painted (from front door down to family room and up the stairs to the bedrooms) I have a split level entry and it was $700 - this included dry wall repair and painting. They removed the pictures, spackled the holes, and such.

Our family room which is 30 by 25 was done for $300 - why so cheap?? Because I had had water damage so the room was totally empty and they didn't have to move anything or bring in drop cloths, etc. Again - I paid for the paint too.

Your area will also determine your price. Go to Groupon or Angie's list and you can find deals.

I love painting and if I wasn't preparing to move myself I would volunteer my services for free because I love painting that much. LOL.

If you require your painter to move furniture, repair walls, clean walls, remove pictures and hardware the price for painting will go up. You should definitely consider buying the paint you want. A paint with the primer in it is great to have and use. Also since you have an newborn you should really consider getting paint that doesn't have fumes. These types of paint cost more but are well worth their prices for the peace of mind and ease of use and clean up.

I had 4 rooms painted which had no furniture in them for $800.00. It took them 2 days to complete the job. I actually got those painters from outside a hardware store. They were day laborers. My husband negotiated the price and payment. They actually did an exceptional job. I recently painted over one of the rooms because I grew weary of the original color chosen. I opted to swap it out for something more vibrant but still dark.

Happy painting.

It's been a while since we've had rooms painted but I would think it would be around $200/room. I would think the only thing you need to do is prep the room by moving furniture and taking stuff off the wall. I think spackling and such should be done by them. Additionally they should bring tarps to place over the furniture in the center of the room. They should clean up everything and you move your furniture back.

My only other suggestion however would be to really make sure you like the color. I would get a few samples and paint big swatches on the wall before deciding. Look at them during all hours of the day to see which one you like. When we had my daughter's nursery painted I HATED the color once it was on the wall and we paid to have it redone. Leave the paint there and the painter will paint over it. It's not a big deal.

I would not expect it to be less than $200. per room and that depends on what you want done and what paint brand you use.

They should wipe down the walls, move big furniture, remove nails, and clean up. Spackleing and sanding is if you want them to remove nails and fill in the holes, but that will take more then a day.

I recommend getting at least three estimates and go from there.

Another thing that will effect price... The price will also depend on what color you are painting the room. Our morning room is a red color. It required many coats of paint. The painter had to come back 3 or 4 days. I think it was $400-500. The room has a cathedral ceiling (and we had the ceiling painted too) but minimal wall space since the room is predominately all windows and a French door. The painter moved the furniture. The painter did not paint any of the trim, just the walls and ceiling.

This could vary widely.
How complicated is the room (lot's of windows, mouldings, lamps/sconces/shelves on the walls)?
Will it take a long time to tape everything off (and a lot of painters tape)?
Do they have to remove any wallpaper first?
Repair any holes in the plaster/drywall?
How high is the ceiling (will they need scaffolding to reach high places - our living room has a 16 ft high ceiling)?
How expensive is the paint? Will they have to mix a custom color? Will they have to do 2 or more coats?
Do you want any stenciled boarders?
I'd remove as much from the room as possible (furniture, rugs, stuff, etc) and put drop clothes over everything you can't move.

No idea. The only time I ever paid someone to paint was doing half the house (the main rooms with 14 foot ceilings) or when we built our current home and were given upcharge rates for additional colors/patterns of paint for rooms (I think we were budgeted for 2 colors, and it was an additional $100 for each additional color we wanted to use).

I would think your best bet would be just to call up some painters and ask what they charge and what it includes. They may want to do their own prep work to ensure the final product quality. But I'd bet they will expect you to have the furniture moved. LOL

I am trying to remember... I think we paid maybe $500 plus the cost of paint? - that was for a bedroom and bathroom, and the bathroom had cathedral ceilings. I do remember that they did everything, including moving and draping the furniture, spackling, etc.

Call a local painter for an estimate. There is no way to tell you that from here. Does it need to be scraped and primed? What color is it, and what color will it be painted? What color are the walls inside? What size are the rooms? What condition are the walls in? There are just too many variables to give an accurate answer. Call a local contractor (3 would be better), and get quotes. Make sure that you compare the bids closely. If one contractor is using Benjamin Moore paint and another is using Glidden, the Moore guy's price will be higher, but you will get a MUCH better job. Ask for and check references. Hope this helps.

Depends on the height of the room, current color, new color (how many coats) but I think it would be fairly easy to call around and get some initial quotes.
Probably couldn't be done in a day if you were doing it "right" with primer and at least two coats of paint, but on the other hand if a single coat will do you may be able to get a local high school or college kid to do it for like a hundred bucks.

I just did my boys room. It is not so much the price of labor for me. My concern is the right paint they use, so there is less odor and toxic, hence a better air quality and safe for babies.
I used NATURA paint from Benjamin Moore. $60 a gallon.
Pricey but it gives me peace of mind
