My son turns 1 today and i am taking him off formula. I have been mixing formula and milk in sippy cups all weekend and he has been doing really good. I still gave him a bottle at night with ceral in it. How full do babies get on whole milk vs. formula? When he was on the bottle i was giving him 3 ounces every 3 hours with ceral because of his acid reflux. We have made it past the reflux stage (thank god) so how much whole milk should i give him now? and how often does he need to drink it? and should i continue to give him a bottle with whole milk and ceral at night or is that to much? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

At this age, I gave my boys a cup with milk at every meal except snack and that was juice.

He shouldn't need a bottle with cereal at night, unless that is when you feed him supper.

Also, he is old enough to be weaned from the bottle.

He should be eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a mid morning snack and a mid afternoon snack all of this is solid food with milk at meals and juice at snack.

When my daughter turned 1 her pediatrician said she should get 12-16 oz of milk per day. She's 2 now and her pediatrician still says 12-16 oz. So, basically she gets milk with breakfast, lunch, & dinner, and water in between.

As Michelle K said, my daughter's pedi said too much milk could cause anemia....but that she did need some milk; she told me to give her about 24 oz a day. She also told me that my daughter needed whole milk for the fat content...and not 2%. The fat helps in brain development.

That is something that you ay have to ask your doctor or his doctor. The wic office should tell you how much milk is okay to give him and how much you should give him verses food.

He actually doesn't "need" milk. My son's doctor actually told me I was giving him too much milk so I started doing some research and learned milk isn't all it's cracked up to be.

A good book to read on it is "What's In Your Milk?" by Dr Samuel Epstein He is head of the Cancer Prevention Coalition out of University of IL.

As for at night... it is not a good idea to give a bottle at bed time. I am not sure if that is what you mean by night or not. A bottle at night should only have water in it. Anything else, especially milk, could cause tooth decay and should be avoided.

Toddlers should not have more than 24oz milk in a 24 hour period because it can cause a certain type of anemia caused by bleeding in the intestines. they require 6 servings of dairy per day to get the calcium and vitamin D they need. A serving is A) 4oz of milk, B) 4oz of yogurt, C) 1oz hard cheese (think cheddar and colby cheese), or D) 1/2 cup ice cream. I got a toddler food pyramid from my health unit in Mississippi when my daughter was that age, don't know if they have them around here or not.

As for the bottles with cereal, I gave dd one with cereal until about 15months, but I slowly weaned the cereal out of it...going from 1tsp per oz, to 3/4 then to 1/2 then none. Then I started the transition to nothing but sippy cups.

In theory, your one-year-olds diet and feeding schedule should be mostly like yours. He should eat breakfast, then a couple hours later he should have a snack, then an hour or two later have lunch, then a snack late-afternoon, then dinner and possibly a snack or a bottle before bed-time. I found with my daughter that if i gave her cheese and crackers or yogurt before bed time then that helped her reflux more than putting a liquid right before bed did.
