I am having problems with my current nanny. I offered her 250-300 a week for my two toddlers. She agreed but then she said she thought that was my part time wage and last summer she got 380.00/ week for two older school age children. How much do you pay your nanny? What is the difference between a nanny and a babysitter? She is with the children all day and is only responsible for making one meal, lunch, and I usually have that prepared for her. Please help! I am running out of options. My last nanny left b/c I was only paying her $5/hr but she was pregnant and needed a job so she agreed. Then she came back to me and said that someone else offered her more money and her dr said she needed to be at home on a special diet, and so on...so I let her go b/c it was to much drama.
Am I doing something wrong? I have a three year old boy who is potty trained and an 18 month old girl, they are very well behaved, and I am very easy going...I just don't know what my other options are. I need advice... HELP!!!
C., I think you will find that for someone to come to you (vs. you going to them) is going to be more expensive. For two kids in an in-home daycare, I would expect to pay $250-$300 a week (I'm paying $140 a week for my 1 child now). So you have to decide for yourself if the convenience of having someone come to your house is worth the extra money. If not, then I would seriously look into some home daycares.
I also don't know the difference between a nanny and a babysitter! The rate I was paying a 22 year old for one child was 9 dollars an hour, which I thought was high, but seemed to be the going rate with whomever else I checked. Some were more than that ($10-$15 an hour). She would help a little with the dishes, do some cooking for the baby, and do some laundry folding only.

Maybe it is worth it to look into a good daycare for the kids. They are at an age they could probably use the socialization and it may save some money.

gosh, i understand your frustration. I am always racking my brain as to what to pay my sitter. We have a wonderful sitter who watches just my 1 child who is 3 all day on wednesdays and about 3 hrs on saturdays. We pay her $7 an hr. The way we figured it is that she is 20 and can go anywhere to get a job that pays at least min. wage. If we pay her cash thats more than what she would get at a regular job and so that way we can ensure ourselves that it's worth her time and she wont go anywere. Now my husband and I are planning for a second child. we'll probably up it to about $9 an hr. after that. Now if she was watching my 2 children every day for $9 an hr. Evan that much, if she were watching your 2 kids 8 hrs a day 5 days a week thats $360. That's good $$$ for being paid under the table. My neighbor had a nanny who watched their 1 daughter full time and they only paid her $250 a week.
I know it gets complicated, but i guess if you like her enough $380 isn't a whole lot of $$. It's saves you the trouble of having to find another nanny and have the kids get used to her and you get used to her and she get used to your family. Uggg what a headache!!!

We pay $10/hr ($400/wk) for our nanny. Now that my DD is approaching 2 years we are transitioning her to an at home day care which is much more cost friendly. It seemed to me this was about the going rate when I was looking. However our current nanny is worth her weight in gold. I do the same as you and I will come home and find she has done many an unasked chore. It makes my life so much easier!!!!
