How Many Top Teeth for a 5 Yr Old??

I know this may be the silliest question ever asked but I need to know how many top teeth a 5 yr old should have?
My daughter started complaining that it feels like she has a half tooth on both sides of her top teeth and after looking, it looks as if 2 more teeth have grown in but they do not look normal and she is complaining they hurt.
I will get her in the dentist first thing tomorrow for the pain but I just found it odd that she would be growing in more teeth at this age before they have fallen out!
I've counted a total of 12 top teeth and 10 bottom teeth so if that is the correct number, please let me know .

Thanks in advance for any helpful info!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you so much to everyone that has responded.
It was very helpful info and now I know she is definitely getting her 6 yr old molars in and she turns 6 this week so that makes perfect sense.
I went ahead and scheduled a dentist appt to have them checked and make sure they are growing in properly.
Thanks Again!!

According to the following web site - they have 20 total ...

However, my son who is 6, is sleeping, so I can't count his ... though at the age of 6, he's already lost 6 baby teeth! :-)

A few months ago my son said his back tooth broke....I made a dentist appt immediately. We went in and it was his 6 year molars coming in. They were just partially in and just looked like nubs. They are supposed to grow those in around 5 or 6 years old so that is probably exactly what it is. I just assumed he already had all his teeth...but what did I know. I am sure that is what your daughter has growing in.

I am a dental hygienist and I would bet that she's getting her six year molars. She does not loose teeth to get these; they just grow in behind the baby molars. Even though she is only five, it is not unusal for a girl to be getting them at that age because they are usually earlier on tooth eruption than boys. The nomenclature of six year molars, twelve year molars, etc. just comes from the average age they erupt. Once she gets all of her six year molars in, she will have 22 teeth (2 new ones on top and 2 new ones on bottom). Hope this helps.
