How many naps a day should my 10 1/2 month old be getting? I need input from mothers instead of reading articles. My son sleeps 11 hours straight and he has been having about 3 naps a day. What about napping schedule for a one year old?

What can I do next?

Kids have a way of putting themselves on their own schedule. Soon he will be down to two naps a day and then from about 16-18 months will probably transition to one nap a day. If he seems tired, put him down.

I know my little one needs a nap when she gets clumsy. She is 15 months and takes 1 nap a day and occassionally 2 if she had a short nap.

My son when he was 10mths took 2 naps after sleeping all nite. One at 10am and another at 2pm. All kids are different tho, they will nap when they are tired.

My son is 28mths now and dont take naps everyday.

Your son needs as many naps as he needs. If he needs 3 naps, he needs three naps. Somedays he may need 3, some days he may need none. As he gets older, this will all evolve. Don't focus on articles and numbers, they provide some guidelines, you will find parenting much easier if you focus on what works for your kid.

Hi B. - It sounds like if he's sleeping 11 hrs straight at night, then the naps he's taking during the day aren't affecting his ability to sleep at bed time, which in my experience seems to be the que that naps need to be changed. When my daughter was 10 mo. she was down to two naps (morning and afternoon) and slept about 10-11 hrs at night. My advice and the advice I've gotten from other mothers is to follow their ques when it comes to sleeping/naps. If he doesn't seem ready to go to bed at a decent hr at night then it's time to start cutting back on naps. Good luck and enjoy the naps while they last! I miss them these days. :-)

I would just follow your baby's lead. If he is sleeping through the nights and is napping on his own, let him go. Some kids require more sleep than others. My oldest was a great napper, number 2 not so much, and number 3 (also 10 months old) is a good napper too. I found early on to pitch the magazines and let common sense prevail. When a child is well rested, they are happier and healthier. My 10 month old takes 2 naps some days, some days only one, and other days he seems to catnap off and on. I find he is happier and so am I, if I let him do what he wants.

don't mess with a good thing! If your child is happy, content, & thriving.......then embrace this! It's a gift that many Moms would love to have.

There are a lot of good tips here. I know that from working in a day care once the child can walk they are forced to one nap a day. My son is 20 months old and still wakes up one to two times a night. Last night the first time was three hours after putting him to bed, for a drink of water. The second time was about 3 hours later for no reason, pushed the cup away and would not let go of me to get back into his bed. Do not know why so I envey you that your son will sleep 11 hours straight. I do not know what a good nights sleep is with having a 20 month old and a 5 year old one is always waking me up a night for some reason.
I would not worry about how many naps your son takes. I would not mess with a good thing. My son's naps are either 30 min to 3 hours and he only takes the one a day.

I have to agree with Angie. My 16 month old has only been taking 1 nap a day since she was probably 6 months old. At that point she would sleep for 3-4 hours at a time for that nap but it was a whole lot easier to keep her on the same schedule as her sister who was 2 at the time. If he wants to sleep, let him but if he only needs two naps then don't try to force him to sleep. Do what is right for the two of you. As long as he is getting close to the recommend range of sleep per day, he will be fine.

My daughter was taking a morning nap around 9:30 or 10 and then would take an afternoon nap about 2 and then sleep anywhere between 11 to 13 hours a night. Now that she is almost 18 months she only takes 1 nap a day.
I work at a daycare with the one year olds and they only take 1 nap (from 11-2:30ish)a day. every child is different and you as his mom knows how much sleep he needs. in my opinion, i think that maybe one of your sons naps needs to go. he will probably be fussy for about the first week that he drops down to 2 naps a day, but it will be worth it in the long run!

babies can sleep from 10-14 hours a day so if his 3 naps are short ones then he is probably fine. my kids slept 10-12 hours at night and had a 2 hour nap during the day usually at 12 or 1:00 after lunch, then would stay awake until bedtime at night around 8:30-9:00 and slept through the night and woke up around 8:00 am.

How long are his 3 naps? If they're about an hour long each then that sounds normal. Babies this young need A LOT of sleep per day.

Check out www.babycenter.com which had the following advice.

"Sleep is vital for babies and young children, whose brains and bodies are developing at an extraordinary rate — but nighttime rest isn't enough. Regular naps help them get the sleep they need.

Do your best to encourage your baby to nap consistently. But keep in mind that his temperament and natural bodily rhythms will help determine how and when he naps. Some babies nap for long stretches every day right from the start and settle easily into a pattern. Others do just fine taking shorter naps or napping at less regular times.

At 9 to 12 months, most babies are down to a solid two naps a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. And by 18 months, most children give up their morning nap altogether but continue to snooze in the afternoon. They'll continue with this pattern until they're 3 or 4 years old.

These are typical patterns, but not all babies follow them. Every baby has his own unique sleep habits."

I agree it completely depends on the child, but I think on average that is around the age where most go from 3 to 2 naps. From the 'Sleep Medicine and Research Center' at St. Luke's (Chesterfield, MO): 6 - 12 month-olds average 14 - 15 hours of sleep per day (total including naps) and 1 - 2 year-olds average 13.75 - 14 hours per day. It's just a guideline though. My son will be one this week and sleeps 10 - 11 hours at night and a total of 2 - 3 hours during the day spread between 2 naps. So he's only getting 12 - 14 total and is a happy guy! I've been keeping these guidelines in mind, but following his lead. Good luck!

i'll just echo what the other ladies said - mine took two. it does depend on the child but if you notice him taking longer to go to sleep, or being wired when you wish he'd be sleeping at night, then maybe it's time to cut it down. by the time my son was 14-15 months he was only taking one. just look for his cues and you'll probably notice when he's ready to sleep less during the day.

That sounds pretty normal to me. My son(now 6 yrs) was (and still is) a good napper and still sleeps great at night. I have noticed that he will sleep quite a bit more when he is going through a growth spurt. I agree with some of the other responces--enjoy the naps while you can. Because there will more than likely come a day when he will be very energetic all day long and then you will want a nap. :) Good luck!

Every child is different. I think that if your little guy acts like he needs that much sleep, he probably does. In my experience, they usually shrink down to two naps sometime before your little guy, but like I said, every child is unique. Then, at about 18 months or so (give or take) they shrink down to one longer nap. I would say as long as your little guy is sleeping 45 minutes or an hour at each nap, he's right on target for him.

I have two boys 6 and 2. I put down for a nap at 10 months old right after they had lunch. That should be enough. Hayden is sleeping way too much. As an ex- nurse, he should only be sleeping about 10 hours a night, and a 3 hour nap. Any more than that can cause some problems later. It will be hard to get him use to the new schedule, it should only take him about two weeks for it to work. Keep him active! Good Luck!

Both of my girls took 2 naps a day from 6 months until about 18 months when they started only taking 1 afternoon nap. They say a baby needs about 14 hours at 10 months and about 13-14 at a year. I hope this helps.

I know you don't want references, but The Sleep Lady's Guide to Sleep is fantastic. I really didn't know what kind of schedule our daughter should be on (she's 11 months old) and this book outlines an ideal plan for kids from birth to 5 years old. I read it because when she was 5mos old she stopped sleeping. Completely. She slept for 4 hours in a 24 hour period on Christmas Eve. We have had much more success with her sleep following the guidelines in there.

Her schedule is that she sleeps at night from 7pm-7am (she does still get up once around 2 or 3am which technically she's not supposed to do, but I'll take it). Then, on a good day, she naps from 9am-11am, and 2pm-4pm. At 10 months, they can be napping a little earlier in the afternoon, say 1pm-3pm, with a short (half hour) late afternoon nap. Our daughter sometimes still does that. She also doesn't sleep for two hours for both of her naps - one is usually only an hour.

This is just a general guideline, too - for example last night she went to bed at 7pm, woke up at 2:30am like usual, then this morning was up at 5:45am - for the day. So she started napping at 8am and it will throw off the rest of her schedule today. But overall, this seems to work pretty well. Good luck! (Someday we'll be able to sleep again, right?)

Every child is different. You have to watch for signs from him. Does he seem tired? Is he sleeping okay at night with taking three naps or do the naps seem like too much that he isn't sleeping well at night? Or does it seem just right? Just watch for signs from him and how he does during the day and night.

Hi B.,

In my opinion he should take a nap 2 hours after he wakes up, so if he wakes up at 7 am and gets ready for the day he should then have breakfast and go back down for a nap around 9 am and sleep for about an 1 hour and a half.

Then he should wake up have play time for about an hour, have lunch and go back down for nap again. So lunch at about 11:30 - 12:00 and then nap shortly after that by atleast 1 pm. He should then sleep until 3 or 4 but not past 4 pm.
When he wakes up a small snack and then dinner around 5 or 6 and to bed between 8 and 9 and sleep for the rest of the night. I am a big believer in kids having a schedule, you don't have to be strict about it but a general guideline is good and regular sleeping times. W.
