How Long to Wait After Nursing and Before Next Pregnancy to Get Lasik?

I have talked to a few different Lasik places to get opinions on how to space out my Lasik with nursing and pregnancy, and everyone is giving me different answers! I am still nursing my daughter who turned 1 year old two weeks ago, and I want to start trying for my next baby around December. I was hoping to get Lasik surgery in between, but I'm worried that the spacing won't work. I have heard everything from it's okay to do it while nursing, to waiting three months after I finish weaning to get it done. As far as my next pregnancy, some people said I can get pregnant right after, and some say wait six months to get pregnant. I don't want to risk having problems with my eye sight! I need help with what to do!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your advice. I have decided to wait until I am finished having kids and breastfeeding. It is just disappointing to have the Lasik consultants tell you that you are a great candidate when it is not the best thing at the time. I guess they just want your money. Thanks again!

Well, I don't know about the Lasik (I would LOVE to do it in the future though), but I also nursed my son past one year and never started a normal period after I was done weaning. I am now 4 months pregnant.

My point is, it can be hard to tell when your body is ready after weaning.

Also, according to my Doctor and all the pregnancy books I read, pregnancy can greatly change your eyesite (it happened to me!), imo, it would be like putting braces on baby teeth...

I had Lasik in February 2001 and then got pg with my first that June. My eyes were GREAT after the Lasik, but pg and then breastfeeding really did make my eyesight worse. All the hormone changes do effect your eyesight. It wasn't bad enough to need contacts or glasses, but it was a noticeable difference from the 20/15 eyesight I had after the Lasik.

I breastfed my son for a year and then immediately got pg with my 2nd child (and had a m/c before that), so my eyesight never had a chance to go back to normal. Now that my youngest is 3 1/2, my eyesight is better... I'd say it started getting better about 6 months to a year AFTER I stopped nursing him, and I nursed him for a year. But it still isn't as good as it was after the Lasik. Maybe it would've slowly declined to this point anyway even if I'd never gotten pg or breastfed. And my eyesight is still worlds better than it was pre-Lasik, still no need foir contacts or glasses.

I would recommend waiting about 6 months to a year after you are done having kids and breastfeeding before having Lasik. I think you'll get the best results that way.

I have been thinking exactly the same thing as you - wanting to get Lasik. I have a 14 month old son, and we want more kids. I have decided to wait until I am completely for sure done with having kids (& nursing) b/c of the hormone changes that happen. Why get Lasik and then have your eyes change? Talk about waste of money, and Lasik is not cheap! Better safe than sorry, all the way around!

My doctor also said that pregnancy can change your vision so best to wait till you are done. He said he likes for his patients to wait 6 months after nursing to get lasik. I had wanted to do lasik in between my kids because it would be so nice to see in the middle of the night without trying to find the glasses. It did not work out for me, but instead my doctor gave me some contacts that I can sleep in and I love them. Check out that option - some of the new technology is better and you really can sleep in them without having to take them out in the morning. Also, if you do get lasik done - I have heard best to have your main eye doctor to follow you. My doctor does all the testing to make sure you really are a candidate for lasik, sends you to the surgeon, and then does the follow up. You want to make sure you have the best possible care when it comes to your eyes.

I had the same problem. I've decided to wait until I'm done with pregnancy and nursing--I'd hate to have to get the LASIK procedure again. My youngest is just about to turn 2, so I guess I'll be waiting about another year.

I inquired about the same thing before I had my second child. My doctor advised me to wait until I am done having all of my children and nursing them before I got it done. He said that hormones can change your vision in some cases quite dramatically. I am still nursing so I am still waiting!
