How Do You Know If You Should Have Your Child Tested for Diabetes?

Recently, our well mannered first grader has been acting out a lot at school and having problems on the bus. When we talk to him about it he says that he really isn't sure why he is doing the things that he is doing. This weekend, we talked to him more about it and he broke down, started crying and then told us that he is hungry ALL the time. He pretty much has free access to food at home, has a snack for school and a well packed lunch. We've noticed him acting out more at home if when he is hungry. After he eats he is like a different kid. Also, he seems more tired lately. He is also running to the bathroom at home more frequently. He is also saying that he is thirsty - so we figure that is why he is going to the bathroom more. I've read that behavior problems could be caused by diabetes. Is anyone else aware of this? And how did you know that you needed to have your child tested?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded!! Yesterday we took our son in for a diabetes test. Our wonderful ped's doc shared our concern and did the finger prick which came back at 207 which she said was too high, she then did blood/urine tests. Since she knew we were so concerned she even called us at home last night (after hours) when the test results came in. Fortunately he's fine!!! She does have us keeping watch on his habits, and said that he might be sensitive to low blood sugar and may have to schedule snack for him. But he doesn't have diabetes!! Thanks so much to all the moms who really care and take the time for other moms out there! You're AWESOME!

S. - My daughter is 12 but at 4 she started wetting the bed at night. She was thirsty all the time and had major mood swings. I called the doc and asked for a blood sugar test as I suspected the same thing you are. Normal in a non diabetic person is 80 - 120. Her blood sugar was over 700 and he didn't know how she was up and walking around and not in a sugar induced coma (ketoacidosis). I would definitely have him tested it's really easy, just a little finger poke. Good luck to you! K.

get him tested- ASAP! My nephew was 11 when teachers wanted him tested for ADHD... said he was acting a little hyper in class. While he also had excessive thirst and was always going to the bathroom... they thought about diabetes, but almost didn't test him as he'd been tested a few months earlier at a physical, as it ran in the family. As they live in a small town, she wanted an objective opinion and I had them booked at a pediatrician here in the TC the next day... and sure enough, he was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes.

Your son has the classic symptoms. He may not have it, but it's nothing to fool around with. If he's not tested and treated, he could end up in the ER in a critical state called diabetic ketoacidosis (http://diabetes.webmd.com/tc/diabetic-ketoacidosis-dka-to.... If he doesn't have it, then you know- and can deal with the issues for what they are- but for his sake, please don't wait!

Good question and answers from everyone responding. This isn't any advice but, I think I will be bringing my 4 year old daughter to be tested also for she seems to have the same problems your son does. Always hungry, thirsty, pee's alot and has some behavioral issues. Since I had Gestational Diabetes when I was pregnant with both my children I guess there could be a chance she could get diabetes.

It doesn't take much to be tested so I would just go do it. If anything you'll know forsure and be relieved.

My husband is a diabetic. My suggestion, get him tested. If does not hurt if the doctor says he does not have it, you will not have wonder any more. It seems like we have all said the same thing, but I would not mess around, test him. Please let us know what you decide/find out.

I would have him go through a complete physical--not just diabetes, but have his thyroid checked, too.

If nothing's wrong, make sure he's eating high-protein and high-fiber foods. If he is eating a lot of stuff like potato chips or sweets he may never feel full.

Another sign of diabetes is a very sweet odor it is called ketoacidosis, this occurs when the sugars are way out of wack. It is keytones in the urine. I would consult with your Dr. It is always best to be safe.

Always ere on the side of caution so they say. I work with a child who has "acting out" behaviour...he is always hungry, to the point where he often gets angry. We are trying to encourage his mom to get him tested for diabetes. I am a teacher, I have seen this a few times. Hope all gets better!

Complaining of hunger, thirst, and frequent urination are all good signs of diabetes. Acting out can also be a good symptom. If in doubt, have him checked. If it's not diabetes, your doctor may have other ideas of what it might be.

My thought is if you're thinking it, do it. When my youngest was at his 9 month well check I mentioned that he peed a ton so they did a blood test just to be safe. I always go with my gut. If it were me I would talk to the doctor. Even it it's not diabetes it could be something else that the doctor can diagnose. Good luck :o)
