How Do You Find a Babysitter?

I live in The Colony with my husband and my 14 month old. We have been able to have a friend sit with our son about 3 times since he was born. Can someone tell me how to find a good babysitter? We don't have many friends and we really need some "alone" time.

Thanks so much for all of your responses. We should have no trouble now getting a little time to ourselves. Thanks again!

One way is to go to www.sittercity.com and see if there is anyone of interest there. I think there are other search sites like this but do not know what they are.

Hi K.,

We moved to Texas last summer and could not find a sitter. We wanted someone with experience, not the 14 year old down the street. We had always left our kids with family and were a little nervous about leaving them with just anyone. I recently found Seeking Sitters. It is a service where the girls are all at least 19 years old. I like it, it's worth checking out. www.seekingsitters.com

I feel the same way. Sometimes we drop out little one off at Adventure Kids Playcare for a few hours in the afternoon so we can have some time together. They do actually have late night hours, but I prefer to keep my son on his schedule and be in bed by 8pm. The location in Flower Mound is just around the corner from the Sonoma Grill, so it's easy to drop him off and get a nice relaxing early dinner at a very nice restaurant. There is a location in west Plano too if that's easier. I know I'll have to trust a sitter someday, but for now I feel more relaxed when he is with them just because there are a lot of adults supervising and you can be sure there are enough people to handle emergencies.

I have a now 12 yr old girl. I started looking for sitters by being out in the neighborhood parks, walking a lot and being outside. When I would see a girl about babysitting age, I would ask her and her parents. We had some great sitters that way. For the last year I've have had a sitter who has a younger sister and when older sis went to college, younger sis steps in. When older sis is home for a break, we guarantee her time to sit. The older sister stays overnight at our home to watch our daughter and pets so I can take the rare quick trip with hubby. I met these sisters via our neighborhood website which has a private section for girls who want to be sitters to advertise sitting services.

I tried a route by advertising at the local community college and the girl we got there seemed perfect but in the end (after an overnight visit) I believe my 12 yr old was more mature than the 20 yr old. I decided to stick wih my neighborhood kids where I at least know some background and the parents.

Good luck!

Dear K.,
Hi! I hired a girl to help me with my almost two year old and newborn. My MIL had just passed away and I was in a scramble trying to find someone to help me. I then had several phone calls for references, she even brought me papers to fill out for her internship to work with children at the Plano Child Advocacy Center. I filled out the paper work, gave her great references because I truly believed in her as a caregiver and thought she was an amazing person. Since going out on a limb for her she doesn't return my phone calls or emails. The person I thought was amazing is named Erin Baxter.
I don't know of anyone I can trust after this experience. I always wanted my children to just have one person that cared for them.... I am deeply hurt esp. after going out on a limb for her and never to have heard back from the times I have called and emailed her.
If you find someone you trust and is responsible please let me know.
Many Thanks,
D.

P.S.
We would love a night out here and there.
