My kids are 7,11,13. They choose what they wear. Most mornings in the early Fall and early Spring, I see them open the door, stand outside for about 15 seconds then come back in. They then choose to take a sweatshirt or not.

They are still wearing shorts and t-shirts to school...and occasional sweatshirts/sweater after their "15 second weather determination test." There have been a few days they have come home and told me they were cold at school. I never tell them what to do. I just ask them what they plan to do the next day to solve their dilemma.

I grew up in San Juan Capistrano, how funny. On Los Rios street.
Anyways...we just wore shorts and short sleeve shirts and sometimes had a light jacket.
It was 42 this morning (I think) where I live and my boys walked out of the house in shorts, short sleeve shirts, and sweatshirts. It will reach a high of about 60 today and my boys will have their sweatshirts off when they get home.

Dress in layers. If your child is OK with shorts in morning then shorts are OK. Child can wear a hoody, sweat shirt or light jacket in morning. Be sure his name is in it because he will likely leave it on the playground from time to time.

Well per the temps here:
shorts/t-shirt/hoody jacket.
Later when it is hot: take off the jacket.

I usually leave it up to my kids.
They dress themselves by now.
And have preferences.
One of my kids is not the type to get too cold, but gets hot. For example. And visa versa.

Here, the low temps are in the 60's. But, where I live, it can get into the 50's at night. But day, per the season, it can be in the 80's.
The low temps here are in the morning and night. Per the season.
Not year round of course.

I guess you'd have to define "cold" and "hot." Where I live, cold is under 30 degrees and hot is over 80, so we're not going to see cold and hot in the same day.

If it helps, my kids wear shorts to school most days now, when it's in the 40's in the morning and 60 - 70 in the afternoon. They throw hoodies in their bags to appease me but they don't really wear them even in the morning.

If you really are in CA, I would assume that your definition of cold and mine are not the same. Anything as low as 40s is fine for shorts if that's what they like. One of my boys will wear shorts into the 30s.

My kids will often wear shorts until it drops below freezing, then they switch to long pants. I tell them to step outside before they get dressed so they can decide what they want to wear. They will wear t-shits, layered with hoodies and maybe a windbreaker.

I think it largely depends on your region. Here in the Midwest I'm in shorts when it's above freezing ;-)

For fall mornings I usually dress my kids in very lightweight pants or shorts, a t-shirt, and a hooded sweatshirt. They never complain about being too cold.

Layer. My 11 year old loves wearing shorts to school & will do so even when I consider it too cold . I gave up on that battle & figure , if he's cold, that's his problem.

Layers. Sometimes DD will go to school in shorts. Sometimes not. If your child is young, don't make it complicated. Jeans, a tshirt and a light jacket or hoodie will be good.

Layers--short sleeve shirt with a long sleeve shirt, sweater, or sweatshirt over the top.

Shorts or capris or leggings or jeans that can be rolled up--kind of depends on how much time they will be outside before it warms up. Sometimes athletic type pants that can easily be pulled on and off over a pair of shorts.

Tennis shoes--closed toed shoes are required at both our elem school an daycare.

A light jacket--today both kids wore the zip out linings from their winter coats.

Maybe a pair of light gloves.

I let the kids choose from normal fall type clothes. Like long sleeve tees or short sleeve tees, knit pants, jeans, etc...and they wear a hoody over their shirt if they want. Then they can take the hoody off later in the day.

By September 30 all shorts and tank tops are stored either in the give away tub or washed and put up for next spring.

Here in Florida its the hot outside and the air conditioning inside. So short or pants are fine either way and then a sweater at all times. Some times though the way the a/c gets bad inside she will wear her shorts but wear a long sleeve shirt.

I had a cut off date. No shorts after Halloween. No short before Easter break. Our house was small so I had to pack up out of season clothes in the garage.
