I got my daughter a chiahuahua for Christmas and have been waiting to get her fixed until I had the money which will be early next month. We got Lilly a neutered male playmate to keep her company while we are at work and school. My question is how do you know a male dog has really been neutered? Lilly went into heat about a wek ago. Her little female parts are all swollen up and her nipples are sticking out. Is this normal for her being in heat or was I lied to and the male not fixed. I have always had cats and been able to fix them right away. Lilly is not acting any different but everything on her female wise is just hugh. I have never seen anything like it. I dont want puppies. How do I know the male was fixed with out going to a vet

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for filling me in. As soon as Lilly is out of heet she will be getting fixed.

If he has been fixed then you cannot see his little things hanging. If you can still see his parts hanging, then he is not fixed. But also, male dogs even after they are neutered still try to do it. They are typical males. Also, if he was fixed within a month, then it is possible that he can still get her pregnant.

Females come into heat regardless of any intact males in their genral vecinity. He should have small or no testicles in his scrotum depending on his age when he was neutered.

If he is truly neutered, he won't have any testicles.

Neutering on a male removes the testicles altogether, while spaying on a female is like a hysterectomy....removal of female reproductive parts, just like on a human.

The intact female will still go into heat, regardless of any animal around; it's just going to do that, until you spay her. I would spay her as soon as possible, to avoid any potential problems.

Hi W.
To make sure that he is fixed just look down below and make sure there is no balls. They (2) would be a sack between the back legs. Yes, it is very normal for the female dog to be all red and swollen in her area with her nipples sticking out it tells the other dogs along with the smell that she is ready and welling.

I own a Chihuahua and a Pinhuahua along with 2 other dogs, 2 cats and about 8 other miscellaneous creatures - it was disturbing the first time my unaltered female came into heat, but yes that is completely normal.

As for how to know that a male dog is truly neutered - they won't have testicles.

If you have questions go to the website listed below there is a description of the neutering process...with pictures.

Now that I have finished reading the other responses I want to suggest that you do official research if you want more information, there is a lot of misinformation being given here

Female dogs always swell, some more than others, while in heat. My Shitzu swelled so bad that her poor bottom was practically dragging the ground when she walked. I have never seen a dog swell that bad before. I think it was because it was her first heat too.

Male dogs have all of the same body parts male humans have so if the dog has something to pee out of but no accessories behind then he has been fixed. (that is the least vulger way I could think to explain)

Look under his tail if his sack is full he has not been fixed. If it is empty or gone he as been fixed.
On another note, you need to go to the pet store for female dog belt and pads or you are about to have a mess on your hands. Sounds like your female is just getting ready to be in heat. I don't know about your type of breed, but most dogs I think go in heat about every 6 months.

Any vet should be able to tell you whether he is or not without charging a fee (if that's your concern), or even the local animal shelter. I'm not sure about chihuahuas specifically, but for the most part, if he's got em, you'll see em. If not, you can do a feel around, and see if you can find a couple of raisin to marble sized nodes. As for a female in heat, oh yeah, that's typical. So's the blood :} We had a female cat that kept trying to "back into" my young girls...

The way to tell if he has been neutered is farely easy flip him over and if he still has his testicles he has not been neutered if he doesn't than he has. As far as the female when they go into heat they swell and their nipples stick out and usually they will bleed from their little female parts. With her being a small dog the blood may not be real noticeable. If she was bigger you would have alot of blood. The reason I know is I have raised mini. schnauzers and now have a neutered bichon and a female boston terrier. If you hsve any other questions just message me. Good Luck.

W.,

When the female is in heat she will swell and bleed. You can purchase doggie diapers to prevent stains all over your home. A female can be spayed while she is in heat, and there are various low-cost clinics that will do this for you. Call your local humane society for the name and number of a low cost spay/neuter clinic near you.

A neutered male no longer has testicles. If your male dog has testicles, he is not neutered.

I think you mis-understand why a female goes into heat. You need to think of her as human for a minute. You still have menstral cycles and so does she. The first heat is known as a silent heat with very small signs of heat. After that it is noticeable. Many times the male will still react to the heat even if fixed. This is controlled by the test. produced from smelling the ferimones in the air. But to answer your question, I don't think you will be able to know for sure that he is fixed short of the absence of a sack and balls. I hope this helps. You could put a phone call into the local Petsmart and ask the on duty Vet for more details.

When a male dog has been neutered he will have no testicles. That is a for sure way that he is fixed. I'm not sure about being in heat for a female, because I have only had male dogs. Hope this helps.

first of all how old is your female? if she is about 6 to 10 months old yes she will come into heat and yes thats normal for her to swell up down there and she will bleed the first 7 to 10 days and most of the time she won't let a male mount her during that time, the first week is o.k. but the next two weeks are critical to any dog. How old is the male? you should be able to see if he has been neutered he won't have any testicles on the back side all so he will act funny around her if he has not been neutered trying to mount her all the time, I raise Mini-Snauzers have a male and female a.k.c.. good luck

For the female it is normal. Dogs go into heat 2 times a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. On the male you can ask the last owner who the vet that did the neutered and give a call.

I just had to giggle a wee bit when I read this.... When a male dog is neutered his testicles are removed...so if there are no testicles he was neutered. Lilly is probably just coming into her first heat....dogs do this with or with out a mate around. Just like you have your cycle whether or not a male is around. Hope this helps.

When a male dog is nuetered, they remove his testicles. If he does not have testicles he is nuetered. The symptoms that the female is showing are typical for a female in heat and will go away once she has completed the cycle

We also have a female chihuahua and she looks the same way as yours when she comes in heat. It is normal. Male dogs that have been neutered will have no testicles.

Sorry to sound so crude but if he has been fixed then you can see he has no balls. When a male animal is fixed they remove his testicles.

Thats normal for a dog in heat. If you wanna make sure the male has been neutered, its as simple as looking between his legs...if he has been, then there will be nothing there....lol
