The air in your house is too dry. If you have a humidifier or vaporizer, use it. If not, you could just put a pot/bowl of water out.

Hi C.,

The air is too dry. Some ways to raise the humidity are: open your windows for 2-3 hours on warmer days (shut off the heat when you do this), buy or make a tabletop fountain (be sure to keep the water clean), get a plastic spray bottle fill it with water and once or twice a day go around and spritz the water into the air, you could buy a humidifier, and... turn the temp down a pinch on your dryer (laundry) and maybe shorten the length of time you dry your laundry (laundry should NOT come out of the dryer stuck together making little sparks when pulled apart). Over-drying laundry is very common and contributes significantly to static electricity.

Sometimes, people think static electricity is coming from overly dry air but it's not and can be caused by the house not being properly grounded. You could have an electrician come in and test to make sure your house is well grounded.

Hope this helps,
E.

You have static electricity because the air is too dry.

The easiest way to get rid of it is to put moisture back into the air. Try running a humidifier. You may find that if your house is particularly dry, you may need several humidifiers especially when running the heat in winter months. There are two kinds of humidifiers - warm and cool. I don't really like warm mist because children can get burned if they touch the mist, only the area immediately around the humidifier gets moisture, and warm water is more like to breed bacteria (so more frequent cleaning is necessary).

you can also wipe your tv and computer screens with a USED dryer sheet. Use fabric softener and dryer sheets when doing laundry, and wear natural clothing (synthetics carry more static than fabrics like cotton)

Edit: If a humidifier isnt in your immediate budget, you can also put water mixed with a little fabric softner and spray your household fabrics... furniture, carpets, curtains, etc. you can also boil water in a large pot in the stove. Sometimes I find I need to boil water even with the humidifier.

I run humidifiers in my house and we do not have static electricity. You can get a little humidistat at Walmart and it isn't too expensive, about 2.00. It will tell you if you are in comfort zone or if it is too humid or dry. It also helps our health.

Run a humidifier for a few days. That should help. Take fabric softener sheets and just lightly rub across any surface that seems to be having the most electricity. That should knock it out in a few days.

I have heard that it is due to dry conditions. Try using a house humidifier and see if that helps. B. E.

I was hoping someone would have answered so I would know! We have it so badly here in KY. I've gone from wearing socks and house shoes so I don't shock myself everytime I touch my computer! Best of luck and I'll be checking back!

I usually keep large pot of water on the stove. I usually bring it to a boil then turn it down on low. I let it go for usually at least an hour. I do this a couple times a day. If the heater is running a lot I do it more. The other option is to ge a humidifer. If you go with this option use distilled water. Tap water has minerals and stuff in it that will make the part that warms the water all crusty. It smells terrible and is very hard to clean.

C.,
The electricity is caused by the dry air from the heater in your home. I hate that so we installed a humidifier on our furnace, but there are other things you can do, like putting bowls of water near the heater vents, plus they make humidifiers of different sizes that you can buy. Not really sure about the prices of them though.
I hope this helps,
