How Can I Get My Oven Fixed in Elk Grove Without Getting Ripped Off?

Hi Moms,

I have a gas GE oven that came with my house (so I don't know how exactly old it is, but it's definitely not very old), and although the burners work fine, the oven just plain stopped working. It's completely cold as well as dead silent, so no sound or smell of gas. I have a bad record at finding repairmen (I recently got ripped off on simple plumbing fixes and I'm still livid about that!!) My handy dad and not-so-handy husband have poked around in the oven, but since it involves gas, we really want someone in the know to really go at it. Any suggestions? I just don't know who to trust who will fix it safely but won't rip me off. Thanks in advance!!!

What can I do next?

I have a great repairman that I highly recommend. I have used him 4 times and my friends use him also. He knows the equipment and can get the job done. He lives in Elk Grove - his name is Nick with S & S Appliance Service. His number is ###-###-####. He does charge a travel charge - to fix my oven was around $125 - but 3 years later it is great!

Call me with any ? - M. H. in Elk Grove

A friend of mine has a friend who is in the repair business, and I have used his company several times and recommended him to friends and have never had a problem. Always honest, which to me is the most important thing. His website:

I had a problem with my washing machine last year and called Sears home repair. Although the appliance wasn't purchased thru them - they will still service them. I found them to be very responsive and honest in regards to the cost; service call etc...and knew that if there was a problem - they are a legitimate company who stands behind their service. Good Luck!

Hi L.,
Always check anyone you are planning to hire thru the Better Business Bureau. The Website is bbb.org
The other advice I can give you is to get at least 2 estimates and go with your gut.

Call the gas company. At least they can come out and check to be sure there are no leaks in the walls or outdoors. It may need a new starter. The starter on my gas stove is electric because it saves on gas. My stove is 2 years old. If yours is only a few year old it can be that it only needs an electric starter.

I had this problem years ago. It is probably the thermal couple (sp?) that ignites the stove. You would not smell gas. This can also happen to a hot water tank or boiler/furnace. It will cost you about $150 or so, plus about an hour of labor time. Mine was about 7 years ago and cost $128. I also had a 90 day warranty from the repair company. If you are quoted more than $200, you might want to consider a new stove. I also suggest checking the better business bureau for a rating.
