House Plants

I dont' remember where I've seen them, but you can buy these grates that you put over the dirt and around the base of the plant. This way it can still breath and you can still water them, but the little fingers can't get in.

Are you kidding? :) I gave up on houseplants years ago... It's all I can do to keep the kids and the pets taken care of... Any time you have something toddler level, they will get into it. Other than getting on to her every time she plays in the dirt, I don't have a solution. I would just avoid the entire hassle and move the plant...

Is there anyway you could put it in a plant stand that could not be easily tipped? On top of a table? On the window sill? Another room? Would putting it in a bigger outer pot make it harder to access the dirt?

You can get a large enough piece of cloth to cover. A circular one would probably be better but does not have to be. Place the plant in the center of the cloth and pull the sides up, tie with a pretty ribbon but not too tight to cut into the plant. You can coordinate the cloth to your decor.

Give the plant to a friend or relative until your child is 7!

I got a play gate enclosure and put it around my plants for inside.
When I put my plants out on the deck, the squirrels were burying things in the pots and throwing the dirt every where. I got some cloth screening, cut some squares of it big enough to hold over the pots with big rubber bands/bungee cords, cut slits in them for the stems/trunks, and that guarded the dirt fairly well while allowing easy watering.

I like the baby gate around the plants idea...
OR
You could put the plants up higher so you can keep them in the same place. On a microwave stand maybe... just tall enough to keep plants out of reach but also sturdy enough that the baby can't tip the table over.

I have had house plants for years and many are sentimental to me.
