Hot Sleeper

Hey ladies,
I have a two year old little girl. Occasionally but not consistently she has terrible night sweats. On the hot nights I usually let her sleep in just a t-shirt. I check and make sure there is no fever her extremities get warm but not hot. Has anyone had any experiences like this? I just want to make sure that I am not over-looking something. Should I give her anything before bed? What should I or what could I be doing for her? Does anyone know why this happens? I would appreciate any feedback.

What can I do next?

Hi there,
I've been a toddler teacher and professional nanny for 25 years and this is a very normal thing with toddlers and other people. I have a little "charge" who sleeps in only a diaper and has a fan going all night and that's comfortable for her where it would be too cool for some. At two, she's able to pull covers up over herself if she's too chilly so it's okay to dress her scantily and let her use the oovers if she wants/needs them.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter does the same thing. I sometimes will put her hair up at night--I think the hair on her neck makes her hotter and sweat more. I do always put at least a light blanket on her though so she doesn't get chilled, even though her head sweats, I know I don't get good sleep if I don't have a blanket on. Hope this helps!

I am a 37yr old SAHM with fantastic 8yr old girl. I personally have had night sweats since I was a baby. I still do on occasion. I have had blood, thyroid, and every other kind of test you can do on a person done, and I am 100% healthy. There are nights when I get up to go to the rest room and I look like I just got out of the shower! I don't have a magical "answer" for you, but if it helps, there is nothing wrong with me, I'm just a sweaty sleeper. My daughter is also, but only every once and a while. My advise would be to keep doing what you are doing, as long as all her checkups have been normal, your baby is fine.

C.,
My daughter was the same way. She is now 19 & has great metabolism! She still gets pretty warm when she sleeps but not like she did when she was younger. To put your mind at ease, check with the Dr. But, my daughter's father was the same way and both can pretty much eat whatever they want without gaining any weight! Not fair!
Have a good weekend!

Hi C.,
My 2.5 yr old is also a sweater. Not only at night, but all day long. He's constanty wet. I mentioned it to our pediatrician and she didnt seemed worried about it. He's full of energy, from the time he wakes up in the morning till he goes to bed at night. Looks like from the responses that its a semi-normal thing. If you do find an answer please let us know.
Good luck and have a great day.

My daughter, my father, and I all are very hot natured. We sweat some nights in our sleep because we just get too hot. It is just the way we are. I wouldn't even think to worry unless she actually did have a fever.

I have never asked. Now I know that we are not alone. I am like the moms whos child starts to sweat right before they go to sleep. He sweats alot of the night. Only undies and kicks off the cover. No worries. ;)

I noticed the same thing with my now 9 month old son.... so when he stopped needing to be swaddled at night I let him sleep in just a diaper with a light blanket. I also keep a box fan blowing toward his bed, not right on it, just enough to keep a breeze. Most nights he kicks off the blanket and ends up just sleeping in a diaper with no blanket whatsoever. The way I look at it is if he gets cold in the middle of the night he will wake up. you might try the same thing with your daughter. just let her go to sleep with panties on and a fan blowing on her. maybe a light sheet? Dont be alarmed if you go in to wake her up in the morning and her body is cool to the touch if she slept without waking then the cool didnt bother her. another important fact to consider.... cold does not cause illness GERMS do. so dont worry about her getting cold and getting sick... cold doesnt cause illness. And everybodys internal thermometer is unique. you may feel cold and uncomfortable sleeping when it seems cold but to your daughter it may not be cold..... best of luck

Your daughter sounds like both my 10 year old and my husband. Be prepared for a "messy" sleeper as they'll kick off the covers at night. (Doesn't help me, however, who's always COLD at night. Hence, the ritual "fight-for-the-covers" that ensues.)

Both my "hot" sleepers are greatful for ceiling fans.

Children are naturally hot natured because their bodies are so small it doesn't take much to keep them warm. My sons, especially my 5 yr old, sweat like crazy when they sleep. They always have, so they sleep in just underwear. If I put a shirt on them the neck is soaking wet when they wake up. Also I put the ceiling fan on for them and that usually helps cool them down. Even with both those they still wake up sometimes with wet hair.

Just like the other posters said...I don't think that there is anything to worry about. My almost 3 year old daughter is the same way. Nap time...bed time...it doesn't matter...she sweats...and her head is SOAKING wet all the time. I just figure she is like her father. I call him "my little microwave" because he puts off so much heat! It's nice in the winter...but get away from me in the summer! *lol*

My daughter sweats like a man in her sleep (she's 2 1/2). It's pretty gross, but there isn't a whole lot I can do about it other than wash the sheets often. I'm not sure what causes it, but I don't think it's anything to be concerned about.

Both my boys, 3 and 6, have always been hot sleepers. In fact, I know when they are tired because they start sweating right before they fall asleep. They sleep in underwear unless they are playing dress up with the super hero pj's. My six year old is much less sweaty than he used to be. I guess he is growning out of it.

Our daughter is the exact same way. Needless to say, it saves us a bundle on fleece/flannel pjs. ;~)

We leave a fan on in our little girl's room and then just put a light blanket on her. She sleeps in a nightgown now (just turned 4). Most of the time, we use a large sheet and double it. That gives her more coverage than just a single sheet and yet it's not too hot. Of course, our daughter is older so I wouldn't advise you to do that just yet.

I don't have anything really to say but I wanted to let you know that this isn't uncommon. Good luck.

No worries C.!

My daughter is now 9yo and has been like this since she was born. She wakes up with her hair just stuck to her face and all. She now sleeps in just her panties and sometimes a tee, but usually not. Just keep you daughter in cool clothes during the night, a light blanket, and turn over her pillow if you come in to check on her.

Everyone's temp rises when we sleep. Some more than others. It's normal. Unless you see other things going on, I wouldn't worry about it.

The largest and most predictable amount of growth hormone released by our bodies is about an hour after we go to sleep. Hormones and growth create mass amounts of heat which may be part of the reason your daughter is so hot at night. At two she is probably growing by leaps and bounds!

She may also have a high metabolism that continues to burn while she sleeps (lucky girl!). I wouldn't worry but mention it at your daughter's next regular check up or call your pediatrician's office to speak with a nurse.

Happy sleeping!

Hey. My little one gets all sweaty when she sleeps (not all the time. We always say she must have had a really go sleep because she's all sweaty.... My hubby calls her the oven because when she falls asleep on you she gets super toasty.

I think it's normal for them. I would call your Dr. and talk with him if it really seems out of the norm.

My oldest (now 6) has always gotten sweaty at night for some reason. She likes to sleep in the light silky night gowns you can find at Target (the Nick and Nora brand ones). I have to go in and cover her in the night because she always kicks her blankest off and her head is often sopping wet. My mom told me my brother was like this and it was not a problem (except having to launder sheets 3 or 4 times a week:))

My six month old wakes up with sweat on her sheet from her head. No matter the temperature in the house (I keep it at 73 at night), she seems to wake up a little sweaty. We still semi-swaddle her in a cool blanket, but she sleeps in onesies over the summer too! I have a few friends who report the same thing. I'm not sure how old kids are when that's suppose to let up though!

When she's in the tee shirt does she still get the sweats? If so, you might get her checked out just to be safe, but she is probably just hot natured. My grandson won't sleep under any covers, so he's fine in short pj sets. Sometimes, just before wake-up time, he will snuggle under cover, but that's the only time.
