Hot Dogs for a BBQ at School - Cook and Keep Warm!

My son is in first grade and he is having a bbq at school next Wednesday. I told the teacher I would provide hot dogs, because I was sure no one else would volunteer those, and no one else did. So it looks like I'm buying for the class. Which is fine.

She did ask though what I thought about pan searing them the night before and then keeping them warm in a crock pot during the morning. Would that dry them out? I'm not sure - I've never done them this way.

How would you do them so they are hot when it's time to eat?

What can I do next?

Put them right in the crock pot from the package -- add a little bit of hot water to the bottom of the crock pot and keep it on warm.
It works quite well.
The link below tells you that you don't need water, but I've found that a cup or two of hot water in the bottom makes for better dogs. They don't dry out.

we have done this for church functions. just heat them up in the morning I wouldn't do it at night. Do it before school and bring them in the crockpot. they will be fine.

Hi Mom-

I would probably just boil them...stick them in buns...wrap each in foil...and keep warm in crock!

If you have access to little ketchups and mustards, I would be inclined to wrap them with each dog for less muss and fuss.

Best Luck!

Just put them in a crockpot straight from the package and keep them warm enough to eat. Hotdogs are fully cooked when you buy them... they heating is just so that they taste good, so no need to cook them the night before.

If your son's classmates are anything like my son, they'll prefer them from the crockpot to "pan seared." Not all kids go for the darkened outside.

Put a little water at the bottom of the crockpot to keep them from drying out. They should turn out great (and your judges are 7 year olds anyway).

We either grill our dogs or boil in water. Personally, we like ours black, which boiling in water doesn't give you. Considering a lot of adults and kids don't like black dogs, I would just put water in the crock, add the dogs and heat and serve from there. They will be nice and hot and they are precooked so no big deal. Good luck and have fun!!!

I don't think it's necessary to pan sear them the night before, then you'd have to worry about temperature and all that. Depending on what time the bbq is I would just put them in the crockpot in the morning or boil them in the morning and keep them warm in the crockpot.

Nope, never done hot dogs that way.

I would cook them, then put them in their bun, then wrap them in foil and put them in a aluminum chaffing dish. Can you do it the morning of the BBQ? I know - it's a lot of work since you work as well....darn it - we need to live closer!!!

Cheryl O or Michele/Cat's ideas are right. Put them in the buns, wrap in foil and keep warm either crock or sterno.
