Hosting Church Party at Home, Need Theme Ideas

Hi Everyone, We started going to a new church in August. Every month, there is a "dinner with friends" get-together. The first one we went to was at a couples house and it was Hawaiian themed. The second was eating out at a bbq place and this month is at someones house who is having fire pits, roasted marshmallows and baking your own potato and apple in the fire.

So when it comes our turn (likely in Jan), I would like some good ideas on what we could do. I'm in AZ, so at night it will be in the 50-60's. So we could be inside and out. Mostly the parties are eating and sitting around chatting, but tends to be based on a "theme". I can't think of anything really.

Any ideas on food, games, decorations that are all easy? Thanks everyone!

FYI: We have an inground pool but its way too cold to get in it and we do have a moveable fire pit if that info helps. =)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the great ideas. It will be after the holidays so I don't really want to do any xmas stuff in January, I will be SO over the holidays by then! lol But, I love the idea of soup...maybe even a soup exchange where everyone can bring a pot of soup and we can try it out. That might be fun. And I can have some different breads and rolls to go with it. Hmmm...I will think more on that but it may be fun. Thanks everyone and keep them coming!

Feeling a little jealous about your weather since it was in the 20s this morning when I drove the kids to school. :)

How about a snowed in theme? You could put some fake snow on the tables with candles, serve hot cocoa and frozen drinks, have soups and sandwiches, and a nice fire in your fire pit. Or a New Years theme since its in January?

Last year we did a "Chinese New Year" party in late January/ early February and it was a blast and so so easy!

Chinese take-out
Black tablecloth
Red and gold paper goods
Paper lanterns, paper dragons, paper fans as decor (all at Party City)
Beer, wine and soda

It was a BLAST and pretty inexpensive. We asked the restaurant for extra cartons so people could take leftovers home, those paper placemats and chopsticks as well as copies of their menu which we taped together to make a table runner for the appetizers.

I like the Fiesta night!

Or you could do Chinese, Spanish, French, English, German, etc...I know you can cook up some amazing meals, so I'd go with a country themed dinner. Decorate and serve traditional meals. Mexican and Italian are easiest in my book!

I like the ugliest sweater idea with soup night. You could do a couple of different soups (baked potato, chili, chicken noodle, chicken enchilada, etc) with the stuff to go with them (crackers, cheese, etc). Decorate with snowmen if it's in Jan.

Well I mean it is December so I'd say go with the obvious and do a Christmas theme. Or you could do winter, snowmen or snow theme to provide a variance, but since it's a church group you're pretty much guaranteed they all celebrate Christmas.

There are so many cute snowman snacks and desserts you could do, the possibilities are endless! It would be super fun! Decorating options are also easy.

For games you could blindfold someone who is the "snowman" and have the rest of the team dress them in hats, gloves, scarf, etc. I would add as many accessories as possible and the blindfold so that the snowman doesn't know what's coming and can't help. The first team who dresses their snowman is the winner. This also might be fun since you probably won't be getting any snow in AZ this year!! :)

I think you could go to some places online like Oriental Trading Company or some other ones that you can google. You can look in their themes section and come up with tons of ideas. There are seasonal themes, holiday ones, religious ones like Easter or Christmas, all sorts.

You might also google party themes and go from there.

Disco night(bell bottom suits, short coat dresses and gogo boots),

(Disco)Make it groovy looking with beaded fringe around the bowls, and have anything popular in the 70's Party light bulbs in the rooms. Beaded curtain and Sandalwood or patchouli incense in the background. Disco music playing in the background. Game: Twister

80's night(mile high bangs and parachute pants...leggings and sweater skirts...Oh goodness the horror!)

(80's)Domino's Pizza(with a cut out of the 'Noid, California raisins in both the snack trays and dips, and a cut out of the California Raisins dancing by the tray. The greatest one hit wonders of the 80's playing in the background. Game: Pac-man

Just a couple of ideas.
