Ok, so my doctor cleared me to travel for my brother's girlfriend's baby shower (Richmond, VA) and my brother's Army Basic Training graduation (Ft. Benning, GA)! What I forgot to ask him was what information I need to have with me (copy of medical records, allergies, ect.) and if I need to look into a specific doctor, or just find a hospital in the area in case something comes up. I'm from Richmond originally, so I know what hospital I'd like to use if I need it, but I'm clueless as to where to go around Ft. Benning. Help Mamas?!?

p.s. - i'll be 30wks when I go to Richmond, and 33wks when I go to Ft. Benning.

What can I do next?

I would call the insurance and ask them..........they might know better than your doctors office since they can look at each state along the way, however you are traveling.....

I would have some sort of paperwork with you in case you are unconscious and they need info quickly. Allergies, etc........I wouldn't carry anything too important in case someone steals the information.

Good Luck and have a great time.

I agree, find out what your insurance will cover. Sometimes you can end up accidentally at a hospital your insurance will not cover or will not cover at a good rate and will end up paying much more.

Definitely check your insurance. Also, my sister is going to be traveling at 34 weeks and her doctor is making her pick up her medical records before she leaves. It maybe a good idea to get a copy of your medical records and also put a list together of your allergies and what medications you are on. I had to do an allergy and medication list for my regular hospital.

I would think that all you need to know is how far along you are. You are usually fine to travel until the 35th week or so. I was cleared to move from Japan to the UK at 30 weeks. If there have been any complications or anything though I would double check with the doctor.

I traveled throughout my entire pregnancy. Definitely check with your insurance 1) to confirm your coverage outside your "home" area and 2) locate medical facilities within your network.

I made a medical summary to keep with me while I travelled and left one in my desk at work.

On the header, I had:
Emergency contact information
Contact Information for my Midwife
Due Date
Date of Birth
Blood Type
Current medications
Allergies

Then, I kept a running summary of the results of my prenatal visits. It puts your pregnancy "history" in a short form that makes it easy for a care provider to see how your pregnancy is developing. Most recent results first.

weight
urine results
blood pressure

P.S. If you're flying, check your specific airline, but in general you can fly domestically until 35 weeks. You may want to get a note from your doctor confirming your due date.

J., will you travel by plane or car? You have to check with the airlines to see what they allow. When I was prego, some airlines would not allow you to fly in your 3rd trimester. I guess they didn't want to deliver babies. Otherwise, the Internet is your best friend here, look it up and know ahead of time where the hospitals are.

HI J.,

There are three hospitals in Columbus which is where Ft. Benning is. There is also one on the base as well. The Medical Center (center of town) is where I delivered both of my girls and at the time the only hospital that had an OB department. St Francis Hospital is now delivering babies and I hear that it is good. It's on the north side of town. Doctor's Hospital is next door to the Medical Center and I believe the only one that has a birthing pool. Doctor's has always been the "higher end" hospital. The town is easy to maneuver around so anywhere you want to go in case of an emergency should be easy to get to.

Congratulations! Hope you make it home for the delivery but if you don't I know you'll be fine!

M.
