Horrible Morning Sickness and Nausea

I am 8 weeks pregnant with my second child and am having horrible "morning" sickness. It is more like all day sickness. With my first child I was sick for 7 1/2 months, but it was just once first thing in the morning and then it never bothered me throught the rest of the day. I am able to keep most of my food down and can stay hydrated, but the horrible continuous nausea feeling won't go away and I am throwing up 1-3 times a day. I find myself eating all day and night to try to keep the feeling from being continuous, but it comes back so soon that I am eating something all the time. I only gained 23.5 lbs with my first and I am really afraid that this is going to make me pack on the pounds which I know doesn't make for a healthy pregnancy. Does anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My midwife told me to take vit. B6 and half a unisom in the morning. Worked like a charm. Dr's use unisom for Hyperemesis gravidarum (medical term for excessive vomiting of pregnant women). You can find info on unisom on wikipeda. The standard treatment in most of the world is Benedictin (also sold under the trademark name Diclectin), a combination of doxylamine succinate and vitamin B6. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperemesis_gravidarum

Other than talking to your OB and getting put on meds (which is what I ended up doing since I was losing so much weight. Zofran was/is a huge blessing), there are lots of things you can try first. Ginger helped a fair amount, whether in ginger ale/beer or just candied ginger. What I used the most was lemon. For some reason, fresh lemon seems to help with morning sickness. The smell alone helped me some, and I almost always put a wedge of lemon in my water. For a couple of weeks, I lived on homemade lemonade of 3 cups water, 1/4 lemon, and 2 tsp sugar. The sugar seemed to help the heartburn the lemon was giving me. Peppermint tea also helped a lot with the nausea, but it made my heartburn way worse. Good luck.

For me, sucking on lemon drops or ginger drops really helped. Jolly Ranchers were my best friend. :)

Eat very small amounts throughout the day... almost like grazing. Find things that you can keep down.

Ginger tea worked really well for me... iced. Don't like ginger? You can try Peppermint but NO chamomile!
Also, Vitamin B-6 helps with nausea.

I am 100% with Kathie on the Zofran. I had really bad "all day sickness" with 3 of my pregnancies, and nothing in the holistic aisle was working for me. I tried ginger tea, whatever that Hyland's holistic losenge is, etc. Finally, my doc prescribed Zofran, and it was great. Ask you OB for it by name, I'm sure he or she will write you for it.

I also had bad morning sickness/nausea plus migraines with BOTH my pregnancies. Nothing I did helped.

However, per my OB/GYN.... I had acupuncture done. And, it STOPPED it right then. All it took was one session, for a half hour. And it never came back for the remainder of my pregnancy. I did this with both my pregnancies.

Of course, you should see an professional Acupuncturist who is trained at treating pregnant women.

But, this was a WONDERFUL treatment for me. It does not hurt either, not at all.

Good luck and take care,

I know this is going to sound crazy but try peanut butter on toast in the morning. it worked for me with my son. Do not add jelly or honey to it as the sweet will probably make you sick. they sell nausea lollipos and you can go to a nutrition store and ask what natural things you can take for nausea. it is not fun to have that feeling at all. I had it my entire pregnancies with all 4 of my kids. I have heard about ginger and other things that really work. Keep drinking the water and try and walk everyday in the fresh air. that might help too.

good luck!!

I had the "all day sickness" with both of my kids for the first five months of pregnancy. The best advice I can give you is before you get out of bed, sit up slowly and eat a soda cracker to help settle your stomach. Avoid perfumes and any other smells that may trigger the nausea. Also, I used prego pops and they work wonders. They are a lollipop that are for nausea.. they were invented for patients on chemotherapy that had nausea. You can buy them at www.pregopops.com and motherhood maternity/consignment shops.

Hope this helps!

I had the same thing in all 4 of my pregnancies. Its horrible. My doctor gave me a pill called Zofran ODT. You put it under your tongue and it disolves instantly. It takes away the nausea and the vomitting for 8 hours! It was amazing and with my last 2 pregnancies I don't know how I would have made it without. Its so hard to chase after kids when your head is in the toilet. Good Luck!

I found frozen grapes worked great for me to help combat the nausea. Every time I felt sick I would have a couple. Also watermelon was really good cold. Both helped a lot, and weren't to calerie heavy.
Good luck

Yep. I had all day nausea throughout my 2nd pregnancy. Crazy. I only gained 12 pounds (and gave birth to a healthy and beautiful (almost) 8 pound baby girl at full term). What worked best for me was eating 6-8 tiny meals a day. The nausea seemed worse when I got felt hungry. I stuck to a high protein diet and always combined neutralizing carbs if I had something acidic like OJ. I also noticed that some foods just never sat well with me during my pregnancy. Nuts, popcorn... If I was having a particularly finicky day, I ate simple foods (nothing processed).
