Hey everyone,
I am a homeschooling mom. I currently use the Abeka program. I am and am not happy with it. (if that makes sense) It is all I have every used so my thinking is that maybe there is something else out there. I have a daughter that is going into the 5th grade. I want to go to a DVD program or a CD rom program. I would love any help I could get. My dear husband is SO much help. (NOT) He says that he knows what every I use will be great.
Thanks for all your help
M.

So What Happened?

We have found our new program. Thank you everyone for your wonderful advice. It really helped me in deciding what to use. We stepped out and have gone with Switched on School house. So far so good!

Hello, I have three children 10,8, and 3. I use the alpha-omega
curriculum they have several different options. Switched on school house is one of the computer programs that we use. I have a friend who has always used abeka and is changing to this curriculum. I have been very pleased. Go to www.aop.com they will send you a catolog to look through if you want one. Also I order my curriculum from a different site because it is the cheapest I have found www.schoolhousesource.com if you have any questions you can email me ____@____.com

Hi M.,

I've been homeschooling my 2 kids since Kindergarten & have been using K12 curriculum over the last 3 & love it. www.k12.com it's worth looking at & is user friendly. It is not a classical education like www.classicalconversations.com, but the kids & i have loved it. There is a LOT my 4th grader can do on his own or on the computer. I still walk my 1st grader through most of it... I commend you on staying home - it's a blessing most people don't realize!

M., I'm a homeschooling mom of five, from 16 to a newborn. It's so challenging, isn't it? My issue with A Beka centers around that it's geared toward a classroom with all the busy-work to boot. Now, it has its strengths, such as reading and grammar.

Personally, I like an amalgam of the Classical Christian-Charoltte Mason approaches. These use quality literature and original sources. Google "Tapestry of Grace" for more information.

Another thing that's been a godsend to my family is our homeschool co-op. Email me privately or see my website at www.goodshepherdhomeschool.org for information. There are several options in our community. I'm happy to tell you more if you'll send me a private message.

Hi M.. I believe there is a home school department in the Crossroads book store located at the corner of Grelot and Hillcrest and there is a home school mother who works there and can answer questions regarding home schooling programs and curriculums.

Hi M.!
I just started a new e-group to network all the homeschoolers in the area. If you'd like to join and post your question there, I know you'll get a lot of support! Just send a blank e-mail to ____@____.com

Personally, we would probably be considered unschoolers or eclectic, since we use a wide variety of resources, from audio-visual DVD's and TV programming, plus hands-on. I normally take a look at the grade level suggested knowledge areas through the World Book website, then have resources on hand to facilitate those skills.

Hope you'll join the group, and let me know if you'd like more info on our approach!

Sincerely,
D.

M.,

I am swamped presently with visiting family, but I so want to offer my input. I am a home education veteran of 16 years and think I have been around a bunch of good ideas...

When you have time...tell me what you have learned from these responses you have already received so I can get a feel for which direction to point you to research.

Blessings for encouraging direction!

I started homeschooling when we moved here from Idaho almost 4 months ago. The two programs I would suggest is K12, can go to k12.com and also Alpha Omega. We use Alpha Omega because doing K12 was too expensive for us and we are very happy with Alpha Omega. In Idaho there's Virtual Academy, free to residents, they use K12 and it's web based and Alpha Omega has
CD's which we will use next time called SOS. We like the AO because it's Christian based, but if you end up using K12 or any other cirriculum you can always incorporate God into your teaching.

I have homeschooled for 13 years. I have come to like ABEKA for grades K-3 but then switch to a mix and match after that. Switched On School House has a CD program. You might try one class as a CD, for example science or history, and see how your child likes it. I think Bob Jones used to have a VHS program but I am not sure what they have now. Also, HSLDA has a whole list of online, correspondance and CD programs. You might try their website. Hope this helps.

I'm homeschooling my son since they wanted to make him repeat the 7th grade. I found a group here in Madison/Hsv that didn't have all the restrictions that the other groups had and it was way cheaper than the others. When I reviewed all the curriculum options, I decided on an online one called S.O.S. Then I had the option of having it overseen by a moniter or grading him myself. I chose to let the online teacher do his grades. It's way easier than having to handle all this myself.
