Hives - Dinuba,CA

My daughter woke up with hives one morning really bad, only I didn't know it was hives . I took her to the doctor and he said she had the worst case of chicken pox he'd ever seen. He advised baking soda paste and benedryl.
There wasn't a single bump on her the next morning. And yes, she took the pink ones.
Don't be mad at your husband.
I would take your child to the doctor because your son shouldn't be just having hives for a week for no reason.
Like I said, my doctor said chicken pox which made sense since she had been exposed, but chicken pox don't go away with a day of antihistamines.
Pink or no pink, there is something going on that isn't being helped by benadryl and you should have your son seen.
It's not worth trying to figure out on your own.

if any part of his face is swollen, especially the lips, you should go to the ER or call 911. My brother had his lips swell from a reaction. Mom drove him to the ER and the dr. yelled at her for not calling 911. Lips swelling could lead to breathing problems.

If you haven't already, take him to the doctor now. Please!!

I'm not sure what could be causing this but, if his face is swelling, I would be concerned. When they get bad enough, hives can actually impair breathing (anaphylaxis) so keep a very close eye on him and maybe even get him into a doctor for a steroid shot ASAP.

You should take him to the Doctor.
Because... it may just be a coincidence with the Benadryl.

Or, try giving him kids Claritin. Instead of Benadryl.
That's what I use. And it does not cause drowsiness.

Hives can be from anything. And just guesswork unless you pinpoint conclusively, what is causing it.

AND he is swelling.... this is NOT good. You need to take him to the Doctor.

My Daughter for example, is allergic to Kiwi fruit. It is HIGHLY dangerous in some people. And anything related to Kiwi, can also pose allergic reactions. Doctors know this.

Your Son's hives... seems pretty bad.
I would take him to the Doctor, AND since the Benadryl does not seem to help nor solve it.
I can't imagine taking Benadryl, since it causes drowsiness in some kids... and then him having to go to school, in that state of drowsiness.... for example.

Hi C., so you gave him the Benadryl BECAUSE he had hives? And they're not going away and getting worse? Or you give him Benadryl regularly for some other reason?

To me this would be a call to the pediatritian's office, especially swelling of lips and eye lids.

My daughter has had hives since she was a baby and she is now 8. When she gets hives I give her Zyrtec Hives Relief and I rub Aveeno Anti Itch Cream all over the hives. My experience is that she only gets hives if she eats something she is allergic to. One time when she had hives continually and I could not get rid of them after a week, I finally figured out I had accidentally changed the laundry detergent to Tide (the WORST detergent for hives on the planet). We use All Free and Clear. It sounds like your son needs a good allergy specialist. I would take him in right away with those symptoms since my daughter has an Epi pen for school and home but I have not had to use it yet. Think about any changes in his diet or your home environment - laundry soap, shower gel, etc..

Just double checking you're sure it's not chicken pox? None of us ever got a fever with chicken pox, just itched to high heaven / were completely miserable.

Same token, I developed a watermelon allergy when I was 9 pretty much out of the blue. If it IS allergies, I think you're dead on that it's something he's eaten OR has been holding. Hands to mouth, hands to eyes. What else besides the benedryl has he been touching / eating for the past week that is different from 2 weeks ago?

Buy some that aren't pink and give them a try. Does she take Benedryl everyday? Other than the hives is she feeling OK? Benedryl usually makes one sleepy/sluggish and there are other antihistamines that work better.

My 13 year old had this when she was 5 and we thought it was a reaction gto the guinea pig she brought home from school. About 2 months ago(8 years later) it happened again. It hurt her to walk her feet were so swollen. The only thing she did different was used a deep cleansing soap and immediately her armpits began itching and then her whole body. The Dr. said sometimes this happens before they get sick and sure enough she had the flu a week later. I've heard other parents talking about this at school too. I would call your sons nurse and let her know that his face is swollen and maybe he can be seen but make sure you tell the receptionist to have her call immediately because I have waited hours for calls back. I'm glad your son is feeling better. Just something that struck me while reading your post--I think 60 lbs is the cut-off for EpiPen Jr, then the child needs to move up to the regular adult-dose Epi. My almost 9 year old has to have an EpiPen on hand for nut allergies, and his Dr. prescribed the regular adult one for him (my daughter has an Epi Jr). If your son has allergies that might necessitate using the EpiPen, please make sure the dose will be enough to do the job--you might want to run this by your doctor next time you go in (or maybe I just have a giant 9 year old). : ) Good luck!

Please take your child to the emergency room immediately! Swollen lips and eye lids are severe. There is no way you should have waited a week. Go now.
