The thing is that I have been having problems with my hip since January. I can't seem to get the help I need. I don't know what to do. I have 3 small children and my husband. The problem with all this is I now am a stay home mom (which I do Love) but now I don't know what to do about my hip. None of the doctors are seeming to help. I need advice. If things don't look up soon, I think my happy life at home may become very "stressful"

What can I do next?

Without knowing what kind of hip problems you're having, I don't really know what to say. I had hip problems when I was pregnant, and after the baby was born I went to the chiropractor and her fixed everything very quickly. But then I have scoliosis and my hip problems were more than likely caused by the baby pushing on my already crooked spine and hips.

The hip problems I faced during and after birth of my 3 kiddos has gone away since I started going to a tonal chiropractor regularly. I always thought they were about popping your back and stuff like that but he actually keeps my body aligned so it is a naturally healing mechanism as God intended it to be. I don't have the hip problems and many other health problems anymore. His name is Dr. Ky Carlson and he is in the Woodlands off of 1488.

I have a fabulous chiropractor that has absolutely changed my life! He is not they bone-cracking kind (I really don't know a whole lot about typical chiropractors, only what I've heard), but has a different non-invasive technique that works miracles!

I went through knee pain for 15 years.. It started when I was about 10 & I spent so much time & money in different doctors' offices, and all they could tell me was that I was too young to have the type of joint issues I did and they had no idea why. I even went so far as to have hyulauric acid injections in my knees. This procedure is horribly painful (it honestly reminded me of my C-section w/o enough drugs), and then I had an awful allergic reaction to them. I was determined to find some kind of answer/cure; I was NOT going to live with bad knees forever (I was only 25 at this time).
One of my friends told me about Dr. Sones in The Woodlands. I tell you- he has absolutely changed my life! I have only had 2 or 3 episodes since I started seeing him 2 years ago. Even at that, those episodes were not nearly as bad as they had been, when I couldn't walk, couldn't hardly even move because it hurt so bad. I was on 10 different prescriptions- for allergies, a mild anti-depressant, and the meds for my knees. I went off all of them a month after I started seeing him and have not looked back.
Not sure where you're at, but I live near Willowbrook & it is definitely worth the drive for me. Best of luck! Hope you feel better soon.
You can check out his website for more info: www.drsones.com

Inflammation is in our bodies, whether we feel it or not,
Ask your doctor for a CRP test, C-Reactive Protein test, this test is high than a regular cholesterol test and show the inflammation and the flow of your blood in your vessels,

Have your heard of XANTHONES? these are phytonutrients found in plants, and is anti inflammatory, anti oxidant, you can read this on www.pubmed.gov, the highest , National Library of Medicines, enter xanthones on search or enter mangosteen.
you get the science of this.

My husband had pain from arthritis, on hips, shoulders, hands, his cholesterol was 245, it is down to 140, he was drinking 12 pills a day, he is down to 4.
amazing, we think so too.
This natural juice, we drink it twice a day, just 1 ounce.

email me and I can send you more info, tonight there is a doctor coming to Austin to present us with some great info,
no selling, no pressure, this is just information.

I suggest you look into it, this juice has helps ALL my family.

I have to agree with all of the "go to a chiropractor" responses. I'm afraid that i have to disagree to some extent with the response about yoga instructors knowing so much about hip issues. I am a yoga instructor and I do agree that yoga can probably help, I don't agree that yoga instructors have all this training about the body, they have limited training, and so many of them do not adjust or ask you if you have any issues that need addressing! I have had more people tell me that I am the only instructor that they have had that adjusted their postures to help them do them correctly and achieve the desired results. as an instructor I think that it is terrible that so many other instructors just don't care enough about their students to go the extra mile! I do, but so many don't, Hey I figure "that's my job!" and i take it seriously! So Yes DO try yoga, but be careful who you choose for an instructor, talk to her before class, be sure that she is aware of your problem, and if she doesn't offer you any extra help or modifications, or give you any one on one attention...move on to another instructor! there are good ones but you have to find them, just like you have to find a good chiropractor, or even hair dresser! "you know how much you hate it when your hair dresser won't listen to you when you are trying to tell them what you do and don't want done with your hair! they are already cutting! find a yoga instructor that listens before she asks you to do any thing!" Arrive a few minutes early to the class to talk to her, don't drop in at the last minute and talk to her when she is supposed to be already teaching. She may need a minute to evaluate what she is going to teach that day and how it may effect you, and come up with some modifications! if you go to her again, gently remind her you need modifications again as to your hip. I have people with different issues and sometimes i need to be reminded, especially if they are not regulars or if they are new to me! Good luck, hope you find a really good one!

Have you tried going to a physical therapist or chiropractor? If your in Austin, I like Dr. Joel Cone near West gate and 290. I have had hip problems since I was a teen and they have helped but the best thing I have found is pilates. I go 2x a week at Golds Gym and my hip finally feels stronger and I haven't had a day when I can't move in years. They have daycare for free. Being consistant with strengthening my core has really made a difference.

L.,

It sounds like you may have dislocated your hip. Which happens after having children. Mine does the same thing and it is so bad sometimes it is hard to walk. My ob refered me to a physical therapist and the aligned me and some other treatments along with other exercises. See if you could be refered to a physical therapist.

Hi L.,

My name is S. and I have a degree in P.E. focused in Adult Fitness. I do training for people to get back in shape, mostly older adults.
A couple questions, did it start before or after having your kids? Have you sustained a specific injury to your back or hip? How long have you had it and when does it bother you?

Carrying your kids on your waist/hips can be stressful for even the Mom on a regular exercise routine. Look at the way you sleep, position wise as well. Do some gentle stretches morning and evening, and even include your kids. A warm bath daily may help the soft tissue and muscles. An anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen is recommended for aches and pains. Use as directed on the bottle and take it with food due to the likelihood of stomach distress.

A small exercise plan may help to streghthen the area too. Getting the ok and advice from your doctor is key before starting any exercise plan especially when pain and inflammation are present.
Walking is a great exercise mode and you can do it with your kids. If you are pushing a stroller though, it can make the muscles in the hips and back work harder and your injury may not appreciate more weight and effort. Feel free to write me backa nd we can talk.

I had back and knee problems which, of course, is different from you're suffering, but I think these types of problems can be connected. I would see a good spine specialist. If you're in Austin, James L. Smith, Jr. would be a God send. He's awesome. After you see a doctor, ask if he will prescribe physical therapy for you. Linda Longoria is a gem in Austin who helped me learn what to do to strengthen my knees and back. Believe me, at 59, I thought I'd have to live the rest of my life in pain. Linda asked me why I had been living in pain for so many years, and I told her that I thought that's the way it had to be. I thought I was just getting old. She worked with me until she taught me everything I needed to keep up exercises at home. It's quite possible that you're suffering from something that can be fixed through physical therapy. Find a good spine specialist and a good physical therapist before deciding that this is the way you're going to be the rest of your life. Good luck to you!

Outside of hip, inside? Is it a dislocation or muscular? Whatever is going on with your hip, you need to do some personal physical therapy. Sometimes it's not actually the hip but a weakness in back and/or belly muscles that affects the hip flexors and causes pain. Yoga classes are great, and yoga teachers have hours and hours in physiology training that can get your hip back into working order. These days, there are even yoga studios that have childcare or concurrent yoga classes for your children.

Hi L.,
I have had hip trouble of and on since I was about 15 and I am 35 now. I starting going to Phyical Therapy back in September at a place called Sports Performance International. They are located off of Great Hills Tr in Austin. Their website is www.sportsperformanceint.com
It helped me so much. My hip pain came back when I stopped doing my exercises so I KNOW it was helping. I am now 5 months pregnant and it has helped me get through the pains of that as well. The only thing is you HAVE to do your exercise they give you at home but they take less than 15 minutes a day.
I have sent two friends there for problems with Scitica and low back pain and both are doing better now.
With Physical Therapy you have to get a "referral" so just call to get in with the Orthopedic M.D or P.A first for an evaluation and they will walk you right over to Physical Therapy. Try to request Troy or Pieter for your Physical Therpist.I also know someone in San Antonio if that is closer. It's a guy I used to go to at Sports Performance but now he has his practice there.
Good Luck!
Brandi

a physical therapist can help determine muscular imbalances throughout yoru body, which might be part of the problem (if you have three small kids, carry them more on one side than the other, that will certainly throw your hips off). so then, you can get a list of exercises (that won't take much time) to help balance you out. this is a good approach because you are involved in the understanding and the adjustments, rather than just recieving them from a chiropractor. your gp can probably refer you to someone. also, if it is more than muscular imbalance (arthritis or something) that can be determined too. good luck!

My right hip gives me trouble once in a while. When I was pregnant my son was laying in such a way as to give me sciatica and as an admin, for longer then I want to admit, I would have carpel if I hadn't found a good masseuse a long time ago. She taught me exercises to keep the nerve happy. Ask your Mom if she has had trouble with the same side hip you're having problems with. If so, You might have a genetic correlation. For over the counter, I found any kind of Glucosamine supplement as well as oily fish in the diet a few times a week will lube the joint and make it a bit happier.
You can also try Yoga poses that help the hip. This will give it strength and you some relief!
Good Luck!

There are a number of problems one could describe as "hip pain" (I know, having had several!), but there are a few basic things I know of to help. First, a chiropractor. For me, it can make a huge difference. Second, a skilled massage therapist. When it got so bad that even the chiropractor couldn't fix it, the massage therapist got me walking again. This will require deep tissue massage and leave you sore for a bit, but it is amazing how much it can help! Third, is physical therapy. I had PT in water for a while, and did much better with it. However, when I stopped, the pain returned, and I pursued these other options. A combination of chiropractic adjustments (to align your spine and leg), massage (to release your muscles and ligaments), and therapeutic exercise (to build strength and retrain your muscles) will hopefully help and get you back to feeling like yourself!

Have you considered seeing a chiropractor? I find that very often that getting an adjustment can help with issues I would never have guessed were related to my back. After the birth of my daughter I had a mysterious pain over my shoulder blade that made it almost impossible to hold my baby, I started getting relief after the first visit and a few visits later the pain was completely gone. Hope this is helpful.

I reccommend Chiropractic Care. I had a traumatic hip injury that continued to cause problems even after x-rays showed it healed. I finally visited a chiropracter at my fiance's urgings. My hip had been slightly out of socket for the whole time, undetectable by x-rays. That was in 2000. I regularly visit my chiropracter and have the issue addressed because it is recurring. It has gotten me through pregnancies and addresses the intense sciatic nerve pain when it flares up. I can reccommend a provider if you are in the Bastrop area.
