Hip Pain - Belgium,WI

Some time in August I noticed that when I sat "pretzle legs" or indian style as it was called when I was in school, I had pain in my left hip. My left hip has always had less turn-out than my right, but it never hurt. It does not hurt now at any time other than sitting pretzle legs or when I try to stretch by putting the soles of my feet together. But, it's getting worse. Just to give you a better idea of the area I'm talking about - if I'm standing, the very sharp pain would be located about half way between the top of my hip and my pelvic area, on the front of my body. It does not hurt while I am standing or walking. When I put my feet sole to sole, I can turn out my right leg flat on the floor. The left one always hovered slightly above the floor, but over the last few months, it's getting further and further from the floor. I don't even have to put any pressure on it for it to hurt. I tried stretching it for a few days, but it was not helping. Earlier in the summer I was able to lean forwad over my feet (when in the butterfly position) and lay my head on the floor, now I can hardly sit in this position straight up. Any ideas what might be causing the pain? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I've suffered from piraforma syndrome (spelling?) that causes hip pain for years. I waited too long to have it examined and was initially misdiagnosed. I would get a definitive diagnosis from an MD (maybe an ortho?) and then get a referal to a good PT. If it doesn't help, get a 2nd opinion. Don't let it go on for too long like I did! Good luck.

I am a PT; it sounds like your posterior hip capsule may be tight (the back, deep in your butt)--when this happens, it makes it harder to move through the full range of motion, and pushes the "ball" of the top of the thigh bone (the hip) forward onto the front rim of the pelvis, making certain positions uncomfortable/painful. See if you can get into a PT who can teach you the right stretches to do. They are hard to describe in writing, and there may be others based on what they find.

Sounds like you may have pulled a muscle. You may need to just go have an adjustment. Make an appointment with a Chiropractor or Osteopath.

It may be arthritis. My brother-in-law was diagnosed with this in his hip by his doctor. Even though he is young for arthritis, he was told it could be from his running workouts on the treadmill.

Please consider getting Xrayed or scanned rather than getting "adjusted".
You may have a problem with the joint, rather than with a pulled muscle.
Do you do any other stretches besides sitting on the floor?
Good luck.

Your left hip has more turn-out than your right one, so it seems that the joint may be more "worn" than the other. I would follow Cindy L. advice.

I have gone through various episodes of intense hip pain in my life depending on my stages in lfe (athlete, pregnant, etc.). See a physical therapist, they will loosen it up using ultrasound, massage and specific stretching. Then you will be given exercises to do at home to help prevent it from returning.

oddly i have the same pain...and another friend of mine does to...i think the heat of the summer took its tole on everybody...let me know what you find out.
