Hints on Getting Old Stickers off Glass Windows

Does anyone know how to get old stickers off windows (both house and car windows). We tried peeling it off & using dull blade to scrape it off, but the sticky part is still on the glass.

So What Happened?

Update: It's been a busy couple of weeks, but I finally got the stickers off. The nail polish remover worked really well esp. with the paper still on the glass. Did not have a chance to get vodka so didn't do that experiment. (Maybe when I have a chance I'll put a sticker on it just for the vodka advice). Goo Gone worked well too, but I had to get the paper part off first. The fume was more unpleasant than the nail polish remover. The windows are sticker-free and we love it. Thanks again for all your advice.

WOW! Thank you all for your responses! Looks like a lot of you have tried Goo Gone. Being a procrastinator that I am, I was busy getting our tax done by tonight's deadline (since my hubby is on deployment so I have to do it myself this year.) so I haven't tried any of the wonderful suggestions. I plan to pick up Goo Gone and do a little experiment myself (I'll try to get my boys involve). Use different solutions/suggestions on different stickers. Believe me, there are enough stickers to go around for each suggestion. I am most curious about using Vodka. Do they sell trial size vodka bottles? I don't drink so buying a regular size bottle would be too much. Do they go bad?

Anyways, I will let you guys know the result. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

You can keep vodka in the freezer. Yes, they do sell it in mini shot-size containers at Circle K or liquer stores. I think the rubbing alcohol will work the best and is probably the least expensive method.

Rubbing alcohol.
By the way, rubbing alcohol or hair spray gets house paint off of surfaces as well, and can be used to remove paint from clothes too. We've also used rubbing alcohol to remove markers and other "scribbling" my kids have drawn on our walls! Works great.

a non-chemical way to try is a wet wash cloth, a razor blade and a hair dryer. The hair dryer can heat up the sticker making it come off easier. Use the wet wash cloth to wipe off the small parts and thee razor blade to scrape.

You may not need this anymore, but someone may find it useful... mayonnaise, spread liberally over the area and let it sit for a little while, then wipe off. Peanut butter works too, and it will work on bumper stickers to get them off the car... oh, and you can use both of these on stickers stuck to wood (like stuck to a dresser) and it won't hurt the wood. I see you got a ton of responses already. I just had to put in my two cents worth having been there myself.
My husband is a true handyman when it comes to things like this, and we both swear by ACETONE, which is found in paint thinner, and NAIL POLISH REMOVER. Just be careful because it does remove paint too, so if there is a spill you may remove more stuff than you wish! As a kid my sister and I once spilled nail polish remover on our bedroom floor. We had those cheap tiles like you see in old grocery stores, and it ate a big white spot into the design on our floor. Good stuff though, it really eats away that glue from stickers!
Have fun with that!

try scrubbing it with a scratch pad like you would use for your dishes and rubbing alcohol. It might take a little elbow grease, but the alcohol should loosen the adhesive.

Hi

Just wanted to offer a suggestion. I have always used finger-nail polish remover and a few cotton balls. I put the remover on the cotton and then hold it against the sticky glue on the window. The remover softens the glue and then you can use a blade to scrape the window lightly. The glue will soften and push into a ball and then be easy to remove. It is good when you get the glue off to clean the mirror/window with window cleaner to remove the oily polish remover. I have used it for years and have always had good results. Good luck.

You can try "Goo Gone" or acetone. The Goo Gone is a bit oily but it usually does the trick for me.

SH,

Try using a product called "Goo Off". It's wonderful for taking out a lot of things like stickers, gum, etc.

rubbing alcohol. I use to work in retail and it worked everytime on the large store front windows. Just use a cotton ball to soak the residue, then rub off with a sponge.

I use either W-D 40 or Goo Gone works.
My daughter had someone put a sticker on the bummer of her car a couple of weeks ago and we used W-D 40. It came right off. No damage to the painted bummer of her Toyota.
Good Luck.

"Goof Off" works great! Found at most stores like Wal-Mart, etc. Once you use the Goof Off, then you need window cleaner to clean the window afterward.
