My lovely niece and wonderful nephew will both be graduating from high school. They are both awesome kids and I want to give them each a nice gift. Would $100 be a good amount to give or would an actual "gift" and say $50 be better? Now, in terms of an actual gift, what would you suggest? She will be going off to college and he's going into the military.

What can I do next?

I always like to give some kind of luggage: duffel bag, carry-on, computer bag, toiletry case. They will be moving around a lot for the next ten years.

I give both money and a separate gift that is specifically for the child to nephews and nieces. High school grads get the works - college grads get a token gift, and masters get a card. (I just can't keep giving big gifts to each kid for everything - too many of them! High school is the big cahoona for me in terms of gifts.)

How ever you want to do it is fine for you. Just make sure you are as generous with each one so that there is no favoritism shown.

Money or gift cards for good clothes (for collage/interviews)

For the niece going off to college, a full piggy-bank of quarters and a gift basket filled with laundry products is creative and useful. A collage of pictures would work for either also.

Money..

I gave my nephew $500 last year. He is special to us though and was heading off to college.

Now if I had a huge family, I would not be giving $500 per graduate...

Hi,
I just sent 2 daughters off to college last fall after graduation, and I can say that the best and most appreciated gift they recieved was MONEY!! It may seem a bit dull, but when it comes to buying things needed for their dorms or off campus housing, it's much easier to do that all at once, and with the money you can do that easier. If someone buys you a few items here and there, then you spend an enormous amount of time sorting through things to see what you have, need, and want and end up with many of the same item and none of others. Also, these days, most high school grads who are off to college want to buy their dorm stuff to match. The colleges even have packages that you can buy that include almost everything needed for bedding, bathroom, and storage. I always say for high school grad., go with cash! Congrats to your graduates! :)

For the kids going off to college, I give a "bathroom bucket" complete with towel and washcloth. I put in a toothbrush holder, travel sized toothpaste, q-tips, flashlight, and anything else that looks good and is on sale. I don't usually put in deodorant or shampoo because people are picky about that sort of stuff.

For those not going to college, I put in a Walmart gift card -- the stores are nationwide and you can always find something you need there. :-)

YMMV
