High HCG Levels but Not Fetal Pole Seen Yet

I had a ultrasound at 6 weeks and 3 days according to the doctor but I could only be 5 weeks at the most. Anyhow we saw the sac & the yolk sac but no fetal pole yet. The next day my levels were at 19000 and my doctor is concerned since we didn't see a fetal pole with such high levels. Anyone else experience this? I think its just to early to see it yet. Doc thinks it may be Blighted ovum, but how if there is a yolk sac?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I went back for another ultasound & sure enough there was a baby & a heartbeat of 113. I will be 7 weeks on Thursday & am so happy & feel so blessed. I pray this pregnancy goes well & know my little angels in heaven are watching over mommy.

Wait a week for the ultrasound. I just went through the same thing a couple weeks ago. I was 7 1/2 weeks according to my LMP, but I have long cycles. In my first ultrasound they only found a sac and a yolk sac, no fetal pole and said that I was measuring only 5 weeks (I thought I was about 6 1/2). My doctor said wait a week and a half for another ultrasound, but said that there was a 50-50 chance that it was not a viable pregnancy. (It would not be a blighted ovum b/c there was a yolk sac, but could be a non viable pregnancy) They took my blood again and my levels were rising appropriately, which they said was a good sign. I waited a week and a half (seemed like the longest of my life) and the next ultrasound found a fetus and the heartbeat. The tech said I was measuring 7 1/2 weeks (only 2 days off from where I thought I was). So it could just be that they couldn't find it yet. Good luck!

Hi-my sister went through the same thing with her first pregnancy-they saw everything needed for a baby but no baby dot-they told her that she would prolly miscarry and if she didn't they would have to do a D&C to clear out everything that was there cuz he said there was prolly no baby-that what she had was called Blighted Ovum-my sister was devastated-she didn't know what to do-she was just going to go thru with the D&C and I kept telling her to wait-just wait-wait until the dr says for sure there is NO baby-her hopes had diminished-we are all glad she waited-she gave birth 9 months later to my beautiful nephew who is 4 now and the light of everyones life-he is healthy-has some sensory issues but doing better with them-he is small for his age-he is 4 and weighs 30 lbs-his 10 month old brother has almost caught up to him in wt-so please don't do anything drastic until they are FOR SURE there is no baby-and if you have to get a second opinion please do-i will be praying for you-please let me know how everything turns out-and I am sorry for your previous loss-i can't even imagine what you went through

They saw a yolk sac for my 1st ultrasound with my daughter (now 2 yrs old) but no fetal pole. Made me come back a week later and there it was! I never had any blood hcg levels taken so I can't help you there. Hope it works out for you! By the way -- right after I got pregnant with my daughter (unknown to me) I had an ultrasound for irregular bleedings in prior months. The doc saw a spec inside my uterus and thought I had a polyp and scheduled me for a polypectomy -- turned out to be MY DAUGHTER! I found out I was pregnant and cancelled the procedure. God bless the outpatient system for not being able to fit me in for the procedure for over a month!

Hi, C.

You're right. A blighted ovum would not contain a yolk sac. Definitely just wait a few days, I'm sure you'll see a fetal pole soon, assuming that the existing gestational sac and yolk sac are normal thus far :) Good luck to you.

Please wait a week or so and go back for another ultra sound. I have been having bleeding during my pregnancy and i went for an US at 5 weeks 5 days and they did see everything but it took a long time and the US tech said it was very difficult to get the picture and only the fact that she has been doing it for a very long time is the only reason she could find it.

I went back a week later for another one and again she had problems finding it, but eventually did. She mentioned that while some techs are pretty good it can take a lot of experience sometimes to get all the pictures. I am so glad i had her as a tech and i am making sure to ask for her everytime i go.
