High Fever for the past 6 days..please I Need Advice :(

Take him BACK to the ER.
This is not right....

Even if it just a virus... he can get dehydrated or worse or get worsening symptoms or it can escalate... or he can get secondary infections too.

BUT what if it is NOT a virus??? And something else???

He cannot go on like this... and his belly being that way is not right.... and he is in PAIN.
AND he has high fever for days....

Take him back to an ER.... children's hospital like the others said.

Take him ASAP.

Have they ruled out the ears? Have they ruled out an impaction with a perforation or perhaps an appendicitis? You mention the hard swollen abdomen.. is it still that way? Did they do a spinal tap to rule out any meningitis?

Have you been keeping him cool with tepid baths? Is he still vomiting and have diarrhea now?

Too many questions for my liking, I would take him back and get a NEW opinion.. or take him to another emergency room.. your post says you are in Hialeah.. maybe try Jackson Memorial Hospital...or Variety Children's Hospital

Put that baby in the car take him to your nearest CHILDREN'S hospital and refuse to leave till they find a cause. Fevers that high for that length of time are not good.

Take him to the ER. If you have to, take him to a DIFFERENT ER until you find someone who shares your concern.

Yes. Take him to the ER. Please, don't wait!! Better yet, a Children's Hospital...like someone else suggested.

My son and daughter have both had viruses this month that caused them to have fevers (for several days) that were up to 105.5. I freaked out when I took their temperatures, and call the doctor right away. They assured me that it is not uncommon for kids to have really high fevers. They said as long as they were acting ok (obviously they were miserable, but there were no other breathing issues etc that worried me) not to worry about taking them to the ER. If you have already seen a doctor and they think it is a virus, I'd trust them and take him back to his pediatrician in the morning.

You can demand to be seen and kept in the hospital, but it will be very expensive and if it is a virus there is NOTHING they can do.

It sucks, for my kids it lasted about 7 days... scary and miserable, but they made a complete recovery in a day or so after he fever broke. Keep talking to the doctor - they went to medical school and deal with kids and illnesses all the time.

PS - If he is getting dehydrated (even a little) take him in ASAP. That could be the most serious issue.

A virus can last a while.Did they do any scans on his belly?I feel so sorry for you it is diffucult to see & treat yourchild at the same time.Have they done any blood work to make sure it's not bacterial infections??

Up until a week ago I would have said take him back to the ER or find a different doctor...BUT..this happened to us too. My daughter had a fever of up to 105 for 5 days in a row. I took her to the doctor twice, they checked her urine, step test, same as you. There is a virus going around that is just awful. Her pediatrician (and I trust him very much!) said that she could have that fever for up to 7 days. It's horrible, I know. Try and push the fluids as much as possible. All my daughter wanted was water and every time I gave it to her she threw it up. Once I finally started forcing Gatorade (b/c she downright refused pedialyte, and it really is gross, so I went to plan B) she was able to keep that down and that helped on the road to recovery. I've never heard of ibuprofen making someone throw up more?? THat is bad news, b/c you have to get the fever down and one sure-fire way is to switch between ibuprofen and tylenol every three hours. Otherwise you may have to try cool clothes or luke warm baths which are no fun and not usually well received. My daughter was on the couch watching TV for 6 full days. It is horrible and scary b/c as an adult you just can't imagine it's still going on, but honestly I would give it another day or two. If he's still not better after a full week and maybe then some, then certainly go back to the doctor or ER, until then just try and keep him hydrated. OH...also, I know this is not that great either, but if he can't keep meds down you'll have to do a Tylenlol suppository. It's not nearly as scary as it sounds but you'll have to do it to get the fever down!

Oh I also wanted to add that you can check for dehydration yourself...sort of...make sure he's still having wet diapers, at least one or two a day and feel the inside of his mouth. If it's still moist he's okay, if it's tacky, that's a bad sign and you need to take him to the ER.

I know there is a really bad virus going around Broward. The stomach pain is bad with it. Everyone I know has it. The kids that get it usually are sick for 2-4 days but the stomach pains continue for a few weeks. They will not eat that well. Keep him on the BRAT diet and although I am not a fan of Tylenol because it deletes the body's natural glutathione in the liver, so it strips the immune system, you might try the suppositories because it gets into the bloodstream quicker if the runs don't push it out. I wouldn't do it under 103-104 though. Sometimes it's best to let the fever burn off the infection. That's why our bodies have that mechanism. It heats up the body so the germs die. Try to let him just rest and drink lightly or popsicles. He will lose weight but it will come right back on in the next couple of weeks. You will see him bounce back very quickly maybe by tomorrow! Also he is a kid you should keep on probiotics all the time.

Make sure they take stool samples. They need to do a complete blood count test, I would ask them to include a panel on vitamin/mineral/electrolyte levels. It would be good for them to do a hormone check but you probably wont be able to get them to do that.
They could put him on a broad spectrum antibiotic, If it were me I'd ask them to do that. If it is indeed a bacterial infection you will typically see the person starting to get better within a day, maybe two, of an antibiotic.

The most worrysome thing you mention is his lethargy (wants to constantly sleep). That is not a good sign.

My DD had a horrid UTI that they misdiagnosed, and it moved into her kidneys at 2 yrs old, and had the same symptoms you describe. They kept telling me it was a virus..."there was this bad virus going around". After 4 pedi visits and about the 7th day, her lips started to get a subtle blue hue, her eyes slightly sunk in and had dark circles under them, and she started to hallucinate (was seeing monsters in her room). She wanted to sleep constantly, except for the 2 hours right after the tylenol was administered where she would get up and play.But as soon as it wore off she was back to her very sick self. The sleeping and blue lips, sunken eyes, all of that... are signs of going into shock. They finally tested her urine and It took 2 days before the antibiotics even kicked in, her infection was so bad. What They SHOULD have done was admited her and put her on an Ringers Lactate IV and an antibiotic IV. But they didnt , they only gave her 7 days of ABX pills.

Shock is so dangerous because it causes internal bleeding which damages tissues. in fact, ANY CHRONIC BACTERIAL INFECTION that is allowed to continue unabated will cause bleeding and damage to internal tissues. Some of the most susceptable areas to damage are the adrenal glands and then the thyroid, because these glands have a higher blood saturation than any other organ. The adrenal glands also share the tubules with the kidneys. So any infection the body is trying to detox and eliminate will be going through them.

Fast forward to now, my DD is 13 and has Addisons disease. That is where you adrenal gland doesnt put out enough hormones anymore because it has atrophied from tissue damage. A direct result of medical malpractice, for which my DD will never be the same again for the rest of her life. She has been close to death on a number of occasions. (the hormones from the gland control practically everything your body does, from your heart beat, to your blood pressure, your mood, stomache acid levels, glucose control, sleep patterns, breathing, colon muscles, metabolism, allergy and sickness progression, ...there is just too much to mention.)

So, I, like others, will implore you to get her back to an ER and you are going to have to come armed with some knowledge. It is much harder for them to sluff you off if you have some info under your belt. There is a website called Wrongdiagnosis.com.. this website helped me find out what was wrong with my DD. It took me 8 years of reasearch to FINALLY find out what she had, and that her sickness today was linked to her illness back then. I would have never suspected adrenal disease , but I found the answer, and I tell you the docs are still trying to tell me she is "normal". I know more about the human body than they do!

"Someone on here mentioned dehydration. This is also extremely important to be on top of. Directly because dehydration affects ELECTROLYTE LEVELS. Specifically, sodium, potassium, Phosphorus and a few others.
Sodium and potassium are held in check very tightly by the body, even a small imbalance is a major big deal, and will cause severe illness...again, will cause the body to go into shock. When my DD has an Addison crisis, the first thing I do is try to get electrolytes in her (gatorade)..because her adrenal gland isnt putting out the hormone that controls those electroylte levels. If she continues in a low sodium state, she will go into a coma.

So again go on to wrongdiagnosis.com. type in vomiting. Type in swollen abdomen. You may have to cross refrence many symptoms. I will pray for your wisdom, that the lord can deliver you through this.

Hi B. I would Definetly go back to the er (maybe another hospital) and as you said demand to have an answer. Did they check for pneumonia? There is this virus going around that gives 5 days of high fever and usually end up in either strep throat, ear infection or pneumonia.

Did you take him to a children's hospital or a general hospital? If it was a general I would get him to a children's -even if it means a drive for you. They are SO much better with kids-and with their parents.

Viruses can do some strange things though. My sons have had 'fever'viruses before that seemed to last forever. I can't remember if the fevers stayed as high as your sons though b/c it was a long time ago.

Take him back to ER or else to another Doctor!! I have always been told to bring my son in if there is a fever that does not go down. Your son has been sick long enough and you need to get to the bottom of it!!

I would take him back to the er and tell them you want a second opinion I am not buying it. he is lethargic which is a sign of dehydration. a virus passed in 7-10 days and that fever is to high in my opinion. I used to live in a small town and if I didnt like the answer i got I would drive to a nearby town for my second opnion. it was worth the drive.

see, if it were my child, i would refuse to get discharged from hospital.
But just two weeks ago, a mom told me about her son's 7 day viral infection (that caused him 105 fever that would not go down). it scared me to death and for sure said doctors are wrong. something is wrong.i couldn't understand why she wasn't going to hospital. turns out she did twice, then ped's office 3 times. and as she was told the viral infection went away. scary though.
but again, i would go back. especially with a young child.
